It takes more than just ability to be a Celtic player

294

Erik Sviatchenko made an instant impact on Celtic’s defensive performances when he arrived in January 2016, six months after the departure of Virgil van Dijk and Jason Denayer.  He was our top central defender for the remainder of Ronny Deila’s tenure and for the first six months of Brendan Rodgers’ time.

Then came a game at Ibrox on Hogmanay 2016.  Celtic were rattled for much of the opening period and Erik looked most out of sorts.  His assured touch was replaced by a need to get rid of the ball early.  Fortunately things turned out well that day but I wondered if the manager’s faith in the defender was shaken.  Some of us doubted his temperament.

The season just ended started badly for Erik as he picked up an injury early in the Champions League qualification rounds.  A loan for former club, Midtjylland, confirmed where he was in Brendan’s plans.

Midtjylland returned most of the money we paid for him and the player is in an environment, and at a level, which suits him.  It takes a lot to be a Celtic player, more than just ability or experience elsewhere.

CLYDEBANK aso had St Eunans primary school before St Columba senior school was built. Eunan was a disciple of Columba.

Delaney’s , Clydebank for being such a Celtic stronghold, particularly Duntocher, has not given us more players. Jamie Smith was the last I think. His uncle Billy used to be a few of our players’ barber.

The number of colleagues I worked with in Clydebank who were from the area who called Saint Eunan’s , Saint Eunian’s , amused me no end.

Sorry … one of those days where work gets in the way …. hate it when that happens….

    so, will be brief

    Two things:

    1. for administrative decisions, you leave yourself open to challenge not just in cases of actual bias, but if there is a reasonable apprehension of bias (which is much broader). Why even risk it? It is not like he seems to have a wealth of experience in football …

    2. The sense i am getting is ‘hey … they did it to us, so why cant we do it to them/tehy had their people, why cant we have ours?’ … understandable, but, if the purpose is really to clean up the game, not the way forward ….

Playing to the crowd and the worst of them at that. For me he’s the Trump of Scottish football as he goes after quick ‘fixes’ and gallery pleasers whilst trying to discredit the prosecutors.

All we need is an orange strip, a big new wall to guard and draining the Broomloan ‘swamp’…Oh wait a minute!

  8. & while The Glib and Shameless wants transparency

Can we have all Masons, and known Rangers supporters disclose their allegiances

Be that FtSFA, or SPFL, including referees etc

Oh Dave, is Mr Dickson still in position at FtSFA, the same one from your defunct club board, who applied for licences for European games ??

  9. I wasn’t sure when Scott Brown signed for us and only really enjoyed it as the deid club wanted him but look how that eventually turned out. A true Celtic captain.

Quick question guys- a number of other commitments will prevent me from attending most games next year however 16 year old son and 11 year old son are desperate to attend on a regular basis.

Can the 16 year old accompany they 11 year old to the games or do they need to have an over 18 with them?

Jamie’s uncle Billy was my barber when I needed one. He would also supply us with something for the weekend. A deal of blaw. Billy was an extremely colourful Tim Bankie. His clothes were colourful themselves. Think he retired in Thailand. Lovely bloke who taught me loads about Celtic and life in general. One of Bankie’s best character’s in a cast of thousands of Bankie characters.

  14. Hi Bhoys

I think our club should just ignore all the pish that is being spewed from anyone with anything to do with the huns. Unless it’s libellous of course. The deluded people who run and surround that thing are just trying desperately to make any issues in scottish football an us against them thing.

Let them flounder around in the cesspit of their own making and we can just keep on a course of onward and upward. We have never been in such a position of strength before and we have to keep our focus and stay there.

They will try anything to stop the ten and this just seems to me to be another muddying of the waters to cover up their criminality and deceit. Possibly in the demented hope that someone will restructure our game and give them a shot at the title before ten is complete.

This of course is just IMHO.

    KEEP THE FAITH

  15. Balornock Bhoy,

I assume all 3 of you have the appropriate season ticket. If so then there’s no reason why either boy wouldn’t get in. I assume all safety considerations have been satisfied in your role as a father ;-)

There are a few neighbours of mine in Dalmuir West, Clydebank who still speak with a Donegal accent after 50 or more years living in Dalmuir. Most hail hail from Ramelton and have the name Gallagher,Gallacher or McLaughlin. My sis married a Ramelton McLaughlin. Little Donegal by Dalmuir tram terminus fae Broomielaw is Green and White.

  17. THE Club notes with concern the latest disclosure through the media regarding activities of the Chairman of the SPFL, clearly indicating his allegiance to a fellow SPFL club.

An independent source has provided evidence of the Chairman of the SPFL wantonly disregarding blue jelly beans, wilfully and ravenously consuming green jelly beans in preference.

This source confirmed that during an official meeting of the board, the Chairman reached out to the bowl of jelly beans at the centre of the table, a bowl containing at that time, 3 green jelly beans and 2 blue jelly beans. After withdrawing his hand, only the 2 blue jelly beans remained as he consumed his chosen delicacies.

This has given rise to allegations of non-disclosure and it is now imperative that we discover exactly the nature of the information supplied to the SPFL regarding this relationship.

It is equally important that any conflicts of interest, or even the perception of such, whereby positions within the Scottish football authorities could be undermined, or abused, must be aggressively rooted out of our game.

The SPFL, therefore, must immediately suspend its Chairman pending an independent investigation by a senior QC into the allegations and into the extent that other parties within the SPFL may have cooperated in this alleged non-disclosure. There is a clear prima facie case for this investigation.

Unfortunately for Scottish football, this incident immediately follows a similar call by myself for an independent non-executive director of the SFA to be suspended under similar circumstances. The credibility of Scottish Football in the minds of supporters and sponsors is at stake and urgent action is required. Transparency will be key to recovering the confidence of key stakeholders in Scottish football and this cannot be achieved if the SFA and/or the SPFL conduct internal investigations.

The SPFL and SFA must now appoint independent investigators. Scottish football is an important national asset and must have levels of probity and governance that are beyond reproach and that are transparently so.
