It’s about cash, not a seat in the gazebo

323

Here’s the question: Potential investors offer to underwrite £6.5m worth of shares, around 30% of the club’s equity, at circa 16p per share, and require 2 seats on the board, what do you do?

Money is welcome, but the existing shareholders may consider this particular offer poor value.  The first £3m will go to repay Mike Ashley’s loan, acquired on easy terms and due payable in April, leaving you with a net inflow of £3.5m.  But you’ve flogged 30% of the club to get it.

There’s also the small matter that a net improvement of £3.5m is not enough to save the farm, in fact, it will only keep the doors open for another five weeks.  Five weeks, for 30% of the company.  Is this in the best interests of the shareholders?

If you’re advocating the position of the fans, you’d take the money.  You don’t care how much of the club is given away, or that you’re only kicking the ball down the street 5 weeks.  In fact, you want ever-more of the club to be traded in this exchange, as you don’t trust the current controlling shareholders.  The shareholders will see things differently.

Throughout this episode an arrogant attitude has existed towards those who put their hands in their pockets in 2012, or since, and funded Rangers International FC PLC.  I’m not saying I’d be any different if it was my club, just observing that any attempt to present a solution to the club’s gargantuan problems without recognising – and suitably compensating – the controlling shareholders, will fail.

Ashley can allow his £3m loan to rollover in support of an alternative offer, perhaps from an anonymous offshore entity, respecting the value the shareholders paid when their club needed help most.

I know it’s counter-culture for these types, but why not just offer to buy-out the shareholders at a high-enough rate that they’ll accept?   Like Fergus did back in ’94.  None of these guys are there for the seat in the gazebo, it’s about cash – if you want the club, don’t try to shame them into handing it over, pay them!

If we play to our potential on 1st Feb and our finishing improves, the score could be an outrageous one, c’mon Ronny, you know how much fun this could be.

You are way more aggressive than you used to be… this place can get to you after a while. I hope that’s just some festive weariness :)

I read your posts, and respect your view. No blinkers on my part, and no mention of Johnansen in my post. But there is no comparison in how they lose possession. Commons in the dribble, very often by the second touch, and often with his back to the play. Johansen, rarely loses possession in the dribble or in a dangerous position, but instead his passing is sometimes (although this is sporadic) not good enough. Both can be problematic, but one is much more so.

So, yeah, I would rather Johansen played, which must be obvious, but in the role you suggest Commons would rank as my 4th choice behind Johansen, Stokes or Forrest, all much better at retaining possession.

Football tends to get complicated by guys like Commons. We’re easily fooled in Britain by this kind of player, but coaches and managers, these days at least, rarely are. When you’re a kid you play for yourself, you make as many chances for yourself as you can, but then you start getting to levels of football where you can only achieve by learning to collaborate.

Ask yourself why Larsson didn’t turn and run towards goal every time he got the ball, or Lubo, or even Messi. All, we agree, better than Commons. All understand that they’re more likely to get that shooting chance if the team have the ball, all have learned, long before 31, that they’re not good enough (aye even Messi) to do it every time, so lay it off find some more space and the chance just comes later. Patience.

It’s disheartening how often this has to be explained to fans of British football, as if what Barca or Bayern do it enact a miracle when they play. It’s all about degree’s of intelligent ball retention.

Commons is a professional footballer who might be the least willing to retain possession of any player I’ve ever seen playing. I’m being serious. But I’m only saying it because so many of us are in love with his goals they miss that we simply can’t win at the top level with him in the team.

  9. Forgot about the Sevco game ha ha!

I was telling a mate yesterday to bet big in Hibs as they’re going to beat them easily, how crap are they!

I reckon they’ll go into admin before they play us, we’d take 10 off them.
