IT’S ALL OVER FOR GAMBOA

CRISTIAN GAMBOA has joined Celtic team-mate Tom Rogic through the World Cup Finals exit.

The right-back was a stand-out performer in the 2-2 draw with Switzerland, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Costa Rica from finishing bottom of Group E.

The Swiss went into the game needing a draw to qualify for the knock-out rounds alongside Brazil who beat Serbia 2-0 to complete the group with seven points.

Blerim Dzemaili put Gamboa and Co under pressure in the 31st minute before Costa Rica scored their first goal of the 2018 World Cup as Kendall Waston’s header put them level.

Josip Drmic swept the Swiss back into the lead with two minutes to play, but there was a freak leveller in stoppage time when Bryan Ruiz’s penalty-kick effort ended in the net off the back of goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who takes the unwanted credit of an own goal.

Gamboa joined the attack at one stage to fire in a fine effort, but it was dealt with by the confident Swiss keeper.

Hoops colleague Rogic and his Aussie team exited the competition when they finished bottom of Group C with one point.

However, Dedryck Boyata, who will play for Belgium against England tonight, and Mikael Lustig, whose Swedish side face the Swiss on Tuesday, are still flying the flag for the Hoops in Russia.
