It’s over, Mr Johnston, you let your club die

449

Former chairman of Oldco Rangers, now director of Newco, Alastair Johnston, took aim in the media at Celtic supporters yesterday, saying “I always wondered about the mentality of certain Celtic supporters, not by any means most of them, who basically said our club died in February, 2012.”

Why do they do this to themselves?  If it is an attempt to convince people that liquidation did not happen, it will fail.  All that will be achieved is the re-telling of the facts.  Rangers entered administration on 14 February 2012.  It failed to come out of administration and a liquidator was appointed to dispose of the remaining assets.

Secvo Scotland Ltd bought a “bundle of assets”, including the stadium.  The administrators, Duff and Phelps, changed Rangers name to RFC 2012 Ltd and gave permission to Sevco Scotland to use the word “Rangers” in their name.  Without this permission, Newco would have gone through a similar naming process as Clydebank – Airdrie United – Airdrieonians, who were only permitted to use the word “Airdrieonians” 11 years after the liquidation of oldco Airdrieonians.

If I’m honest, if we were in those circumstances, I would tell myself every day that the Celtic I grew up with was the same as Newco Celtic.  I would have no incentive to do otherwise, so Johnston and anyone else who cares, can think what they want about Newco.

He is welcome to his thoughts, if it helps him through the trauma of what he did as chairman of Oldco during the EBT years, and the club’s failure to prepare over many years for HMRC’s legal challenge. Johnston’s board made no provision to retain enough money to trade through HMRC’s challenge, despite that legal challenge being underway years before it got to the crunch.

What he tells himself does not change the facts.  Oldco is in liquidation.  All player contracts ceased.  Assets were sold off, a deal to use the name had to be agreed.  Sevco Scotland became an associate member of the SFA while Oldco was still a member.  Oldco voted on whether to admit Sevco Scotland to the SPL.  Sevco changes its name and were granted entry to the SFL Third Division.

Johnston played a role in the demise of Rangers.  He was chairman and had a responsibility to direct the club away from dangers.  He failed and now presents an alternative reality, which is easier on the mind.

He also said, “it will be 120 years or so before you can tie with us.”  For each of those 120 years, Celtic fans and others will say, “But Rangers died in 2012”.  Just as Rangers fans are content to believe their club continues, belligerent denial is not going to change how others regard liquidation.  It’s over, Mr Johnston, you let your club die.

There was other guff about “thriving” not “surviving”.  They think they are going to win the league and that their circa £11m annual deficit is an indication of thriving.  Again, I disagree.

    Jg,

I’m firmly of the belief you reap what you sew.

P67 and everyone who kept Res12 in the fringes are now harvesting the fruits of their work.

The corruption and violence are stronger than ever and as predicted will only increase but the board and lock tuggers knew/know better.

They should be enjoying their spoils it’s exactly what they always wanted.

Laughable that the leader today is about the denial of the death of Rangers by Johnston.

Does Lawwell et al think that they died?

Remember Mr Desmond bemoaning the demise of oldco, “Scottish football needs a strong Rangers”

These guys are as blinded as Mr Johnston – at least he has an excuse…..

As you say , this has been coming since 2012 .

The failure by the Celtic board to stand up to this from day one alongside the acceptance of the continuity myth by the OF loving branch of the Celtic support has brought us to this position .

As long as Celtic were picking up trophies they were prepared to accept the cheating and corruption by the original Ibrox club and now the financial doping of the new club , this was always going to come back and bite us on the backside at some point.

The rest of Scottish football are also to blame for this debacle from the SFA / SPFL down to every club boardroom and support not doing enough to call it out.

I have no doubt that PL, DD and ‘Celtic, the business’ longed for a return of the old firm. Indeed one director told me precisely that not long after their demise.

But they foolishly thought they could master and tame the reincarnated undead. Instead they look like bambi sharing a paddling pool….. with a crocodile.

Scottish football is a total joke, you just need to look at our national team.

What I saw at Hampden and at Celtic Park on Sunday was nothing short of football’s version of WWF.

The Ranjurs are back, The Ranjurs are back…….

    Totally disgusted.

  9. I don’t blame AJ for coming out with this tosh. He is merely speaking up for the club(s) he supports.

However, for the same media who carried ‘RFC died 2012’ headlines, without so much as a follow up or probing question, shows where the real corruption lies.

Cheats will only cheat where they are enabled.

    Illogical nonsense.

Goes to the heart of the matter. Our PLC was complicit in the re-creation of the monster that is now throwing everything at consuming them. Because there was money in it.

As others have said, give them an inch, they’ll take a thousand miles. Lawwell’s the smartest man in the room, or so he tells himself. Let’s see if he’s smart enough to pull us through this one.

I think it’ll go one of two ways. We miss a bullet, scrape home and they’ve shot their bolt once and for all.

Or, we collapse under the pressure, Lenny carries the can, Lawwell waddles off into the sunset with an eye watering golden handshake and our fans are again left asking – was our club complicit in the rebirth of a successful Rangers because of personal greed?

  14. Seems we have all bought in to the belief that ‘Rangers’ are now a winning-machine that can’t be stopped.

I can speak only for myself. My whole point is that they are ‘stoppable’, but not if we continue as we’re doing on and off the park.

We’ve moved swiftly from a point where it was less than 4-0, we felt let down and their fans were relieved…..to a point where we’ve been owned in the last two matches. And where their domestic form is increasingly reliable. The pendulum shift is plain to see.

  19. Adi. Thank God someone speaks a bit of sense. For months even years, it was all bravado here. The Huns are shite etc and if you disagreed you left yourself open to ridicule.

Now one terrible result and plenty on here have lost their nerve.

I would ask everyone to check back our results, we had a great December, we have been having a great season. Our form started to dip a couple of weeks back but we continued to dig out results.

Our luck ran out against the Hun at Celtic Park, We played badly 2 or 3 of our players were so bad we might as well have been playing without them.

Forster did not have one really decent save to make, we missed a penalty & had 2 cleared off the line and we deservedly lost by a goal.

We will regroup we will go on a winning run in the League, we will beat Thistle in the Cup, I believe we have a great chance to beat Copenhagen.

Now what I don’t know is how the Huns will go. They may well do the same. if they do and end up ipping us for the Title well OK we will just have to deal with the disappointment.

My focus is on Celtic & Celtic alone, I believe we have a feast of successful football to look forward to this season. We do need to strengthen this window, & I am confident we will.

We are effectively one point behind with 18 games to play including 2 Hun games.

In the name of God why are people bricking it,

Everything is still there for us, Believe,

  20. Mc Nut,

No favourites till this window closes.I wait in hope. Why did we not go for a loan from Leicester for our ex CH for the rest of the season.Left sided.Have we even approached Spurs for Victor.Even on loan, with the option to buy.Sporar described today by Slovakian press as best striker in Eastern Europe today.9 means more to us than making another profit.I don’t care what it takes, loans or buys.Get it done this season.Next season will take care of itself. No use without winning this one.

  21. the long wait is over on

Having said that if we lose this league – a distinct possibility – we will do so by virtue of mismanagement at team and board level and knowing that they are deluding themselves as to their true history and status will be of little comfort.

  22. Corkcelt,

What is annoying me,and many others,is the lack of urgency. As I said earlier,we fly out to Dubai next week.I would love to see new signings on board. This waiting until the last week is ridiculous.Dont tell me we have not been already active sussing out players. We have to hit the ground running after the Jags match.Leicester and Spurs should have been contacted, and if agreeable,as seems likely, both players could have been here by now.

Lenny also has to get to grips. We have witnessed some strange decisions,Morgan, for one,Boli, for another.Playing players out of position,up to the scum game, then reverting back. Its not been going well for a few weeks, results more workmanlike than convincing. If Broony does not get that goal v Hamilton,we are in a right state. We need to up our game throughout the whole club.Starting with getting players in and bedded.

  23. Ive never understood the “same club” rhetoric as if its a matter of opinion rather than a matter of fact.

To stretch the logic, I have just bought the name Third Lanark International”. , Ive bought some red tops and me and my new team have a kick about at the Cathkin Park every Saturday.

I am now the proud owner of a Scottish cup winning team winning team.

  24. Can anyone suggest a valid and honourable reason for the Celtic Board having said nothing about the same club narrative?

  25. The huns scraped games as well. Let’s have some perspective.

I am confident they will drop points as well as us in the run in.

    But….we have been there before.

    HH

  26. Before they beat us at Celtic Park, the Huns had a very lucky 1-0 win against Killie and a 2-2 draw with Aberdeen. They’ll have got a morale boost from beating us but they still struggle against packed defences. Hibs and Hearts will improve so I reckon there are still plenty of points to be dropped this year. We desperately need a backup for Eddy tho.

  27. ADI_DASSLER @ 15:07

Consensus? From those I speak to at Celtic Park – from my extended family and friends over the holiday period – not scientific, but some of the most committed Celtic supporters. People who have lived through bad Celtic times as well as good.

We, of course, cannot stop the Ibrox club improving, however we have, and have had for a long time, the ability to make sure that we are better than them when we meet. We obviously are not – that is where our current problem lies.

Whether on the pitch, or, in the dugout, we should be much better – we’re not.

I hope we may reach general agreement, or, a consensus, on the above.

  28. ERNIE LYNCH @ 15:38

There is of course a valid reason, but of course we don’t know what it is.

Whether it is an honourable reason, or not, can only be judged when it is known.

Obviously the board of directors think it is the right reason. People who feel they are ‘in the right’ are usually keen to share their reasoning.

So the real question should be “why will the board not speak out?”
