It’s over, Mr Johnston, you let your club die

449

Former chairman of Oldco Rangers, now director of Newco, Alastair Johnston, took aim in the media at Celtic supporters yesterday, saying “I always wondered about the mentality of certain Celtic supporters, not by any means most of them, who basically said our club died in February, 2012.”

Why do they do this to themselves?  If it is an attempt to convince people that liquidation did not happen, it will fail.  All that will be achieved is the re-telling of the facts.  Rangers entered administration on 14 February 2012.  It failed to come out of administration and a liquidator was appointed to dispose of the remaining assets.

Secvo Scotland Ltd bought a “bundle of assets”, including the stadium.  The administrators, Duff and Phelps, changed Rangers name to RFC 2012 Ltd and gave permission to Sevco Scotland to use the word “Rangers” in their name.  Without this permission, Newco would have gone through a similar naming process as Clydebank – Airdrie United – Airdrieonians, who were only permitted to use the word “Airdrieonians” 11 years after the liquidation of oldco Airdrieonians.

If I’m honest, if we were in those circumstances, I would tell myself every day that the Celtic I grew up with was the same as Newco Celtic.  I would have no incentive to do otherwise, so Johnston and anyone else who cares, can think what they want about Newco.

He is welcome to his thoughts, if it helps him through the trauma of what he did as chairman of Oldco during the EBT years, and the club’s failure to prepare over many years for HMRC’s legal challenge. Johnston’s board made no provision to retain enough money to trade through HMRC’s challenge, despite that legal challenge being underway years before it got to the crunch.

What he tells himself does not change the facts.  Oldco is in liquidation.  All player contracts ceased.  Assets were sold off, a deal to use the name had to be agreed.  Sevco Scotland became an associate member of the SFA while Oldco was still a member.  Oldco voted on whether to admit Sevco Scotland to the SPL.  Sevco changes its name and were granted entry to the SFL Third Division.

Johnston played a role in the demise of Rangers.  He was chairman and had a responsibility to direct the club away from dangers.  He failed and now presents an alternative reality, which is easier on the mind.

He also said, “it will be 120 years or so before you can tie with us.”  For each of those 120 years, Celtic fans and others will say, “But Rangers died in 2012”.  Just as Rangers fans are content to believe their club continues, belligerent denial is not going to change how others regard liquidation.  It’s over, Mr Johnston, you let your club die.

There was other guff about “thriving” not “surviving”.  They think they are going to win the league and that their circa £11m annual deficit is an indication of thriving.  Again, I disagree.

Seems to me that making mischief and scoring points is what you are mainly about.

You are repeating my own point back to me. Once you use seems- anything goes, so you can accuse me of murder and it has equal valifity to this assertion.

In my own head and, dare I say, with a greater understanding of my own motivation, what I was seeking to do was establish if our support were as defeatist as you suggested they were. The evidence suggests you have a distorted insight into their feelings on the matter.

I am being realistic, not being despondent.

Nope- you are claiming to be realistic. You are claiming to be realistic about future events- how does that usually work out for you? Half the votes agree, partially, with your proposition that we need to beat them twice further in this year’s leagues. I even credit the votes of those who say only 4 out of the 6 points will be needed, to your side of the proposition. That’s how generous I was in determining whether our support were as defeatist as you stated.

But we can both claim to be realistic. Only time can pass the judgement of whether we were or not. You cannot claim victory, on grounds of realism, in this matter before the event.

There is of course only ONE certainty – winning all our games will win us the title.

That is a 100% guarantee, for sure, but it is not the only way that titles are won. It is not even the usual way that titles are won. Most titles were won by teams that did drop points at some stage(s) between January and April. Even the Invincibles drew 3 games during that period.

I don’t believe ‘Rangers’ are a winning machine. I don’t believe that we cannot win the title.

I know that. I read and understood what you said were your own opinions on how the league would play out. You personally voted for option 2. It was your option 3 assertion, which you ascribed to the majority of our support, that was being put to the test.

I do think that in my book, ‘Rangers’ are favourites due to their pattern of dominance against us and their pre-split fixtures.

Again, you may state so as a prediction but not as a reality. The genuine neutral, the bookmakers, still have Celtic as 4/6 and Sevco at 27/20.

Why is my date of joining the site a matter to be brought up?

Does longevity make one more right

I don’t know when you joined the site but your appearance as MCNUT dates from very recently. I was intrigued as to whether you had a previous name or names on the blog but it does not matter much. It was the substance of your assertion that was important and which was being questioned by me, not the timing of it.

Your mini-poll is misreprentation of what I posted and the context in which it was posted – there seems to be a bee in your bonnet.

I would gladly accept any guidance as to where you were misrepresented. Was I wrong to ascribe you as voting for option 2? Was I wrong to take it that you felt most Celtic fans were in option 3 territory? Or was I wrong in ascribing my own vote to option 1? I will endeavour to correct anything of error in my typing out your own 2 assertions from earlier today.

P.S. No bee and, guess what?- no bonnet either.

    I don’t know.

It seems to me that the manager has more than one set of tactics.

There was, for example, the team formation that was being practised in the 3 games leading up to the Sevco match, and, then there was the formation actually fielded, which failed.

As Celtic by Numbers shows, the scoreline trumps all else. We were closer to beating them than I thought we were. We did not play anywhere near as badly as we did in the Betfred final but we had enough players off form, to make a determined Rangers team look good. That is the best game I have seen against us by Tavernier, Barisic and Aribo. They will not always reach that height and who knows, Morelos may score against us to replace their threat.

All I know is that we have a chance to re-group, re-train and even recruit players before the league resumes. After that we are in a close race and it will all be determined by future results.

Many people have stated that, because we won the previous 8iar, there is no guarante that this one will play out like all the others. They are right to say this.

And I say in return, that just because Rangers beat us in the last game and played very well in the Betfred final they lost, is also no guarantee that they will beat us next time or that they will beat everyone else easily.

It’s a 4 month league from here in. The first team to drop points will swing momentum but, it will still be too close to call it league over for a long time yet.

Strap yourselves in and enjoy the ride! There were many complaints that we were not being tested when we won leagues toi easily. Careful what we wish for :-)

  3. SFTB Appreciate your considered response amigo but remain unconvinced on what I’ve witnessed to date. I will however continue give NFL like RD my full support @ CP. HH 🍀

  4. Morning, have absolutely no confidence in Neil Lennon winning us this league! Absolutely hope I am back on in late May admitting I got it wrong!! Anyway time will tell

  5. 4 months is a long time in football and there will be ups and downs, let’s just hope we have more ups than downs. I would prefer we played 352, 433 or 442 for rest of the season. All these formations allow us to narrow the central midfield area of teams overload while providing eduard with someone who can stay close to him to keep defenders busy and pressurised so less donkey runs for our forward players and less secure easy prosession for opposition teams.

  13. El Hamed will be most welcome back when the going gets tough. He’s a trenches dude without a shadow of a doubt, especially after he has been through.

If we meet the huns last 16, whoever succeeds, IMO, will lose the League.

    Just talking ma petec shite.

  14. I have been ( and still am ) in Australia over the holiday period so missed the game but have followed the unfolding events since our defeat at Celtic Park.

Strikes me as inevitable that Peter Lawwell and the Celtic Board are under the cosh from a large section of the Celtic support ( well if blogs are an accurate proxy ) because the disappointment of potentially losing 9 or 10 in a row is palpable.

There can be no doubt that the Celtic Board took a view that a ( not too ) strong Rangers was required in this weak Scottish league but felt that the threat to Celtic could be contained. The flaw in all of this , at least to me, was that the media and PR machine behind Rangers had a vested interest in re- establishing the former club and once that myth of continuity was accepted it was only a short jump to seek investment, a high profile emerging manager and with a wee bit of luck against Celtic could become real challengers. The miscalculation also downplayed the resurgent bigotry which has never gone away and is an accepted part of Scottish life.

We have effectively tried to ride on the back of a tiger but we all know how that ends.

Now Celtic might yet go on to win this league and reach 9 or 10 in a row. The wind direction is not favourable but the bigger issue for me is that yet again the Celtic support looks to be leaderless. Having made the economic calculation that a prospering Rangers was required in the league ( and therefore silence in the face of overwhelming evidence around financial misconduct ) then as many on here have observed we are reaping what we sowed.

I expect lots of talk now about the league being competitive etc however if we lose it then the backlash within Celtic will make all those protests against Bob Kelly and his Board in the early 1960s look like a playground scrap.

  15. Good Morning – A Chilled and Pleasant Morning in The Chilterns…

    GARCIA LORCA @ 7:05 AM,

Excellent points very well made. Hope the backlash doesn’t materialise, insofar as the perfect storm this Celtic Board are creating for themselves isn’t visited upon us and they set the ship on the proper course.

However, that does seem unlikely and if we are led into disaster I hope the backlash is as vehement as you’ve indicated and flushes the lot of them away.

Miss you and your brothers’ contributions, hope you are doing (otherwise) well.
