It’s that time again, buckle in!

The final dice on what could become our second nine-in-a-row season is set to be cast.  I expect business to be done but the usual caveats apply, it takes agent, player, selling club and buying club to be in alignment for a deal to happen and if one gets cold feet a deal will not happen.

For me, the position of greatest need is central defence.  Jozo Simunovic and Nir Bitton are enduring injury problems which have forced their absence for much of the campaign.  The loss of multiple wingers is less a concern, as I realllllly hope we play three at the back and two strikers for much of the remainder of the season.

Buckle in!!

GO TELL THE SPARTIM on 31ST JANUARY 2020 9:42 PM

When did the need for a larger pool of center halves arise? We played four at the back until 9 days ago

    —————————————————-

Only one more injury at CB could cause serious trouble

No, 4 at the back not 4 center halves.

We’ve got 5 which should be enough, and has been judging by our results so far when we’ve played with 2. But we’ve only started with 3 since 9 days ago, so it’s not exactly an old issue.

Another CB would be great but it’s a bit unfair to dig up Celtic fit not signing a player we didn’t know we needed until halfway through the window

  3. Let’s cut the bullshit, no decent CB in leaves us wide open if we have injuries.

Not a lot to ask for to get nine, considering the treasure chest sitting there.

The huns are going bust to stop it, we bring in two hopefuls… You reap what you sow PL if your penny pinching costs us.

  4. if w don’t sign a CB and/or physical experienced midfielder we will lose the league. Look at the facts – when we take out a central defender we are all over the place. When Eduard is not in the team we don’t connect and play.

massive gamble so far from the board.

rangers will get a lift from Hagi and Kamberi – Kamberi does a good job in a below average team. Surrounded by better players he will score more goals.

I think they have the momentum

I addressed your point in a further post

How many fit CB do we have, 2 and luckily they’re the two good ones, having 5 with 3 regularly not available and it doesn’t get addressed going into the business end of the season is the PLC’s responsibility

  6. Wanyama gives you options it’s not about dropping anyone otherwise you will never sign anyone.

Anyway it’s a mute point now.

How many fit CB do we have?

We have 3 at the moment but that won’t be the case for long hopefully. Bitton’s nearly fit and hopefully El Hamed’s back soon

We can’t just sign replacements for every injured player we have

  8. CELTIC40ME

Forgot, that we recalled young centre back Stephen Welsh from Morton.

    El Hamed

    Jozo

    Jullien

    Ajer

    Bitton

    Welsh

Plenty there for the nine, Sevco have spent nothing.

  9. BSR,

seriously, how many of them can you rely on to put a run of games together,

    Elhamed still not fit,

Jozo, worse knees than me and im 55 with arthritis,

Bitton, lucky to get 3 games in a row from him

an injury to Ajer or Jullien

and we are in a bad way.

  10. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

From an article earlier this week:

“The prognosis is that Johnston might be absent for some time and, when asked if the 20-year-old’s setback might trigger late activity in the transfer market, manager Lennon said: “It might do. If we don’t bring anyone else in, I’m delighted with the squad and with 3-5-2.

“Anyway, you are limited in the number of wingers you can use. I’m not saying that’s going to be the tried and trusted formula for us going forward, but we’re playing very well with that formation.”…

It’s clear 3-5-2 has given us a real boost in performance since the NY. Compare the home game against RC with a 4-2-3-1 against the 3-5-2 performances. We need 3 fit CBs to play that formation. Nir, Jozo and Elhamed are so injury prone that we cannot rely upon. Another CB is definitely in order.

  11. Go tell the Spartim on

so We’re not trying to sign a winger to replace MJ

We need another good CB note the ‘good’ how many days each season has Bitton, Jozo been out ?

We can sign players for injured ones that’s the point. PL is gambling with history for all the plaudits on here he’ll get for Celtic’s achievements so far he’ll be remembered as the guy responsible for missing the 9 or 10 should the unthinkable happen.

  12. ST TAMS on 31ST JANUARY 2020 10:13 PM

Bitton is not and never will bea centre half

I could name another 2 from that list

  13. Gordy @ 10.14

    El Hamed

    Jozo

    Jullien

    Ajer

    Bitton

    Welsh

Give me six CB’s with better players than that list from the past 20 years?

p.s. I’ve never seen Stephen Welsh he was recalled and would presumably

    play in an emergency

  14. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

Another point, if we play 4-2-3-1, who exactly is going to be playing on the LW?

MJ injured, RC and SS gone. ME hasn’t played a full game since 10 November. He is unlikely to play till mid Feb. JH is now our starting winger? Or are we playing RC or McGregor on the wing?

Either way, we need a winger or a CB.

What the hell is the point of having £40m in the bank if we dont use it when the time calls for it. The risk of blowing 9IAR far outweighs spending a bit of money now.

  15. glendalystonsils on

Just switched on Sky sports news and the Jim Shyte transfer show . Apparently it’s official….Hagi IS the new Messi . We are doomed.

  16. Honestly, on both sides of the transfer window argument tonight there is utter gash being talked.

Sevco does not “have the momentum” as some have argued. Ludicrous statement to make. They just handed Defoe a bumper new deal and have replaced with a Hibs loanee who can’t get in Jack Ross’s team. If you’d told them at the start of the window they would be replacing Defoe for a minimum of 6 weeks with Kamberi they’d have rioted. Hagi? A famous name who couldn’t get into Fiorentina’s reserve team three years ago and has flopped in Belgium. The guy Gerrard described today as “one of the best U21 players in Europe” only signed for Genk at the start of this season and they’ve seen enough – i.e. damn all – to send him on loan to Scotland with a view to getting him off the wage bill permanently for half what they paid.

And on the other side, those denying that we’ve had a shocker … Lennon wanted three or more in. He wanted a couple of them signed before we went to Dubai. Then settled for them being in whilst we were in Dubai. Then it was “well we’re back, so in the next few days …” and he personally made it clear that he wanted experience. At one point he talked about centre backs. Then after we’d let two wide players go he wanted a winger. And this was before the injury to Mikey.

And here we sit with 90 mintues left and we’ve signed a Polish project and another Duda player.

Now I think we’ll get good value from both of them, and Soro in particular is exciting.

But we were supposed to strengthen the first team, the starters, with experience. And we have done the sum total of nil except scramble about like rank amatuers on the last day.

The manager – who many of you fought for over my strong objections and those of others – has been royally grafted here. If this all goes tits up it’s him who’ll pay with his job, unless Lawwell and Co decide that he’s a useful idiot and deflector shield from the flak that should in reality be coming to them.

I knew when Lennon was appointed that we’d ditched any pretence of showing real ambition. Lennon has performed magnificently in the job, massively exceeding my expectations. But his appointment was a shocker, the manner of it was a disgrace and he’s working with one hand behind his back.

Sevco is right up our arse, and I know exactly who I hold to be responsible for that.

  17. With All the injuries the Mighty Celts have had….. with a possible extended Euro run, it might not be bad having players out so long and subsequently mentally refreshed for a very hard 2nd half of this Tumultuous Season.

Gdansk is Looming. Ominously … Haha.

Come on Celtic, I hope the new iteration out of Hatesville get through the UEFA rounds until the 9 is secured.

  18. lennon has mentioned his desire for Wanyama time and time and time again! we can cover his wages for 4 months and increase our probability of winning the title. The marketing from 9IAR would more than cover that cost.

We also have Bencovic available – both players know the league, know how to win and would instantly provide the team with a much needed boost.

hoping for a surprise in the next hour but I’ve never felt the board are aligned with fans ambition!

  19. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 31ST JANUARY 2020 10:23 PM

El Hamed and Jozo are good quality but Jozo’s first league of the season was Killie away. El Hamed has played 4 league games this season. We can’t rely upon them to be fit for the run in. They are both injury prone players.

  20. BSR,

there are 2 reliable centre halfs on that list,

    Elhamed is a right back

Jozo is an accident waiting to happen,

Bitton is a midfielder that cant tackle,

maybe the young boy is a player, hope we dont need to find out

  21. Just going to watch that prick white on sky and hopefully his face will match his hair if we pull a rabbit out of the bag.

    Not very hopeful though. 🙄
