IZAGUIRRE EURO BLOW

EMILIO IZAGUIRRE will miss the start of Celtic’s Champions League campaign after a shock international U-turn.

The left-back previously told Honduras he wouldn’t be available for the CONCACAF Gold Cup because the competition, which runs from July 7-26, clashes with the European qualifying rounds.

But Izaguirre has had a change of heart and will now sacrifice his club commitments – which includes pre-season training – in order to play for his country.

The Honduran squad will meet on 25th May for friendlies against El Salvador, Paraguay, Brazil and Mexico.

Their first Gold Cup group game is against co-hosts United States on 7th July. The last group game is on the evening of 13th July  which means Izaguirre will miss the first leg of Celtic’s Champions League second qualifying round fixture on 14/15th July.

If Honduras progress in the tournament, Izaguirre could also be unavailable for the return leg on 21/22nd July.

Izaguirre said: “I’m available for the friendlies. My plans are to be called to the national team, if selected.

“Confusion arose earlier because I thought we’d be in the Scottish Cup Final, which would have meant I couldn’t play those games. I’m ready for the 25th May camp.

“It depends on what the coach Jorge Luis Pinto and Celtic say, they are the bosses.”
