Jack-of-all-trades

1699

I was initially surprised to hear we’re tracking a Jack-of-all-trades defensive midfielder-cum-central defender.  Neil Lennon’s clear preference in central defence is Efe Ambrose and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom have been in excellent form this season, but he has backup in the form of Charlie Mulgrew, or even Mikael Lustig, who has played there before.

Defensive midfield, along with striker, is one of the key positions Celtic should be looking to strengthen; so a dedicated specialist would seem the better option, but our last outstanding specialist in that area arrived with exactly the same CV.  I remember the disputes here when Neil Lennon talked about Victor Wanyama being able to play centre half.  He could, but he didn’t.

It’s more important that we do our recon well than utilise everything in a player’s locker.  Buying from England is usually expensive, but at least if affords you the opportunity to solicit plenty of reliable opinion on a player.

  1. Re Jinky/ Emlyn Hughes

I mind Emlyn appearing on Just A Game ( great Willie McIlvanney documentary) and saying that when he played against Jimmy- presumably the 2-0 win over England in 74- he was so humiliated by Jimmy that he was ’embarrassed to come off at the end’ . And Hughes was no , publicly at least, no lover of Scots

  2. All this talk of Wee Willie & Wee Jinky has jolted my memory, anyone on hear old enough to remember Hand Bags Scott, another very good winger by the way..??

  3. weeman,

Do you mean Alec Scott that played for Rongers? Later transferred to Everton, I believe.

If so, I saw him return to Ibrox with Everton and score as the Merseysiders beat the blues 3-1–I think.

Was this the Scott who Henderson ousted from rangers and Scotland . And who then became part of the then mighty “Bank of England ” team Everton?

  5. For Ian Bhoy 929; bobbyrussell ; tallybhoy etc :-

The Terry Cooper / Norman Hunter debate is why I left it to My Father –

I was only 7 and still living off memories of “the big one” when I was 4.

Anyway, I forgot to contribute to THEE debate – the one on signings:-

Maybe Lenny is looking at another Centre Back to play with Efe –

then he can let “big virg” be our target man striker?

Just a thought….. but then this player will have to be THAT DAMNED GOOD as it’s Virgil who makes Efe play like a real Centre Half. Don’t do it Lenny!! – I don’t wan’t Efe the BOMBSCARE back.

We really need a PROVEN GOALSCORER and A CREATIVE MIDFIELDER (NO10). Please! please! please!

Another Centre Half? – not so sure.

  6. Two other good wingers of that era were Cowan of Partick and Edwards of Dunfermiline. I do not know what was in the water at that time, but we produced good, fast, tricky wingers. Bring back the W formation!!

Alex Scott? Saw him play against us for Hibs ( I think) which must have been very near the end of his career.

I think he was never quite in with the bricks at Ibrox and there was, according to my dad, consternation amongst the Huns when he ( Scott not my dad!) was chosen ahead of Willie H for the England game ( possibly when still on Rangers books)

How I wholeheartedly agreed with your post here (and many others) especially the last paragraph!

“The only fair route for all past, present and future clubs is to administer the rules as they exist at the time, interpreted without fear or favour”.

Which set me thinking back to the old flags and banners debate and what a superb one this would make. On the grounds of having fair play for all, rich or poor , big or small! Not just Celtic but all clubs. The right colours and slogan, that would be a cause worth fighting for, above and beyond nationalities.

It’s great that you and some others are still trying to organise the fans of all Scottish clubs to unite as they did before against the corruption at the top of Scottish football, against the grain of the seeming apathy of many and the disgrace of our clubs lack of action/effort or acceptance of this.

I’m not into twitter or facebook but I will watch for progress and any opportunity that I can help.

    Alec Scott ?

    I remember him .

I also remember seeing him playing against Fiorentina in the first leg of the 1961 European CupWinners Cup Final.. . Score was Deady Bears 0.-Fiorentina 2 . The Fiorentina fullback had Scott in his backpocket..

A workmate of my old man took me to the game —-a Fiorentina supporter who had moved to Glasgow to find work.

  14. I noticed on Newsnow the other day STV had an article asking you to click on and watch Stoke’s tackle on Lasley, so I e-mailed them……….

I see that today you are showing the Anthony Stokes tackle on Keith Lasley, is it possible that tomorrow you could show the Keith Lasley tackle on Adam Matthews that put Adam out of the game for several months, I am making a compilation DVD of Keith Lasley tackles and I missed that one.

I will be sending the DVD to UEFA/SFA in the hope that we can clean up the game in Scotland.

  18. Kenny Aird was one of the great wee wingers of that era. Big Tim as well had been released by Celtic as a yougster in 1965. Was at a St Johnstone game when wee Jimmy landed a right-hook on Kenny which would have made Jim Watt proud right in front of the Jungle. Early bath for the Wee Mahn (RIP).

Around the mid-1960s, Celtic had three very promising outside-rights, each one smaller than the other. around 1966, Stein had been preparing Tony McBride to challenge Jimmy Johnstone for the number 7 berth and this could have been in retrospect which Kenny Aird was allowed to leave. If my memory serves we well, Tony was released one summer after appearing in court and found guilty of assault on his wife (please correct me someone if I am mistaken). A potentially great career was ruined.

    Rangers in liquidation Q&A

    By Martin Conaghan

    BBC Scotland

BBC Sport examines what comes after liquidation for Rangers after HMRC decided not to approve Charles Green’s Company Voluntary Arrangement offer.

Can Rangers newco get back in to the Scottish Premier League?

When the company is liquidated, its registrations with the Scottish Football Association and the Scottish Premier League will be terminated. The new company will not automatically inherit the old registrations.

The newco would have to request a transfer of Rangers’ share in the SPL. The SPL will then vote on whether to admit the newco to the top-flight. The SPL rules require eight of its member clubs to vote in favour of a share to be transferred to another company or club. This would require seven other SPL clubs to vote in favour of transferring the oldco’s share to the newco, since Rangers will have a vote.

Will the SPL issue any punishments to the newco?

This has been the subject of much debate recently. The SPL decided not to vote on rules introducing punishments for a prospective newco, because the situation has not yet arisen.

The SPL insists it will deal with each situation on its merits. However, it is likely that the SPL would seek to apply sanctions to a newco in an attempt to deter other clubs from following the same route. Sanctions could include a period of reduced income from media rights and sponsorship, a points deduction and restrictions on player transfers.

What if the application to transfer the SPL share fails?

If the SPL rejects the share transfer, the new club could then make an application to join the Scottish Football League. If successful, it would then apply for SFA membership. The new club can only apply for SFA membership when it has a competition to participate in. An opening would arise in the SFL if a club is promoted from the First Division to replace Rangers in the top flight.

All applications to the SFA are assessed on their merits. However, the SFA say any sanctions placed upon the oldco would be taken into consideration to act as a deterrent to other clubs following the same route. Additionally, the new club will not be able to participate in European competition for three years.

    Who actually owns Rangers’ assets?

At present, Craig Whyte is the majority Rangers shareholder after Sir David Murray sold his shareholding to the Motherwell businessman for £1 in May 2011.

    Play media

Interview – Rangers joint administrator Paul Clark

Whyte currently holds a floating charge over Ibrox, Murray Park and the Albion Street car park, which were transferred to Liberty Corporate Limited in April. Liberty Corporate is Rangers’ parent company and its sole shareholder is another company known as Liberty Capital Limited, which is owned by Whyte and registered in the British Virgin Islands. Whyte’s father, Thomas Whyte, is the sole director of Liberty Corporate.

The floating charge is not guaranteed if the club is liquidated and could be subject to a legal challenge by the appointed liquidators.

Will the players all transfer to the newco?

Under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006, all employees have the legal right to transfer to the new employer on their existing terms and conditions of employment and with all their existing employment rights and liabilities intact.

It could prove problematic for the newco to maintain the level of wages currently being paid to players if the club’s income is reduced. Similarly, employees are under no obligation to accept the terms of the transfer to the new company and can terminate their employment contracts.

Effectively, this means that when Rangers is liquidated, all current players would be free to seek new clubs and there would be no transfer fees due to the newco. However, there could be complications with player contracts under Fifa, Uefa and SFA regulations.

    Can the newco buy players?

Technically, there are no restrictions on the new club purchasing players during allocated transfer windows as long as it holds an SFA licence.

However, the current club is under a transfer embargo for entering administration on 14 February and was also handed a 12-month transfer embargo by an SFA appeal tribunal for bringing the game into disrepute, which was set aside by the Court of Session in Edinburgh. The SFA appelate tribunal has still to meet to discuss what punishment should be handed down to Rangers.

The punishment would not automatically transfer to the newco, although the SFA has said any sanctions levied on the old club would have to be taken into consideration when assessing the newco’s application for SFA membership in order to deter other clubs from following the same route.

What happens to the club’s history?

The Rangers Football Club PLC is a public limited company registered in Scotland (company number: SC004276) and was incorporated on 27 May, 1899. When the current company is officially liquidated, all of its corporate business history will come to an end.

When this happened to Airdrieonians in 2002, all of the trophies, titles and records associated with the club were discontinued and a new club, Airdrie United FC, took over. Airdrieonians’ official history ended in 2002, then Airdrie United’s took over.

The answer lies principally in the eye of the beholder. Some supporters will view the new Rangers as the same Rangers, while others will feel the old Rangers no longer exist.
