Jack-of-all-trades

1699

I was initially surprised to hear we’re tracking a Jack-of-all-trades defensive midfielder-cum-central defender.  Neil Lennon’s clear preference in central defence is Efe Ambrose and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom have been in excellent form this season, but he has backup in the form of Charlie Mulgrew, or even Mikael Lustig, who has played there before.

Defensive midfield, along with striker, is one of the key positions Celtic should be looking to strengthen; so a dedicated specialist would seem the better option, but our last outstanding specialist in that area arrived with exactly the same CV.  I remember the disputes here when Neil Lennon talked about Victor Wanyama being able to play centre half.  He could, but he didn’t.

It’s more important that we do our recon well than utilise everything in a player’s locker.  Buying from England is usually expensive, but at least if affords you the opportunity to solicit plenty of reliable opinion on a player.

If memory serves me well, Celtic didn`t push Jinky quite as much as Rangers did Willie Henderson. A situation then arose were Alec Scott was first choice for Scotland and second choice for Rangers !

I was at that game v St Johnstone. I thought we were beaten 1-0.

Re the relative merits of thems heroes v ours, the arguments are always settled when we say that we won the big cup. End of.

on the garincha debate, I remember ma wee granda telling me a story regarding garincha, maybe one of our older members can maybe back this up,

the story was that garincha was troubled by a niggly knee injury for around 2 seasons, keepimg him out of a lot of games for both club and country, that off season garincha was booked in to get his wisdom tooth removed, and “hey presto” his injury completely cleared up, maybe an urban myth, but it had me spell bound at the time thinking toothache gave him a bad knee..

It’s a long time ago! But my memory is that the first defeat I saw in the fledh was the 70 Cup Final when RH Davidson intervened. I mind they beat us in early 71-2 season in front of another huge crowd and it was the last league game we lost ’til the last game of the season.

  13. Although the focus of attention has been on potential departures from Coventry City during the transfer window, manager Steven Pressley is hopeful of sealing a deal shortly for an attacking midfielder, thought to be Celtic’s Dylan McGeouch.

‘I’d like to get him in the group because we have a lot of games in the month of February so we`re definitely going to have to bring in a couple of players,’ said Pressley, quoted in the Coventry Telegraph.

Not a huge fan of the loan system, Pressley may see the 21-year-old as a potential permanent signing as he has struggled to break into the Celtic first team.

Indeed he may have been replaced in the pecking order by another midfielder currently on loan in League One, 20-year-old Callum McGregor scoring 12 goals in a struggling Notts County side so far this season and earning rave reviews for his performances.

Confirming how pleased he is with McGregor’s progress, Celtic manager Neil Lennon told his club’s official website recently: ‘There will be another couple of players going out on loan. Paul George is going out to Hamilton Accies, while Jackson Irvine and Tony Watt are still on year-long loan deals and those will continue, and we will look to put two or three other ones out as well.’

Good luck to Ki tonight at Old Trafford.

It is academic who wins this tie as I think City will bulldoze either of these two in the final

  15. From ” valley talk”

Tell Celtic where to go. Kermorgant stays.

This is news to precisely no one. But it’s worth re-iterating as the Frenchman is attracting interest from Celtic. Neil Lennon was at the Kassam Stadium watching the striker last night and although scouting presence was always to be expected, the presence of a busy manager at such a game suggests serious interest from the Scottish champions.

The sad reality of football is that every player has a price. Even those cult heroes whose performances are often restorations of the game’s romance. With Kermorgant coming to the end of his contract, and with no future re-sale value at 32, any cash offer this January would put the club in a Catch-22.

Sell now, raise some money and protect yourself from losing a prized asset for nout? Or hold onto him in the knowledge he’s one of your best chances of survival and take the financial risk? For a businessman like Duchâtelet that’s probably a bit of a dilemma. For me, there’s only one answer.

In the spirit of baring one’s soul, a la St Stivs 19.49, I’ve never named one of Thems as a favourite player but I do recall my brother, on the occasion of his tenth birthday, asking for a Rangers jersey and informing us that his favourite player was Derek Parlane. I still wake up in a cold sweat. My old dad went and got him said strip too. My brother passed away last November – unrepentant!

If City bring their A game they will beat most teams because they have too much firepower.

Conversely Sunderland would have a better chance in the final than United in my view because City have had bother with lesser sides.

    Remember Wigan last year.

Granted that was more Mancini’s fault but on any given day when the underdog goes into it they might get lucky.

Sunderland in the FA vs Leeds United was the best day in their history and they were massive underdogs that day.

I think they did in either 71 or 72- relegating Los Hunos to 4th. I think the Saints had a bit of a run in the Fairs /UEFA Cup when they got to the last 16. Jeez nowadays we’d think they were doing brilliantly to qualify for the competition proper.
