Jack-of-all-trades

1699

I was initially surprised to hear we’re tracking a Jack-of-all-trades defensive midfielder-cum-central defender.  Neil Lennon’s clear preference in central defence is Efe Ambrose and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom have been in excellent form this season, but he has backup in the form of Charlie Mulgrew, or even Mikael Lustig, who has played there before.

Defensive midfield, along with striker, is one of the key positions Celtic should be looking to strengthen; so a dedicated specialist would seem the better option, but our last outstanding specialist in that area arrived with exactly the same CV.  I remember the disputes here when Neil Lennon talked about Victor Wanyama being able to play centre half.  He could, but he didn’t.

It’s more important that we do our recon well than utilise everything in a player’s locker.  Buying from England is usually expensive, but at least if affords you the opportunity to solicit plenty of reliable opinion on a player.

    Daft question from long ago:

Remember when Wim left after winning the league ? Celtic played Sporting Lisbon in a friendly anyone recall the score ?

Also, in the old stadium, does anyone know why the club roofed the (whole) Rangers end before the Celtic end ?

  10. bcw…

Because there was already a roof at the Celtic end tho not full cover.

In fact when the new enclosure first went up the club suggested fans swap ends to create a new Celtic end. The fans thought not!

Similar type story…….some Scottish/British player released by a British club due to endless days on the treatment table due to an ongoing back problem, ended up plying his trade in the lower regions of the Bundesliga. Physio decides his back problem is down to a wisdom tooth which, when he bites down puts his jaw out of alignment, which in turn puts his spine out also. Physio sends him to dentist to get the offending tooth extracted and voila, jaw in place, spine in place and no more back problems. Day after extraction he plays in Champions league final and scores a double hatrick in a 6-7 reverse. Okay….I made the last bit up but the rest is apparently true……..or…..twoo…..as Sir Albert might say

  12. Wee Wullie Henderson was the landlord of the Buchan Arms Broxburn.

A lovelier man you could not meet, a real love for that deid team , but despite that a genuine guy who nobody had a bad word against.

The Irony was/is that the Buchan is a massive Celtic pub!!

I don’t know of one Tim whose met him who doesn’t think the wee guy is magic.

Now I’m too young to have seen Jinky or Wullie in action but I’ve been in Wullies company a few times.

What I do know is that Wee Jinky was Wullies hero .

Wullie knows Jinky was miles better and from what I’ve heard Wullie was a great player so Jinky must have been a genius!

My Dad says Jinky was in the same company as Pele, Eusabio, Best Cruyff & Di Stefano.

Jinky Johnston…. Greatest ever Celtic player…..official

A wee Update: The old dog I was on about last week has been reunited with his owners. He comes from a loving home, but was spiked when fireworks went off near his home. Believe it or not, he is 20 yrs old. The SSPCA would like to thank everyone who showed concern for him. That includes you guys. Well done. :))

Talking about Garrincha earlier…my wee ma, God rest her soul, was born on the same day as the Brazilian magician…28 October 1933.

  17. Boa noite. On the Garrincha front. Man’s a total legend here and I have to say as big an entertainer wi a baw at his feet as Jinky. The Brasilian national side were never beaten when Garrincha and Pele were in the same team.

Anybody interested should read his biography which is full of cracking stories (on and off the pitch) about the “Little Bird” a man who lost his virginity to a goat (wi nae a ludge in sight)!

Sadly alcohol played a big factor in how big a star he could’ve been

I’ve lost my love for football. I still hold Celtic in my heart. But it no longer excites me. Nothing to do with one horse leagues or the absence of the hateful ones, in fact their absence revived my spirits for a while. No, it’s to do with Billionaire owners, millionaire players, people spending more time concerned about Celtic not getting a striker, not fighting the SFA, not filling the stands than they do on worrying or acting on welfare reform, the sell of of their health service, grinding poverty, food banks and so on and so on and so on……..

Fitba used to be a release. Now it’s a form of capture.

They are a deeply average team.

Make sure you check individual odds – might be better than 100/1.

Think the following was being offered:

    LC @ 4/9

    EPL @11/10

    FAC @ 7/2?

    CL @ 14/1.

By my abacus 4some better than 100/1.
