Jakarta, Xiamen and Tokyo, the travels of our Japanese internationals

94

As European international players’ commitments wind down before the resumption of club games at the weekend, our three Japanese internationals are in Xiamen, China, for a noon (UK time) kick-off.  The next 48 hours will see them fly to Japan, London before arriving back in Glasgow.

Consecutive days of disrupted sleep without appropriate post-match conditioning, or treatment which may be necessary to an injury picked up, is part of the job for Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Kyogo.

After arriving in Tokyo, they had an 8 hour flight to Jakarta for a game on Friday, then back to Tokyo, before a 5 hour flight for today’s game in Xiamen.

Brendan Rodgers will see the players on Friday and make an assessment of their suitability to play at Tynecastle on Saturday evening.  They are not machines and we cannot expect them to perform as normal.  I would rather they were fit and ready for Tuesday than had to endure another game this weekend.

What do you do if no one will take the Technical Director job?  Give the role to someone already in the building.  It’s a bit like appointing a marketing guy as CEO and will lead to the same results.

  3. Perhaps we should speak less about the Huns making in house appointments given we sacked a CEO after weeks to appoint a guy already 10 years at the club…

  4. Sobering article on the air miles of our Eastern warriors.

Not sure we should criticise any other club who makes appointments from the office next door! Our own record is a little questionable

  5. i beg to differ, having went external and hired a ceo from the scottish sports world, for whatever reason it didnt work out and he left, only then was the in-house guy promoted.

where is dom mckay now ?

having trumpeted the guy was the outstanding candidate, have a closer look at the rugby accounts, a loss making entity, even with multiple concerts with huge attendnaces, alcohol licenses, and rich supporters, they cant make a profit.

i struggle a wee bit with players coming from all around the world why did they need to go to japan at all.

i suppose there are a lot of european based players, could they not all arrive in jakarta together ? and base themselves there, then a flight to china day before game, then return to europe from there, rather than back to japan.

they aint making it easy or helping the planet.

anyways, all 3 celts on the subs bench, 0-0 halftime, and japan needing one more win to qualify.

they aint going to be tired from playing too much football are they.

  9. and japan score twice while i was in a different time zone,

With all due respect there is a world/universe/galaxy of a difference between what others, any others, are doing, and the ‘incident’ you mention. I’m sure you know that.

We parted company with someone who in the short time in the job was not a ‘good fit’. Some may say he was an oval ball in a round hole. We acted quickly and decisively to rectify the situation.

Michael Nicholson was in the right place at the right time, was known and respected at Celtic Park, and had been part of a successful team which had delivered and continues to deliver the goods – it was the right appointment

This was an exceptional occurrence – Celtic do not operate a ‘knee-jerk’ hire & fire policy. I’m sure that when the club looks to recruit for senior positions in future from outside Celtic Park, lessons will have been learned. HH

Daniel Cummings getting promoted to the first team group?, Daniel Kelly going in the opposite direction to Millwall. Contrast developing players at Celtic, very different to August 1968, when Celtic Reserves needed to defeat Partick Thistle Reserves by at least seven goals to win our Reserve League Cup section over Rangers Reserves,. We won 12–0 and Luigi Macari scored four that day, known as Lou to everyone except latter day hero Fergus McCann. Not all of ‘The Quality Street Gang’ as they became known, ‘made it’ at Celtic.

Yet another disservice to the game in Scotland by our former rivals, was their inability to be able afford to finance a reserve side, a direct cause of the collapse of the reserve league, little did we know at the time the first team and the whole club, would also go under. Why develope players when side letters, and EBT’s already ensured the cream of the crop and covered all bases, now Trigger’s broom, suffering from the sins of their fathers.

All Lennoxtown players, there are others but most of the list below, have found their level well below Celtic wherever they are. On loan players might ‘make it’ at Celtic, Ben Doak might even make it at Liverpool where he’s progressed to a loan, and has got a way to go. The original modern day Celtic rebel Islam Feruz, (29) has made a comeback (of sorts) training with Kilbarchan juniors.

A list,…Barry Hepburn, Liam Morrison, Jack Aitchison, Calvin Miller, Jamie McCart, Liam Henderson, Eoghan O’Connell, Euan Henderson, Conor Hazard, Karamoko Dembele, Adam Montgomery, Armstrong Oko Flex, Dane Murray, Joey Dawson, Owen Moffat, Ben Doak, Bosun Lawal, Ben Summers, Rocco Vata, Mitchell Frame, and Daniel Kelly.

Juventus, Monaco, Club Brugge, and Atalanta might have been monitoring Rocco Vata at Celtic they were even mentioned in a transfer ‘tug of war’ that somehow ended at Watford. Maybe his agent it suggests, had a fertile imagination, Daniel Kelly’s similar game time wish at Celtic now Millwall, hasn’t exactly matured yet either, as he’s slipped out of the squad there too.

Kenny Dalglish was famously ‘farmed out’ to Cumbernauld then made it at Celtic before pausing till he was 26, to take Liverpool and Europe by storm. The Celtic ‘pathway’ is there, rarely smooth for most but there. Even Calum MacGregor back from loan and labelled ‘winger’ by Ronny Deila didn’t flourish instantly, learning your trade takes years sometimes even for the very best of footballers.

They reckon a mere 3 – 4 % of all academy players make it to professional level, I’d wager our academy scores higher than most. There’s plenty of Celtic produce especially now in the modern game where Celtic are also the only real buyers. Filtered throughout football, young under developed players who want ‘game time now’ no certainty to be in Brendan Rodgers universal squad, or any part of same old Celtic.

Common sense suggests we rest the 3 Japanese players on Saturday

Have them on the bench just in case

Ideal scenario is to get in front by a couple of goals and not use them at all

    As for the Hun appointment

The guy is not proven in his current job

But given their financial state it makes sense to double up in jobs until better times arrive.

An interesting and informative piece which I enjoyed reading.

In my opinion the die is cast with regard to young promising players coming through at Celtic. The money offered by clubs in the elite leagues will in almost all cases spirit the youngster away. It is in the interest of their agents to seek out lucrative moves for clients. It will be a daily ongoing search and they leave no stone unturned.

I have a young relative who was at a Scottish Championship club since the age of eight and was ‘guided’ by his agent to a lowly EFL Division One club with wages astronomical compared to his previous club. I would imagine that Ben Doak’s salary is on a par with some of the first team squad at Celtic.

So the question must be asked – are we just being ‘busy fools’ in running an expensive youth set-up when the brightest and most likely can be ‘creamed-off’ without ever making it as a regular first team squad member? We might of course turn up an Aiden McGeady, Kieran Tierney, or, Callum McGregor from time to time, but these days would any of those three have even reached our first team.

Champions league stand outs, most distance ran, and fastest runner.

we should close the academy and sack those anayltics people.

  19. Interesting comments on the Academy and those that have left prematurely. Doak is the one player who looks like he can make it a higher level, but he would have been a first team player with Celtic by now and would have the opportunity to leave in a similar fashion to Tierney.

Vata looks a decent player and does get some game time at Watford. However, it is worth noting that he is behind Vakoun Bayo in the pecking order, and he failed to establish himself over two seasons at Celtic. Not many of the others have provided evidence that their careers have developed beneficially by leaving Celtic’s Academy at an early stage.

Good evening all from the Queens Park Cafe. A rather chilly night in old Glasgow Town. Take care out and about folks, icy conditions.

  21. In a nine year career Bayo has scored 56 goals in 182 senior appearances. His 4 goals in a single game is definitely an outlier
