January strategy and short-term cover

1488

I know what you’re thinking, let’s hope we get more exciting January signings like Pawel Brozek, Rabiu Ibrahim and Freddie Ljungberg.

It’s slightly unfair to mock our January transfer business. Kris Commons arrived two years ago and constituted a one man title challenge for a few months (and still delights).  Georgios Samaras and Barry Robson arrived in 2008 and went a long way to ensuring the title came to Celtic.  We went signing crazy in January (and 1st Feb) 2010 when Robbie Keane, Diomansy Kamara and soon-to-be World Cup final legend…. Edson Braafheid arrived.  Robbie proved his class but it was all in vain, alas.

Most of our worries seem to be focussed on protecting those already in the squad.  I’m not too concerned one way or another for the Juventus tie, which will take care of itself, but decisions made today will need to consider the Champions League qualifier challenges we will face in August.  If we sell Gary Hooper today there is no guarantee we will be able to recruit his replacement until the final gasp of the August window.

So far this month we have addressed long-term strategy and short-term cover, if we do any more business I’d be happy with more of the same.

Contrary to career expectations 29-year-old Edson Braafheid is not now a delivery driver for Argos but he’s not playing a lot of football these days either.

If the server overheats later I’m on Twitter, @CQN, and I’ll do my best to figure out Facebook, CQN Magazine, too.

Agree with you but his value falls in the summer if he only has 12 months left on his contract and won’t sign new one.

  6. TBB and GerryG

There are two stages to the EBT process:

    1. Rangers funded a sub-trust for the named beneficiary of that trust, the player; and

    2. The trust loaned the funds within the trust to the player.

The FTT was primarily concerned with step 2 of the process, whether the trust used the funds in trust to make a contractual payment to the player or whether they made a discretionary loan.

I’d expect LNS to focus more on point 1, in particular whether Rangers funding a sub-trust for the benefit of the player constitutes a payment in respect of playing football.

I agree with TBB as I think it could go either way and can see both sides to the debate on what is an obvious grey area in the rules.

using windows7. Is there problem with reading comments? Says on homepage there are 209, spread over 4 pages. I click on the fourth page and can see only first post, with number of comments reduced to 200. This is a regular problem, both with windows and on Android Smartphone.

Alexsandr – so Steve, 2nd bid rejected you get 3rd bid. Third bid rejected, you get 4th bid.

    4th bid rejected, you get….?

    Steve – 5th bid?

    Alexsandr – yes 5th bid, Steve….very goood.

  13. TT,

Cheers will try that. Not always signed in, and as I manifestly am right now, and can read your comment no bother, perhaps you have solved the problem for me.

  14. I realise all the transfer talk regarding Hooper (and to some extent Wanyama) has been quite tiring but I think we should be reasonably pleased that bids haven’t came in for some of our other players. For example, I think Lustig and Matthews are good enough to walk straight into most EPL sides, and even the likes of Commons and Broonie would do a good job for most teams. As for Fraser, I find it amazing that this month has came and gone without any serious interest from a top club (not complaining obviously!) It’s maybe a blessing that other countries don’t take much notice of Scottish football.

  15. I saw big Fraser Foster in the business class lounges, passed through every lounge shaking hands. and snaps taken.

I would imagine it would be hard to get your photo taken with big Fraser,if you do a head&shoulders shot you would have to stand a fair bit back if you want to get both heads in the picture.

Matthews is a player we should be negotiating with now to extended his contract. It runs out in July 2015, the longer we leave it the more it will become a Hooper scenario. we really should be adding another 2 or 3 years as he will continue to improve.

  18. I must admit to being a wee bit worried about Fraser`s absence during a transfer window. With just over nine hours to go, I am becoming a little more relaxed.

I am confident neither Gary H nor Big Vic will be leaving but, if his improvement continues, I won`t be surprised to see Victor off in the summer window (is that the Patio?).

Hoops? Possibly he will stay for years. Even his name suits us.

  21. A loan is a payment which is expected to be paid back, usually with interest and usually within a predefined time period.

Not a single penny of these so-called “loans” has ever been paid back.

That is using the term “loan” as a calculated way to increase payments without payint due tax, plain and simple.

The side-letters also confirm that these were payments, not loans.

Thus, the fact that they were not fully declared, by the very person who is now president of the SFA, one of the best administrators in the game (ie someone who knows the rules & regulations inside out and doesn’t make mistakes) is clear evidence of a calculated scheme intended to cheat both the tax payer and every other club who ever competed against RFC(il).

Only the most one-eyed, blue-nosed idiot would swallow the spiel emanating from Sevconia.

Any attempt to whitewash this will negate the need for league reconstruction. Every club in the land would finally have to face up to the reality of the deep seated corruption at the heart of Scottish football. Clearly structured for one club only.

What’s the point in trying to compete when the winner has already been established?

A whitewash will be the death-knell of Scottish football.
