January transfer window 2016

I’ve heard a lot about Patrick Roberts. He’s burdened by enormous expectations, compared to the greats since shortly after his 17th birthday. Manchester City moved 2 starts and 17 substitute appearances into his Fulham career – £12m on the basis of 399 minutes football.

He’s here to force his way into the team between now and the end of the season, and be ready for the European challenges ahead. I think we’re going to enjoy watching this lad.

We saw around 80 minutes of Erik Sviatchenko on Sunday. As I said yesterday, he’s probably our best defender, not that that is taking enormous liberties. In Virgin van Dijk we managed to recruit a dependable defender who wasn’t scared of the ball, and was first to organise those around him. If Erik’s near that standard, he’ll do well.

Ryan Christie (20) is a No. 10. We need a No. 10. He’s 12 years younger than Kris Commons, the only comparable player in the first team squad. Kris has been our MVP for more seasons than anyone else currently on the books, but we’ve been far too dependent on him, which has become acutely evident recently, when he’s out injured.

There’s an argument that we could have done with another No. 10 during our European campaign but it’s far from clear Ryan would have got his chance. We’ll see a good bit of him before the end of the season.

Many of the things I could say about Colin Kazim-Richards I alluded about Carlton Cole when he signed. He’s a physical presence, not easily intimidated, should be an effective foil for Leigh Griffiths.

Colin joins with an actual rap sheet. Online comments yesterday recalled the reaction the day Griffiths signed. At the time I wrote that it’s important for Celtic to affirm positive values in Leigh’s life. The player hasn’t looked back, he’s every inch a positive role model. It’s now important the club and Colin work to ensure a similar result.

Aidan Nesbitt (18) is also a No. 10. He’s the player you’re most likely to hear development and youth coaches talk about. The next stage of his development required him to play against men. Four months in the Premiership playing for Partick will achieve this.

Farewall Nadir Ciftci, who is off to Turkey until the end of the season. I described Nadir as less like a Ronny Deila player than any other I’ve watched and known Celtic to be interested in. He has a touch and is a better player than we’ve seen, but he was built from different material than practically all other Deila signings.

Last month’s business will hopefully mean we have a settled and secure defence for the qualifiers, something missing at the beginning of this season, something missing on Sunday afternoon.  The Kazim-Richards signing could go a number of different ways.  The player will get his chance to live up to his own expectations.

    Over and Over

Well said from earlier. You’ll probably find the negs’ keyboards mysteriously disappear when we win tomorrow!

  2. What amount of ticket price increase would you accept if it guaranteed a better quality of signing on the pitch?

  3. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Geordie Munro

Ha ha. Yeah that’s true! Hopefully we get a couple of easy games in the first two rounds.

Not sure about Efe. I was assuming he would be suspended but don’t know for sure.

  4. Tontine

It didn’t immediately occur to me but the events of yesterday got me thinking along those lines.

  5. We were playing so well before the sending off

I don’t think there was any obvious candidates to be hooked.

  6. Playing with 10 men is always an uphill struggle, personally at 1-1 I would have removed the striker for a Central defender played deeper and narrower and brought my midfield 2 closer to the defence, then asking my remaining three attacking midfielder’s to do as much damage on the break as possible playing the percentages, ie shoot on sight win free kicks corners throw in’s. But even doing this I don’t know how things would have gone, it’s just my method for dealing with a red card. I think if Ross County had less space to attack and more time with the ball they would possibly have gifted us better opportunity’s to score. But I refuse to criticise Ronnie’s tactics or choices I have not been watching the players training or in preparation so it’s his call.

    Hail Hail.

    Beatbhoy,

yes, a draw would be a good result.

    Geordie,

I was thinking tactically, rather than form, when I suggested Armstrong.

    Anyway, onwards and upwards.

  8. By the way, I don’t want to be too negative BUT with Simo’s injury record so far… It might not be a bad thing to have Boyata and Sviatchenko getting a run together

They might be the pairing after all

P.S. Boyata has quitely improved of late

The dust hadn’t settled the last time I spoke with EC67 :-)

Armstrong would have been a popular choice today,

    because he had another mare.

The thing is he will he start at Pitoddrie? – he’s taking an

    absolute hammering in cyberspace.

I may be stating the obvious here but reading thru some of the posts I’m not so sure. Sacking Ronnie / John Collins / JK would be a complete and utter waste of time, assuming the men that hired them remain in place. All that would happen is we would get a new but similar management team put in place and they would be given the same remit to that given to Ronnie / John Collins / JK. If its change we want it has to start at the very top, not half way down the chain of command.

  11. Tim alloy,

    Quite.

    Thom,

Somebody had to come off. Not arguing with your choice neebs;)

Having the word ‘shit’ in the photo kind of detracts from it, dontcha think?

  13. We could have tried to play with 10 men, without making a sub,Bitton to CB bring Armstrong in 1,where he is far more comfortable, and see where it may have took us.

Agree. I really thought we had turned a corner with that mature and effective Qarabag performance. Showed that Ronny actually does know how to put out a formation to keep it tight.

Makes it even more of a mystery to me why he doesn’t do that when the situation requires it – like say when we are 1 or 2 goals up in a CL qualifier, or on Sunday.

Regarding our need for a defensive middy to protect the defence, I would give Efe a run there.

I think I remember when he signed for us the talk was that this was his favoured/natural position?

Just a thought. Now on to slaughtering the Sheep.

I said to my son on Sunday that Ronny should take off Kieran Tierney and go three at the back with Mik, Dedryck and Erik. Keep the rest of the team as it was set up. Kieran was my MOTM on Sunday. :))

Why do Canadian Geese need Parka Jackets?

    ————————

They don’t. It’s just that, being Canadian, they are far too polite to refuse them when offered.

Not necessarily. They’ve tried to think outside the box with RD – who said lots of buzz words in his interview and has good connections in the game.

Any future appointment would likely to be a more experienced, familiar face IMO – given that the Deila experiment has failed so far(not entirely his own fault, but ultimately his own weakness casts him in the role of yes man and undermines him), they’d be extracting the you know what if another inexperienced unknown was handed the reigns.

Theres a few ex-Celts who would be good candidates and understand the expectations but I

Can you imagine the pelters the manager would have taken for leaving a cb on the bench and moving a midfield player to ch por cierto.

  21. One of the problems with the ‘enforced’ substitution was the speed with which it was made, especially for the BBC who thought it was wrong that Celtic could make it before the penalty was taken.

  22. Remember the people “at the top” where also there when we qualified for the last 16 of the CL 3 times, and the last 4 Championships, I’m not defending them just seems a bit lop sided to only mention the failures all the time por cierto

  23. Toor a Loo…05.30 pm……..think Bob Crampsey was the head at St Ambrose Coatbridge around a bout that time…………. Tiger Tim always said good things about Celtic on his show..

  24. Have gave up trying to read back, 7 hours time difference means a lot of posts.

What I have read is that ” midfield does not come back to help defence” & “midfield falls back to edge of box meaning we have no out ball”,surely both can’t be right. Maybe Ronny can figure out what they want.

“Sack the board, get rid of PL, get rid of Desmond” OK guys whoever you suggest to get rid of Desmond can you ask for a few bob more to sign Messi ,Iniesta & central defender.

Of course I’m not happy with Sundays result on but we don’t have a god given right to win every game. I have a tough time explaining that to Mrs fess as she always asks ” why Celtic get beat?”.

Asked a Sevco supporter, who had laughed at us losing ” who do you want to win the cup? Hibees or the RC’s” irony seemed to have been lost on him.

    Nite nite Timland.

  25. Sammi was bang average when with us, even his boss at the time joked about it.

He hasn’t gone downhill since leaving Celtic he’s disappeared, so much so that he can’t even get employment.

We should be praised for refusing to bow to his demands when wanting a new contract. Bullet dodged for once.

If we lived life by that maxim they’d have to shut half the Internet down. There seems to be a thing on the Internet that people believe that by talking enough and complaining enough they can actually affect change. And then when all their “effort” is in vain it makes them angry with the people who they imagine are listening. I’m not wise enough to know if it’s a new thing, got more prevalent, or is largely new.
