JENNINGS BACKS EX-CELT
PAT JENNINGS has backed former Celtic keeper Michael McGovern to land a top club in the new season.
The legendary Northern Ireland goalie believes his country’s present No.1 will be snapped up after his performances in the Euro Finals.
McGovern, who was freed by the Hoops in 2008, is up for grabs after coming out of contract at Hamilton at the end of the last campaign.
The 31-year-old shotstopper has already been linked with former Accies boss Alex Neill at Norwich City while Gary Caldwell’s Wigan and other Championship sides Leeds, Bristol City and Alan Stubbs’ Rotherham are also in the chase.
Spurs and Arsenal hero Jennings, who made 119 international appearances, was asked to select his country’s top player in the France finals.
The 71-year-old icon said: “It’s too difficult for me to pick one person out, the team is built on the understanding that everyone works together for the collective cause.
“However, as a former keeper, I would have to say that Michael McGovern’s performance against Germany was sensational.
“He has a big future and I am sure he has had lots of clubs calling since his heroic display in Paris.”
Another ex-Gunners star to be impressed by McGovern was Jens Lehmann who said: “I’ve heard he’s a free agent now – can he speak German?
“I might ask a couple of clubs to take him after his display against Germany.”
McGovern, who also had loan spells at Stranraer and St Johnstone during his Hoops career, moved to Dundee United after quitting Parkhead, but didn’t play a single first team game under Craig Levein.
He joined Ross County in 2009 before moving to Falkirk two years later. Accies landed him in 2014.
