Jeopardy of international travel

252

While we are all feeling confident ahead of the title run-in, things can change quickly, especially with a monitored infectious disease spreading through society.  In little over a week we go to Ibrox, where our hosts are already fretting over the absence of a player who tested positive after flying to Zambia on international duty.

Travel through international airports, on connecting coaches and flights, brings a jeopardy until domestic travel.  With so many players away on international duty and set to return in the days before going to Ibrox, we face a lottery.  There is nothing Celtic can do about this and little the players can do.  It will be a tense few days when they arrive back at Lennoxtown.

  1. Switched over to Colombia – Bolivia just in time to see Liverpool’s Luiz score a stunning goal.

Colombia then hit the bar with Juve’s Cuadrado.

  2. As it stands, Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay would be in Qatar, and Peru would be in the playoff, although Colombia or Chile could catch them in the last game.

  3. AN TEARMANN

If the scores stand, Chile would have to beat Uruguay, hope Paraguay wins at Peru, and that Venezuela beat Colombia.

    Possible, but unlikely.

  4. AN TEARMANN

Just read back, and realized, until you came on, I wiz talkin’ tae masel!

  5. Lads, I’ve had a long day, and it’s just hit me. Looks like all 4 home teams will win here. ( Paraguay 2 up on Ecuador ). Think I’ll hit my cot. Mexico U.S wont be over until 5:00 AM Scotland time, and that would be 17 hours straight of fitba for me. Getting too old for this.

    Nitey night.

  7. Good morning cqn and a happy Friday to you all from the Garngad

Unlucky Scotland last night, the Grandsons first Scotland game with 6 of his pals for his 10th birthday and I thought they were getting a win. No luck the wee mhan.

He will have to settle with his beloved Celtic humping The Rangers and winning the Treble and his own wee team trying to go through the year invincible, 5 games so far no defeats.

Yall have a good day, work beckons, get in early and an early finish to enjoy the sun.

  8. Well, what do you know, during all the so-called dithering over Eddie Howe, the much-maligned Peter Lawwell steps in an brings Ange to Celtic. Is the real reason for the sacking of our “saviour” Dom, now becoming clear?

Peter’s legacy continues to grow even after his departure. We already know that various managers identified & signed all our top players over the last eighteen years, and PL did likewise for all the duds. So does that now mean that Ange is bound to fail?

    Answers on a postcard please.

  9. Two new managers, one on either side of the city. The Ibrox club must receive praise for their Europa Cup exploits, however imagine the accolades GVB would be receiving from the Scottish media if he was in Ange’s position at present. First trophy ‘in the bag’, leading the title-race by three points & superior goal difference, and in the semi-final of the Scottsh Cup……a treble beckoning! The reaction to Ange is still in the lukewarm stages….he probably likes it like that!

What if we do win the treble and *Rangers go out of the EL to Braga? Will GVB then become another Paul Le Guen? The story is unfolding, the hacks have their fingers crossed – we’ll soon know.

  10. You were singing a different tune early Season,

Anyhow glad to see you enjoying the Celts,

Always remember best way to Wangle a League Title is to stay unbeaten for 30 plus games,

Obviously whilst maintaining Context & Perception,

  11. CORKCELT

Tut tut, can you not see that it was all tongue in cheek. In fact, I now realize he is actually a member of GB and votes SNP!

    LOL!

  12. Peter’s legacy continues to grow even after his departure.

Is that tongue in cheek or comedy gold ?

You never see JHB and Paul67 in the same room together. Beginning to make sense now.

  13. At least Dom is leaving due to PL interference

Unlike earlier in the season where it was the existential crisis of child abuse that had the contrarian- Tommy beating his meat and speculating over a topic he knows nothing of.

Tommy keep your sycophancy for your wee Russian funded racist.

  14. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Shame about the young lad Kenny last night.

Long road to recovery for the young man.

Will be frustrating for him of course, but hopefully he’ll come out the other side mentally tougher.

  15. On this day in Celtic’s history – March 25

Here we take the opportunity to revisit some Celtic games and tales from this day in the club’s past.

How did the club fare on this day in the past?

    1893

On Celtic’s first ever game on this day, a trip to Renton proved fruitful as the Celts returned with a 2-0 win and two points in the bag on the way to their first ever title. Michael Mulvey hit both goals in a seven-game winning run for Celtic. Mulvey only played four games for Celtic but managed to also score four goals in recording four wins.

    1933

On this day in 1933, Jimmy McGrory scored one of his many Celtic hat-tricks as the Hoops beat Cowdenbeath 5-1 in an away league match. Surprisingly, that was his only league hat-trick of that season although he did kick-off Celtic’s victorious Scottish Cup run with a triple in a 7-1 away win over Dunfermline. The Hoops’ other goal-getter on this day at Cowdenbeath was Bertie Thomson who helped himself to a brace.

    1964

The Hoops played Clyde on this day in 1964 in the Glasgow Cup final at Celtic Park after already seeing off Partick Thistle and Third Lanark after both ties went to replays of 1-1, 2-1 and 1-1, 3-0 respectively.. The final was more straightforward and a 13,500 crowd saw Celtic win 2-0 thanks to goals from Stevie Chalmers and John Divers .This was Celtic’s fourth successive final of eight consecutive finals, of which they won six – the last five successively.

    1966

Happy 56th birthday to Anton Rogan as the Celt was born on this day in 1966 in Belfast. The left-back joined from Distillery in May 1986 and was a cult hero with the Celtic fans even before he became a first-team regular (for some bizarre reason the Rogan & Roche CSC, named after Anton and another young Irish Celt, Declan Roche, was formed in Southampton while they were still reserve players). He made his debut on January 3, 1987 in an 8-3 win over Hamilton Accies and was to go on and score five goals in 169 appearances for the Celts before moving on to Sunderland in 1991.

    1968

In September 1967, Celtic lost 1-0 to Rangers on the second Saturday of the league season but this 6-1 win over St Johnstone on this day in 1968 was only one of the 32 consecutive unbeaten games by the Hoops that followed that season. Just that solitary league game was lost that season and this particular win came in the midst of a goal-scoring feast by the Celts. During March they beat Kilmarnock (6-0), Aberdeen (4-1), Airdrie (4-0), Falkirk (3-0), Raith Rovers (5-0), St Johnstone (6-1) and Dundee United (5-0) to make it 33-2 for the six games that month. In the visit to Muirton on this day, a crowd of 12,000 saw Bobby Lennox hit four with the other two goals coming from Jimmy Johnstone and Willie Wallace.

    1972

Phil O’Donnell was born on this day in 1972, the same day as Vic Davidson was to score the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over Falkirk at Brockville. Phil himself was to feature in many Celtic victories after he signed from Motherwell in a record £1.75million move in 1994. He scored both Celtic goals in a 2-1 win on his debut against Partick Thistle at Firhill and that was the first of 21 goals in 121 games before he moved on to Sheffield Wednesday in 1999 where he stayed for four years before re-signing with his first professional club in 2004. Tragically, Phil collapsed while playing for Motherwell on December 29, 2007 and was pronounced dead later that evening. On May 25, 2008 a crowd of 60,000 watched a charity match played between his former Hoops and Motherwell team-mates with Celtic winning 5-1

    2004

On this day in 2004, Celtic were in action in the Nou Camp where a 0-0 draw was enough to record an aggregate win over Barcelona in the fourth-round of the UEFA Cup.In the first-leg, an Alan Thompson goal just on the hour-mark was enough to see the Celts go through. In the next round, Celtic lost out to another Spanish side in the shape of Villareal, but the European exit was tempered four day later at Rugby Park when a Stiliyan Petrov goal was all that was needed for a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock and the Celts had clinched their third title in four years.
