Jo Inge Berget in ahead of Legia

715

As always, it’s important to get the players you want, not end up with fourth or fifth choice, so on that measure, I’m happy Ronny Deila has secured a player he knows well. Jo Inge Berget is a wide attacking player, who will fit into the manager’s high-tempo, pressing, style of play.

The deal, a loan which gives Celtic the option to sign the player permanently if he’s successful, places incentives in the right places.

Enjoyed watching the cycling this week? Why don’t you sign up for the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle, which takes place on 6 September. Details here. You’ll enjoy it, and do great things for the Foundation.

Welcome to Celtic, Jo.

On the topic of “playmakers” I honestly think that Ronnie will bring the very best out of Johansen who looks like a playmaker to me.

I appreciate that it was only against Reykjavik, but during the first half at Murrayfiled he fairly pinged a direct forward pass through the middle on a number of occasions for Pukki in particular to run through on and so created chances.

Those were defence splitting passes that needed an eye for the gap and it is not as if the Icelanders were flooding forward, rather they were crowding the defence and midfield so gaps were reasonably narrow.

Ronnie Deila may well look to build a team around Johansen and so look to recruit forwards that are mobile and who will play at a high tempo without the ball.

Pukki was far more mobile last week than I had ever seen him before, and remember that Berget will have played in front of Johansen before so the two will know one another.

I agree that there are other areas needing strengthened but this guy’s reputation is based on building a team as opposed to signing and adapting for individuals.

We can only wait and see how it goes because it is all a new and an unknown quantity to us.

I see Berget as a really interesting development in terms of a signing strategy coming from the manager.

I think if we signed Ronaldo and Messie some on this blog would be under whelmed it seems they just like to moan.Look at Southampton they have sold half there team for 120 million how do there fans feel ? Look at the Rangers signing old men.We are in the CL qualifyers our new manager appears to be one of the promising young European managers we will sign new players before the window closes and they are still not happy. If we don’t progress to the CL group stages, that’s when we will find out who the “real” Celtic Supporters are. We will have to put up with the absolute manure on here, that most farmers would be proud to get for free. The “real” Celtic Supporters will just shrug our shoulders and be happy if we done our best. I guarantee, that will the majority of us. The glory hunters and the interlopers, can GTF. IMHO of course.

TW had his name chanted by our support soon after reaching the top team. No wonder it went to his head

  11. I’m seeing various conspiracy theories about Tony’s departure, but surely the most logical answer is that the manager didn’t think he was offering a positive contribution to the team?

In Deila’s post-match interview at the weekend, he spoke about Tony’s attempt to take the ball for the penalty:

‘It was not a good situation that Tony’s tried to take it from him, because it takes energy and focus away from Bahrudin.’

It wasn’t a rant, but it wasn’t the first time Deila appeared to question his professionalism.

I think there’s also a place for Biton in our midfield as the more solid midfielder in front of the defence while Stefan moves around and pings a few passes, I like the look of the big man and someone said earlier we need an enforcer, look no further Big Nir will mix it with the best of them and he can pass the ball.

Really looking forward to the Legia game..

  16. Another NorWegian joinging the Green GlasWegians?

I think I know the plan.

Norway comes just below Scotland in the total average as percentage of population stakes.

    Cyprus 4.8%

    Iceland 4.4%

    Scotland 3.9%

    Norway 3.7%

    BUT

in the Biggest Couch Potatoes table that is the percentage rating for soccer as percentage of households with TV sets then

Norway with 11.9% comes second only to Croatia 12.4%

(Scotland is rolled into the UK – no Independence questions please)

which suggests Celtic are trying to punt Celtic TV in Norway, and if they are not, they bloody well should be.

Yes fair point re those who you named and who came on loan.

However, some of those were kinda last minute team sheet fillers. I don’t get that feeling here as this manager has played the guy before and obviously we have made quiet enquiries relatively early and secured his services on loan with a buy option.

That strikes me as a sensible way to buy and a sensible piece of business as the manager knows exactly what he is getting. He is not relying on video clips, reports from others and so on.

I am not out of my seat jumping for joy but I do find it interesting.

  20. AH @ 19.48 / Debt levels

I think you may need to take another look at the debt levels you have published.

From memory / Q+D at best

2002 / 03 — My memory is that we generated ÂŁ2mill of +ve cash flow.

The debt reduced ÂŁ2mill to ÂŁ15.8mill after the run to Seville.

We had a poor 2003/04 with merchandising taking a big hit.

That put the debt up to ÂŁ19.5mill on the 30th June 2004.

Then we had the 2004/05 shambles and the bank interview without coffee.

You know when the Irish Raj was forced to put his hand in his pocket.

Regarding your original questions regarding debt levels — DD and his EPL ambitions are to blame.

FMcC ran a tight ship and we were very close to debt free when he left in 1999.

Then came the DD inspired KD splurge that was close to being criminal.

Then we had the MON “money no object / just get us an EPL invitation” spendathon.

At least DD put his hand in his pocket to sort things out and get his friends on the share register but the FMcC “tight ship” was well and truly sunk.

  21. mention of Southampton, a club I’ve kinda liked since the days of Laurie McM, a lot of strange things happening at that club lately. Promotion to the Promised Land, a successful run and then the owners sell half the team. The mind boggles.

    Jungle jim,

In answer to your question, Celtic said nothing, but various newspapers all had same story about him being out of favour with NL and the guy in Belgium, and the inferences laid all the blame on the exit at a 20 year old’s door.

In my book, his misdemeanours ( if there were any) for a 20 year old were relatively trivial

    Draw your own conclusions .

IF Tony Watt goes on and fulfills his potential that will be brilliant.

I would have loved him to do it wearing the hoops but that chance has gone now.

IF Tony Watt ends up back in Scotland playing for Airdrie again, that will be a waste.

Neither of them will be surprising.

    Kinda feels like a 50-50.

  25. the glorious balance sheet on

A strange signing in my view given recent comments from the manager.

Last week Ronny Deila told the press:- “Loan deals are a possibility but they are not ideal. You don’t want to develop other clubs’ talent and not get any money for it. The important thing is to get someone who will make the team much better. So it could be older players who there is no future value in but who can use their experience and skills to help us. So that’s another opportunity.”

    http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/spfl/ronny-deila-places-faith-in-current-celtic-players-1-3483816

So 7 days ago Ronny Deila was dead against signing players on loan, but said he might make an exception for older players with skills and experience.

A week later we sign a 23-year-old forward on loan whose career to date has returned 36 goals from 146 appearances in Norwegian league football (plus 0 goals from 2 appearances for a rank rotten shot-shy Cardiff City side). If this is someone who can make us “much better” then we are in a worse state than I thought.

Why are we getting involved in signings that the new manager has stated are “not ideal”? Are we really that strapped for cash?

I have no contention with what you posted. My argument is, I pay ÂŁ1000 plus to Celtic for the honour of being a Supporter, with ST, merchandise, catering and peripheral other costs like Celtic TV. I have no problem with distant “fans”. My argument is, we are the Supporters who keep the Club in the financial position we are in, and it pees me off that there are some on here, not including distant supporters who, for instance, contribute in other ways, eg, Celtic TV and merchandise, who seem to think they can run my club better than the people we have in charge at the moment. THEY are the “experts” I am getting at. I wouldn’t trust any one of them to organise a raffle.
