Job done by those who wanted illicit chanting confrontation

Make what you wish of Strathclyde Police reporting Celtic fans for “illicit chanting” to a Uefa match observer in October, the bottom line is that Uefa have fined Celtic €15,000 (around £12,700), established a benchmark for future action and more importantly sullied the club’s reputation.

  1. As an exile I’ve watched with a degree of jealousy the re-creation of a semi independent Scottish state, freedom from Westminster and therefore conservative control was something we could only dream of back in the 80’s and like many others I have been impressed by the choices the Holyrood government have made, they appear on the surface to be more socially aware, more by and for the people than those in power down here, but, and its a bigger but than my ex-wifes, my mother always hated the SNP, always said they were “agin us”, I think I can see what she meant

What Alex Salmond doesnt realise is that he has to carry 70% of the populace to gain his cherished position of full nationhood, and privately he has just alienated a large part of almost half the country’s population, in playing the sectarian card the SNP, from a distance seem to be trying to create a piece of legislation singularly aimed at criminalising, for mostly trivial reasons, scotlands youth

If this pernicious legislation is as it seems and worries a significant number of both catholics and the youth it will prove to be the biggest own goal ever scored for it will guarantee that what the SNP wants most will slip through their fingers like sand

Religion has no place in football, whether on the terraces or the statute book

  2. I have said previously that I would rather songs regarding physical force republicanism were not song at Celtic Park. However, I will indulge in a little whataboutery, as it seems to be the order of the day, it is infuriating in the extreme that we and other clubs are forced to remember the likes of the scum below.

The biggest can of worms will only be truly opened if the board go completely public with this whole thing.

Sure, come out and say to the fans ‘look,we got fined so no more add ons’,fine, no problem.

But equally tell us just what add ons/songs they EXACTLY are, and most importantly ask bloody questions about every other political songs being sung in Europe.

    – > re the “hate data” that was apparently destroyed…….

What I don’t understand is that this data is clearly still available. It relates to recorded crimes, convictions etc. it might be a hassle, but the police, fiscal’s service, SCRO etc should easily be able to retrieve the data again — simply by going through all crimes for the given period, and checking how many were flagged as motivated by sectarianism, or carried a religious aggravation (such as an aggravated Breach of the Peace). The crimes all took place, and are all recorded – therefore the data cannot be ‘destroyed’ without the crimes themselves being wiped off the records!

Anyway i asked him about the game etc and he then asked if i had a car so i gave him a lift up home and b4 he left the car he shook my hand and said fk the pope so there you are guys if we think this new bill etc is a good thing with coppers saying that then we are doomed.

Can you guys honestly see guys like this at ibrox reporting any singing about pope fenians etc not a chance.

As i said earlier let the games begin because this is only the beginning,

New date for Celtic’s Youth Cup tie

By: Mark Henderson on 12 Dec, 2011 11:53

CELTIC Under-19s’ Youth Cup fourth round clash with Dunfermline has been rearranged for this Wednesday, December 14, with a 12.30pm kick-off.

Sunday’s meeting of the sides at Lennoxtown had been postponed because of the wintry weather.

The young Hoops made an impressive start in their defence of the trophy with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Kilmarnock in the previous round in November.

Aberdeen await the winners of the Celtic v Dunfermline tie in the next round.

Celtic will also face a derby match this weekend, with their league game against Rangers at Murray Park scheduled for Saturday, December 17 (KO: 1pm).

  10. The songs debate has the ability to divide us. The reason for that potential division is the very fabric that makes the Celtic support so great – the diverse, all inclusive nature of this wonderful football club.

We will have those who recognise that continuing with certain songs will see the club head for closed door European matches in the fullness of time.

We will have those who wish to preserve the right to be political and everything that entails in our Irish history and heritage.

And there will be 4o shades of green in between.

You know what? Every single one of us will be right.

That’s why we, as a support, needs to be smarter than the average supporter. The Green Brigade have shown the way with this and have largely responded to Victorian police methods with a maturity that defies their “media persona” – banners and messages, rallies and protests, letters and emails and – most importantly – the ability to have a flexible song choice.

Keep Celtic as our first and only priority and watch us adapt and modify with effortless ease. Let’s not fall to the easiest tactic of all and divide – the Celtic support are magnificent in adversity. We can render them impotent with a unity and imagination.

No division, no confrontation, just Celtic. Lead the way bhoys – the Green Brigade can lead this and the stadium will follow. Keep on the right path bhoys.

So let me get this straight in my head.

The match commander decided to inform uefa that the support were singing illicit songs/chants.

We as a club had no representation at the trial and it was a trial, we as a club have no idea what we have been found guilty of, and have been fined 15k.

So what is to stop the next match commander reporting the club whenever they please to uefa ? meanwhile racking up trumped up charges against the club.

Unless the club sort this we could well be having regular trips to the kangaroo court that is uefa.

Or as some are suggesting, maybe the club are indeed complicit, whatever, the signs for the future don’t look promising, and as ever our support will be the whipping bhoys.

Is Eddie Smith not the brother-in-law of Phil O’Donnell, if so then shame on him.

If this is true then this is a sad day but as i said earlier in my eyes he will never be one of us he has sold his soul to the devil.

I will come back to this, why goto UEFA when he must report to club and how the club couldn’t use this in their argument means to me they wanted this verdict.

  19. The Ghood will prevail on

A horrible decision by uefa, and a sad day for our club.

I’ve been one on here posting about ‘ra songs/add ons before, about how I want them to stop, but for us to be reported by a polis and fined by uefa over this is terribly unfair. This police force has stood by for generations and allowed the huns to sing whatever hate-filled bile they wish. No one even seems to know what was sung by our fans – it must have been very few people indeed. Yet I was racially abused for 120 minutes at the league cup final and the chief constable came out and PRAISED the hun fans, as did the justice secretary.

It feels as though we have been done up like kippers here. Plenty of people seem in on the act, such as the officials who ‘lost’ the sectarian crime data, and that reptile nevin who is strangely deaf to hun hatred.

Just a thought: i know ‘whataboutery’ is regularly deplored on here, but a friend of mine was at the last but one el classico, the charity shield thingy at camp nou. He said that the racial abuse towards a black Real Madrid player was astonishing. I’m talking monkey noises and I’m talking men, women and chilren – tens of thousands of them – involved. Yet no action is ever taken (of course uber-cool barca can do no wrong). Although I dislike pira chants, I accept that they are political, certainly not in the same stratosphere of offensiveness as racism or sectarianism. What is going on at Uefa?

As for the offensive behaviour bill; I used to be a card-carrying member of the SNP. I don’t think I’ll be voting for them again. Somehow the prospect of an independent scotland is starting to give me a chill up my spine. I’m starting to realise why my late father and uncles were so faithful to Labour.

    This is all Samaras’ fault.

The Celtic Symphony was not heard at Celtic games in donkey’s years until Samaras signed and fans were giving it ‘Oohh Ah Samaras’ which then led to a bright spark thinking ‘hey, lets sing that other song that sounds like that and ended it with Oohh Ah Up the Ra instead Samaras.

However, all would have been well had Samaras been consistently good because they would have kept singing ‘Ooohh Ah Samaras’ instead of ‘Up The RA’.

(Of course some of this is tongue in cheek but I distinctly remember the song being resurrected after he signed and there is something in what I say…… )

Sorry for the what-aboutery here BUT if it turns out it was the letters IRA or ‘RA that got us in trouble then we really need to see some consistency. YCV (Young citizen volunteers) is sung almost every game by the Orcish hoardes – the song which contains these letters also encourages the taking up of arms – something none of our own repertoire does. Doesn’t particularly offend me but it seems ‘illicit’ in the context of the punishment we have received.

Still, it all gives our chums on the talk ins something to talk about and those who wish to be outraged by it something to listen to.

As for me I’m still a Celtic supporting, Republican sympathising lefty who no longer sings many of ‘the tunes’ anywhere – football or not. There are more pertinent rebel songs to be singing.

That said I hope Celtic appeal it and I hope they give us all a clear indication of what the chants were. Otherwise how can we move on?

They fulfill a judicial function but do so in an administrative manner.

Complicated matters are decided in a matter of minutes without interpreters available to translate proceedings into the first language of committee members.

I understand that Celtic weren’t allowed to attend the hearing. I don’t know how whether they were permitted to make written representation. We’ve never been told how specific the charges were.

I’m telling you now lads this was a set up and the ones who were in on it was Salmond,Corrigan. They need to enhance this bill as proof to show we need new legislation.

Eddie Smith was the yes man and if the celtic support think this is the end of it then they have another thing coming and that is a guarantee.

Why would you go straight to UEFA when you must speak to club 1st.

IRA must go but believe me offensive singing will be next and there will be other songs they want out because remember anyone who is offended will make a complaint.

If anyone on here think celtic will appeal this then they are wrong, Mr Lawell sad at AGM we will get rid of these songs.

Its a corrupt country we live in and everytime there is bad news for huns they try to create bad news towards us so they don’t need the topic to be all about huns and clyde is a great example in this.

Last year we spanked them in every game leading upto the shame game and all calls were about us wnning and what happens the next night they come out and parade mccoist and say hes the manager.

Next agenda was taxcase and what happens, they bring out kayal ducking and the green brigade focus and now this.

If we all remember the media etc started to pick on the green brigade for no reason and all of a sudden they mention the IRA songs and they tried to paint the green brigade in a bad light and then this.

This was a set up of the highest order and its time to start thinking boys the way forward because if we dont they are going to try to damage us and that aint a joke.

I was all for this boycott and we backed out, the huns heartz and another few teams are in dire financial states and this is the best time to strike.

If they want to mess us about then its time we stopped talking and act.

I would also say if huns goto admin and are formed as a newco then this will be our most powerful weapon to use against them and the establishment.

Another question that has to be asked is why does the media keep saying sectarian, this country is a joke and shame on anyone who voted salmond into power.

Eddie Smith you are a joke of a man like keevins and co and will do anything to enhance your career and in my eyes you are a despicable hun.

The 15K EUR fine…. what chanting was taking place, and what made it ‘illicit’?

That is a serious question…. the whole thing seemed very un-transparent, and I would really like to know which chant the police are talking about. (As clearly it will have to be avoided in future).

I suspect the chanting was in no way sectarian 8as this would doubtless have been mentioned) so probably points to support for a terrorist organisation. If the IRA is the ‘terrorist organisation’ in question (and I am speculating here) then we should be aware that this is the benchmark, and anything of this nature is unacceptable.

The Club will be well within their rights however, to contact the SFA, and ask what action will be taken against the ‘illicit’ chanting from the rangers fans on Saturday, in support of the YCV – the youth wing of the UVF. I am sure that despite it not being a UEFA fixture, the police are still bound to act, and clearly there has been a legal precedent set today with Celtic’s fine.

I am wary of banning political chanting, as I feel it impinges on free speech. however, it is FAR easier for Celtic fans to stop it than it is for the Huns, for whom their club was compelled to issue a list of approved songs which was so limited in its scope, it included something called Wolverhampton Town…… a song not heard since the 1950s.

Why stand by and take this? – if the police want to flag ‘illicit’ chanting – (not illegal… not sectarian…) then let’s make sure that this policy is applied consistently.

Make no mistake about it. Strathclyde Police are institutionally biased against the Celtic support, particularly those among us who wish to sing political songs. Therefore these songs have to stop being sung in any ground where we are playing. The stakes are too high to continue to chant about our heritage.

I’m not saying we should ever forget our heritage, just leave it at the turnstiles and pick it up again when leaving the stadium.

“As I pointed out earlier, the real issue is why did Eddie Smith, whose hardly giro level wages we pay, not order his men to deal there and then with what he perceived as being an offence? Someone at Celtic should be raisin this with Smith’s boss. After all the club pay sweet for police services on match day”.

Have to disagree – the real point is that Celtic FC have been fined by UEFA, so it’s official ones as bad as the other.

That’s how it will be viewed – all those ghuys who wrote articulate and well constructed letters about the BBC’s comments on Cup final day and persisted in repudiated the claims have come to nought.

The fact that they found a Catholic Copper prepared to do the reporting and the UEFA to enforce the punishment it means any cries of bias will be rejected

Incongruously, from the CQN book club link to Amazon, one can purchase a wide range of music featuring ‘illicit’ lyrics similar in style and content to those apparently now sanctionable in Scotland, together with an extensive range of official UEFA merchandise.

The goods in question will thereafter be dispatched from the Amazon facility in Dunfermline, officially opened only last month by none other than Mr Alex Salmond.

If the club make a statement i don’t think they will name any specific song as this will make the headline. i.e they are not going to make ref to ooh ah up the ra.

What I would want them to ask is, how many fans were involved? A few hundred? Is the fine proportionate and commensurate with the numbers involved? If we applied the fine to the fans how much would it be per head?

The fine seems unfair and I expected a warning.

Interesting times in Europe. How do the SNP see themselves if Cameron gets his way? have the SNP decided that they don’t need the Catholic vote in Scotland? They have certainly turned the Catholic church against them and now there is a direct link to the equivalence legislation in a sporting sense.

Folk don’t care as much about the church but an attack on Celtic as brazen as this will see a shift in those who still think the SNP are the way ahead.

The SNP could have made significant moves in a few labour strongholds. Seems their calculations tell them they need to induce the hun vote.

As an exile I’ve watched with a degree of jealousy the re-creation of a semi independent Scottish state, freedom from Westminster and therefore conservative control was something we could only dream of back in the 80′s and like many others I have been impressed by the choices the Holyrood government have made, they appear on the surface to be more socially aware, more by and for the people than those in power down here, but, and its a bigger but than my ex-wifes, my mother always hated the SNP, always said they were “agin us”, I think I can see what she meant

  21. In a speech to the SNP’s party conference in Inverness recently Kenny MacAskill shamelessly attempted to justify the new Bill by invoking the grief of Nuala Kerr, the mother of PC Ronan Kerr murdered by a terrorist bomb in Northern Ireland.

Now I may be missing something here, but at the so called “shame game” that triggered this new Bill, 3 football players were sent off and officials of Rangers and Celtic argued in the dug-out.

The connection between a Scottish, a Senegalese, and an Algerian footballer being red-carded at a football match in Glasgow; and a bomb explosion under the car of an Irish policeman in a housing estate in Armagh escapes me.

But Mr MacAskill claims there is. And he knows he is on a vote-winner if he drags the I.R.A. into this new Bill.

Step forward Eddie Smith of Strathclyde Police and give the SNP government a real boost…just days before the Bill goes through parliament. Job done.

What about the tens of thousands of Rangers fans who for years have belted out their racist and sectarian bile and praise the UDA and UVF like they did at the CIS Cup Final?

That was a great advert for football according to MacAskill and Eddie Smith’s boss Campbell Corrigan. Nothing to see here Timmy just move along!

This judgement will just reinforce that impression out there in the wider world.

We need a dedicated PR department to counter this nonsense at every turn and make sure that the next ‘offence’ isn’t deemed to be the singing of the Irish national anthem, the flying of the tricolour or any other anti-Irish, anti-Celtic theme they choose to outlaw.

Meanwhile, supporters should heed the club’s appeals until such a department is established.

What a set up. We showed up McAskill after league cup final. This is payback. The FIFA supporters of the year not long ago mind. We are being bullied on all fronts now. I’ve had a SB for as long as I remember but if our board don’t help us here then I’m out. The treatment of our fans is despicable and as a customer I have choices. I understand the downsizing to a point but I don’t understand why any of us should put up with this crap. And this is only the start. I couldn’t walk in to the stadium in the knowledge PL etc have allowed this to happen to us. Mr. Kelly would bring Gaelic games to the Park. Very very sad day. HH.

    Correct again matey..

‘Is Eddie Smith not the brother-in-law of Phil O’Donnell, if so then shame on him.’

More pertinently Eddie Smith is a former referee who took part in the referees’ ‘strike’ which was held in protest at Celtic questioning their behaviour.

No conflict of interest there then.

    None at all.
