Job done by those who wanted illicit chanting confrontation

1049

Make what you wish of Strathclyde Police reporting Celtic fans for “illicit chanting” to a Uefa match observer in October, the bottom line is that Uefa have fined Celtic €15,000 (around £12,700), established a benchmark for future action and more importantly sullied the club’s reputation.

Job done by those who wanted this confrontation to happen.

  1. The club will now have to tell fans what can’t be sung. Any type of IRA songs will always be offensive to some.

For a club with the size of song repertoire we have we walked into this one with our eyes wide open.

Today I’m disappointed that my club’s name is in the press for the wrong reasons.

  2. celtic40me,

I would wait until we had some clarificiation of what the “illicit” chanting actually was before the Club took action against any of the support. I write this as one who has regularly called for folk not to sing pro-IRA stuff and as one who was at the match in question. I was amazed that there was any “illicit” chanting that evening. Mind you, I’m not a mind reader and I don’t know (as they won’t say) what our police force deems as “illicit”. It maybe that what is still not currently illegal in Scotland, such as political chanting, may be deemed such by UEFA.

  3. The Celtic faithfull are being stitched up big time, step forward Alex Salmond and the SNP.

Uefa have also been stitched up imho.the match delegate was ex-hun.

Eddie Smith the swine that he is was probably asked if he would put his neck on the line, and as all swine do he agreed.

Our board by their silence in this matter are also part of the stitch up.

Disgusted by what is going on at the moment, Joe over at the CSA will have to step up to the plate here as we don’t have any body else.

Keep away from away games, stuff the SPL.

What a disappointing day. I’d hope the fine night make a few people stop and think what they have done to our club. I’ll be writing to demand the club take action against whoever was responsible.

And do you think it will stop at this…

You just have to look at the tricolour incident years ago.

No one want’s IRA chanting but if people on here think it ends here is wrong and if you havent read Big Nan’s article then go read it and see how corrupt this country is to get what they wan’t.

  5. harryhoodsdugbitme on

CelticBob – It’s a sad day. It seems it’s entirely open to interpretation just what and what isn’t illicit chanting. Leadership from our board would be nice. Clarification on songs would be great too. But let’s cut to the chase. The right wing SNP and their police lackeys are hand in glove here and sticking it right up us. thatcher must be sitting in her bath chair in her pash with a twisted smile on her old rotten face. I bet she can’t believe her luck. We are now ‘enjoying’ an extremist right wing Scottish government doing her bidding to the beat of the national Scottish police force band. God help us all. HH.

Clyde say Celtic say no info provided by UEFA and they will wait until it has. They can make the point to UEFA that we need to know what attracted the fine in order to tell the support what to avoid. UEFA will have to give this info.

  7. If this decision is not overturned on appeal, I believe we should return the supporters award that we received from UEFA.

Celtic supporters should stop singing Up the Ra and instead sing Up the ANC – I think that would make the point. See if the SNP and the polis object to that.

  8. The Battered Bunnet on

Have we actually just been fined by UEFA because the Police made a complaint? Is that it? Police Complaint = fine. Details of the complaint are little more than a technicality?

UEFA have today announced a fine of 15,000 euros against Celtic for ´illicit´ chanting at the recent UEFA Europa League tie against Rennes at Celtic Park.

A Celtic spokesperson said: “We received notification of the fine this afternoon with no detail. The Club is currently considering its position.”

  11. Ok serious question here, can anyone please explain why the oo were granted permission to walk our streets at the weekend, while we find ourselves in the dock on a made up charge?

    Bamboozledyoubetterbelievecsc

  12. Auldheid

Surely someone at Celtic knew what the precise charge was in the first instance i.e. what is illicit?

Did Celtic just guess like the rest of us, it must have been Ooh Aah or more ridiculously, Paddy McCourt’s.

What a shambles, and the guilty verdict IMO supports posters who originally said, why no communication? otherwise we are

saying Celtic are still in the dark, but guilty none the less.

  13. God almighty, not long until peter lawell gets the blame, exactly what does he stand to gain from todays fine

Starter for one. Mr Edward Smith of Strathclyde Police.

Bloody furious tonight at this nonsense and also by the bland statement issued by the board.

The double standards at play in Scotland are appalling and I am disgusted.

SNP are finished as far as I am concerned; they need ever canvas my door again because they are wasting their time.

As my late father always called them SNP and the P was not for Party. As ever my father was correct.

  16. Strathclyde Police must have been concerned that the mention of the ‘RA’ in song was grossly offensive to the good people of France.

Just checked that out on Twitter. The scottish police have tweeted TWENTY ONE headlines about Celtic involved in Illicit chanting in the last 12 hours, looks like they are in a frenzy about illicit chants.

Murders and serious assaults hardly get a mention, there is only one headline they are interested in.

  19. Its a wonder Spains, Italys and most Eastern European countries in particular Russias own police force arent as noble as Scotlands.

You really have to take your hat off to them.

I mean, coming from a small country off playing with and against the big boys of Europe and putting patriotism and your own nationalism and pride in your country second for the greater good.

It would nearly bring a tear to a glass eye.

Id like Strathclyde Police to now assume control of the UN Nation and take charge of all like minded organisations who can only strive for world peace.

p.s. dont mention the word Rangers.

  20. This “scottishpolice” twitter thing is a disgrace. They are abusing this facility for propaganda, hardly becoming of a police force.

I’d like to see the Catholic Church taking more of a stance here. The attacks are on Celtic as we are viewed as one of the most vocal representations of the Catholic and Irish communities in Scotland. The attacks on Celtic in themselves are criminial as we all this is police time being wasted which should be more wisely invested in religious-hatred motivated assaults and indeed murder.

The SNP embraced the support of the OO. Says it all.

The Catholic community who are not involved with Celtic will be oblivious to the sectarian assaults, vandalism and indeed murders that are taking place due to the determination to keep this quiet – an agenda which benefits the SNP and Strathclyde’s finest. They need to be advised and involved.

Irish racism is also an issue of course and it would be helpful to see the Irish government take more of an interest in the racist abuse of its diaspora here, the like of which is not seen anywhere else in the world, other than the Six Counties, and Scotland.

We have a very worrying future ahead of us. It really is like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Against my better judgement checked both Real Radio and Shortbread Radio hun, I am glad to say that Celtic support staying away from these conduits of anti Celtic meejaa. They are struggling to discuss what they would love to call our problems.

Stay away and lets see if Celtic FC appeal the decision given that in context the ‘illicit’ chants, were at a very low level, if they existed at all, and that the reporter of same was structurally biased in looking for the fault. Indeed who instructed same reporter to closely examine the otherwise sound behaviour of the Celtic fans, including GB.

Well, it had to happen and of course they ‘are’ out to get us. Hasn’t it always been thus?

But to those who insist on singing add-ons with the chants of RA or IRA you have what you wanted.

Unfortunately the next step will be deduction of points in the league.

I am wondering just how many out of a crowd of 60,000 support the singing/chanting of RA/IRA?

You dont speak for me that is for sure.

Not a peep anywhere. Tragically, it is this kind of intense celebration of hatred that leads to violence on the streets. That makes it all the more disgusting that this has been as much encourgaged by the establishment never mind ignored.

    1. illicit – contrary to accepted morality (especially sexual morality) or convention; “an illicit association with his secretary”

    2. illicit – contrary to or forbidden by law; “an illegitimate seizure of power”; “illicit trade”; “an outlaw strike”; “unlawful measures”

No law was broken by the alleged chanting. (I say alleged because I didn’ hear anything unlawful. That said, we have not been told what we were to be listening for.)

Have UEFA taken a view on who was the morally correct party in the NI troubles? If so, why didn’t they step in in 1969 and just tell the uppity catholics to accept their lot? It is because the haven’t and they have been misled by those advising them (I would assume Strathclyde Police).

For the avoidance of doubt, I am no supporter of the IRA nor of any armed organisation (including any army). I am just pointing out that out guilty verdict is untenable by objective means.

Section 1(e) of the current proposed legislation is contrary to the EU bill of Human Rights. However it won’t be changed until severl folk are wrongly imprisoned and one guys get his appeal to the EU courts.

    It is wrong.
