Joe Baker, Hargreaves, Fraser, playing to the galleries

908

Neil Lennon’s suggestion that fostering Fraser Forster from a lower-league loaner to an England international is “one of the best things [he’s] been involved with as a manager” is difficult to dispute, despite his various trophies and Champions League exploits.

Owen Hargreaves earned an England cap before he made an appearance in either of England’s top two divisions, although he was playing with European champions, Bayern Munich at the time.  Hargreaves and Lanarkshire’s Joe Baker are the only two to have been capped for England without playing in any of the country’s four leagues.  I’ve no idea if there are any others to have earned a cap without having played in the top two division but there must be precious few.

In short, Fraser’s appearance between the sticks on Friday was exceptional.  We can now help fulfil the international ambitions of English players, just as long as we continue to compete in the Champions League.

Playing to the galleries

There’s a great line in the movie, Wall St, when Martin Sheen says, “If you live long enough you get to see everything”.  Today we got to see the incredible sight of Craig Whyte’s former PR, who represented him before and during his Outstanding Contribution to Scotland, who in fact, represented him well before this, when Whyte was stalking STV as they teetered on the brink of oblivion, use Twitter to turn on another member of the Whyte coterie, for being a part of the Whyte coterie.

It reads like playing to the gallery, which the Daily Record, is a particularly useful punch bag for.  No one cares what you say about the Daily Record, so exploit a common enemy and pile on.  Tub thumping like this is embarrassing.

Puppet master

It will be interesting to see if the Record investigate who first suggested Whyte turned his attention to Rangers, after his STV ambitions ended….

There are several benefits to listening to vinyl, playing the original product – crackles and all – is a brilliant experience.

It’s a great way of rekindling some fantastic memories as well.

And it is good exercise getting up to change the ole record.

Strongly agree! In fact, I had a funny wee experience at the weekend. I was looking a photo of the Dutch Embassy protesters posted on the CQN Facebook page when I noticed a face I recognised. One of me old muckers from Coatbridge. We used to drink in The Galleria. Hadn’t seen him for years. Anyway – thanks to the power of the internet we are in touch again after a number of years adrift. After we’d exchanged a couple messages it brough back some musical memories – so off I went to put No More Heroes on the record player. My original purchased from Mr. Jamieson’s record shop in the Main Street – still has the price of £3.49 pencilled in the inside cover. :-)

Great LP to test drive the new player! “Isis” is one of my favourites but TBH there’s no bad track on that one.

Aye mate there is no bad track on that one and Isis is probably my fav too. It must be 25 years since I last played that album via a turntable and it still sounds good.

Flight arrives 7:15pm on the Tuesday evening. TET/ acgr (+Stevie) arrive earlier – believe TET is arranging to meet with you that afternoon.

Think the plan is for them to rendezvous with me at the airport bus terminus (somewhere at the top of La Rambla) circa 8:00pm.

Likely to be on the Rioja but my arm can be twisted to partake of a G&T. :-)

Hopefully can persuade my older brother to come along as don’t want to be timmy no mate on the night.

Anyway back to reading my early xmas pressie the CQN annual. Again can I just say well done to all involved, layout is exceptional and so professionally put together.

The Annual will also be available at ALL Celtic stores and is also selling well at Calton Books and Timland in Barrowlands. So it is getting out there beyond the CQN blog – ie spreading the word!

Been a busy afternoon so just catching up with the blog.

From what I can see someone has said that there are a lot of pretty girls in Mozambique and that Hebcelt is now going to start posting these out instead of Hebridean Black Puddings!

    Have I got that right?

If so can I just point out that you definitely need a licence for that sort of thing– but I dare say such a present will be a nice thing to find in the Christmas Stockings.

  18. Re Black Pudding.

I was dining in a posh Edinburgh hotel. One of the special starters was a black pudding and haggis stack with a drambuie sauce! A couple of visiting american matrons at next table asked the waitress what that was. Instead of trying to ‘sell’ it as a Scottish delicacy the waitress just blurted out that they probably would not like it as the black pudding was made from pigs blood and the haggis was made from sheeps stomach! I had it, and it was great, so made a point of announcing that in the Americans’ earshot

Waterstones in EK stocked Phil’s “Downfall” book, placing it boldly in the shop window despite protests from EK Orcs. Don’t know if the manager is a Tim or just a businessman working out that the died team are unlikely to have any books published about them in the near future.

  21. First time poster here but have over the last few months read so many entertaining, opinionated and knowledgeable posts that are written with emotion, good humour and humility. I may add I am one of us by the very fact I can recognise humility and humour!!

A recent poster mentioned CQN Awards as part of the anniversary celebrations. It got me thinking of categories that CQNers could be nominated for. What has struck me (my opinion, of course) is that these posts, in the style and manner they are written, may often display the characteristics of many of the posters. Although many of you have met each other in the flesh it would be interesting and maybe even amusing on who you would nominate for the following categories. This list is by no means exhaustive and I’m sure many of you could add funnier and more pertinent ones.

With amount of charitable activities and good causes undertaken by many on this site there will be many categories that could be considered for real. The ones below are just a bit of fun

    The categories are:-

    What CQNer………..

Despises Rancid FC (another name for the list) more than anyone on the blog

    Employs a butler

Has never kicked a ball in his/her life at any level yet you wouldn’t think so going by his/her posts

Takes a paragraph to make a point where a sentence would suffice.

Believes the MSM are neutral and give impartial coverage to all things Celtic

But it came to Bannockburn, we don’t live in Stirling despite the hostile takeover by the City a couple of years ago. You missed it from the list that’s all.

It looks great. I know BRTH asked for a critique, but other than saying the models used from pages 106 to 109 must have been expensive, high end ghuys. So you shouldn’t waste money like that!

The magazine looks great, the articles are interesting, it’s going with me to Germany this week and on the train to London next to keep me entertained.

Edinburgh is a strange place best avoided.

The original settlers built a big Castle with a great big wall to keep most Edinburgh folk out and for some reason they fire a great big gun to let you know the time instead of having a town clock.

Pretty much summed the place up.

I live in auld reekie and it times in the summer it’s OK but in the winter it is a depressing place to live.

It’s very expensive and is geared more to tourists than locals.
