Johnston, CCV and ‘Poch’

108

There were so many stand-out performances for Celtic last weekend that they are easy to overlook.  Daizen Maeda, Paulo Bernardo, Kyogo, Nicolas Khun, Liam Scales, both full backs and Callum McGregor returned outstanding performances.  Kasper Schmeichel even had a late cameo, which he completed without fuss.

Just when you were beginning to feel good about next week’s Champions League opener, Alistair Johnston limped off during Canada’s historic win over the USA, their first on US soil since 1957.  Reports from Canada suggest Alistair was hooked as a precaution, after feeling a tight hamstring, with hopes that he will be fit for Wednesday’s friendly against Mexico.

There is no friendly important enough to risk a player with a tight hamstring.  Brendan Rodgers will hopefully express these views to Alistair, before the game.

Cameron Carter-Vickers was absent for the US, a consequence of the strain he picked up against Newco.  Auston Trusty was an unused substitute for a USA lacklustre side.  I would be quite happy if both continued to be overlooked by whoever takes over from interim manager, Mikey Varas.

Mauricio Pochettino is expected to be appointed to the post this week.  He was at Spurs during Cameron Carter-Vickers development years there, although Cameron never made an appearance for the club.  No harm to Cameron’s international aspirations, but hopefully, ‘Poch’ continues to overlook our defensive MVP.

I did NOT see/read the original Post in which CHAIRMAN accused you of being a ” MULTI MONIKER” , so I am a little late in making any comment about it however…

As my wee Granny used to say ” Their Heid must be UP THE LUM” !

I have NO IDEA why anyone would accuse YOU of such a thing ?

Many/Most of us on here know you to be a valued Poster, and a fine Celtic Gent.

  3. I see that the Republic of Ireland are playing Greece at home this evening and hope, as with Tony Ralston, Adam Idah gets another run-out, the full game if possible. For reasons which defy logic, I wanted Adam in early doors, ideally for pre-season and the mini tour of the USA. He had worked with Brendan, helped us win both the League and the Scottish Cup, and wanted to sign for Celtic. Of course things did not turn out that way, and in the meantime, we sold both Oh and Vata, did not line up any alternatives such as Miovski or Conway and left ourselves with one established central forward in Kyogo. Not the greatest bargaining position, and one which left Norwich calling the shots, even though had the deal fell through they would have been left with an unhappy player and no transfer fee. Meanwhile Idah got little or no game time, and arrived via last minute dot com. True we did not have to play CL qualifiers, but fact is Idah arrived without a good pre-season, and is now playing catch-up, and we still had to play top dollar. That said we know what he brings to the party, could get a good work with Ireland and then back to Glasgow in time for the Hearts game.

Getting a player in early from the Canaries…..that’s for the birds

Clearly the guys running things for Celtic are trying to sabotage the clubs chances of success from what you are suggesting.

If only you were in charge we could have just told Norwich to sell us their asset at a price we were prepared to pay 2 months earlier. Even although their manager wanted to assess the guy. Even although they were going through ownership change negotiations.

These daft executives at Celtic. Clueless obviously.

    Excellent response.

My former business partner owns a pub called Graces which is not too far away from there. There is a need (wrong in this day and age) for vigilance in these desperate (for the right exrtremist) times. Even more so as the media stir it up

  6. Celtic Mac- don’t be having any opinions of your own,toe the party line, and don’t criticise the Board, and don’t be asking questions to certain posters,as they don’t reply, so go and sit at the back of the bus.

Squad looks in reasonable nick. Promising but only that.

Four more days of this purgatory called the international break to go … then we get to see Celtic at home twice in five days.

No mention of sabotage there. Just countering Paul67’s narrative re signing of players. There is no one right way, sometimes it is preferable to get players in early doors, if you do not understand that you are not paying attention. The vast majority of Championship clubs are in financial trouble, Norwich no longer benefit from EPL parachute payments. I would have been quite happy had Celtic walked away from the Idah deal, if we had looked into alternatives, two of which I mentioned. Instead we sold two forwards, one of whom, Vata, Brendan wanted to keep. Idah was their player, who we wanted to sign on the first day of transfer window, we end up signing him on the last, a policy Paul67 lauded. Norwich were and possibly still are looking down a financial coal mine. That’s where the canaries come in handy. Try for once being a bit more objective where decision making processes are concerned. I’ve said it before, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

  11. Just watched Patrik Klymala’s first interview as a Sydney FC player; sounds immensely grounded and likeable.

Puzzling how his career has tottered to a bit of a standstill. Humble, straight talker who candidly admits it’s a bit of a career reset for him.

Let’s hope playing upfront with fellow signee/winger Douglas Costa gets him recovering his scoring touch.

  12. !!bada bing!!

Problem with some posters on here is that they lack objectivity.

Norwich turned down our first or early bid, now either they told us then the price they wanted for Idah, or we didn’t ask, fact is though the club was prepared to sell him then and we had first option for a number of good reasons. We got there in the end of course, but the idea that signing every player on the last day of the transfer window is a good policy well it’s for the birds. As pointed out we would have been left with only Kyogo up front, had Brendan not forced the club to make the deal.

    DillyDallyCSC

  13. I mean, Idah’s here, great start to the season, match fit in time for the start of the champions league.

We even dealt with an injury to Kyogo with no drama

  14. Bada Bing

So you know all these facts ?

As reported on sky sports news.

So they must be facts eh

An agent of a club involved dealing with Celtic etc etc will always be telling the truth. Of course.

  15. Good morning fron a distinctly chilly North Staffs

    Re CL prices

Last season, Newcastle United—a club in a similar situation—charged member fans £60 for Champions League tickets, while season ticket holders paid £55. This season, most Villa members will pay £94 or £97 for a ticket (£79 for equivalent season ticket holders), while Celtic fans can secure a seat for £46 if they buy a four-match bundle. Liverpool fans won’t pay over £61, and Manchester City fans £62.50 for standard seats.

As far as kids prices are concerned- surely primary school kids should be in bed by 9pm on a school night 😉

I am glad we finally got the Adam Idah deal over the line even if it was three months after the Scottish Cup Final, when we wanted to sign him, he wanted to sign for us, and Norwich were prepared to sell him and did. But he is not yet match fit, how could he be, which is why I want him to get good game time for Ireland against Greece later on this evening. And on the bench against Hearts and Slovan Bratislava. Once fully fit, and he will get there, he will prove to be a great asset.

  17. CELTIC MAC on 10TH SEPTEMBER 2024 11:21 AM

It doesn’t matter, it’s not had any effect on our season.

I think 5 weeks is long enough to get him match fit if he’s had a preseason.

I was a bit shocked to see his condition when he first started this season but I don’t think that’s on Celtic.

  18. If Rocco went to secure first team starts with Watford then it’s not happened yet – in 6 possible outings he has come on as a 64th minute sub in 1 game.

I expect it’s more to do with wages.

  19. Buzzing for the next few games.

3 winnable games at home which could set up our season.

Although all 3 are winnable I don’t think we can take any of them for granted.

Hearts were the last team to beat us at Celtic Park. Enough said really.

Slovan have battled hard to be where they are and represent a country which reached last 16 of the euros and were unlucky to not go deeper. They will be really up for this.

Falkirk are having an amazing domestic run taking promotion in their stride. They will bring a huge and animated support too.

Exciting times before trips to Dingwall and Perth and Dortmund and Atalanta. Great times to be a Celtic supporter.

“But he is not yet match fit, how could he be, ”

    —————————

Perhaps by dint of having completed an uninjured pre season for Norwich.

Then being selected to play in their opening competitive game.

Being signed by Celtic and thrown straight into a game just after he arrived.

And finally by appearing for significant game time in 6 matches in the last 4 weeks including the last ROI match.

We are excusing some fairly indifferent form from Adam and imagining there are fitness issues (match or otherwise).

The boy is being played. He has not hit his stride yet but he had games and spells like this last season after he arrived in January. It was not one long list of match wining play and performances. Like everyone else he has good and bad form. Adam will come good; last year we needed him when our fancy footwork/constant movement style did not break down stubborn defences. We use Adam as someone who could make the ball stick and allow midfielders and wingers to play off him and we used Adam as a battering ram for CBs who do not get this treatment from Kyogo.

Adam is valuable to us, precisely because he is not Kyogo and never will be. But if he’s not match fit by now- questions would have to be asked about the abilities of both the Norwich and Celtic and Irish coaching staff who selected him to playing these past 6 matches. Were they all wrong and those of us just watching him play (admittedly to no great effect) able to spot a “match fitness” issue that they couldn’t, having had the benefit of watching him train and play practice games?

Adam will come good and will help us but…… though Kyogo’s price was much less expensive than Adam’s, he is clearly the number one striker….. until Adam hits better form.
