ALISTAIR JOHNSTON’S World Cup dream ended when Canada toppled 3-0 to Morocco in Houston this evening.
The Celtic defender and his team-mates looked in control of the game as they forced play in the first-half in their valiant bid to reach the quarter-finals in Boston on Thursday.
However, they were undone after the interval as their African opponents, who beat Scotland 1-0 in the group stages, turned the tie on its head.
Azzedine Ounahi netted twice with two glorious shots and it was all over for Jesse Marsh’s men.
The first strike arrived just five minutes after the turnaround as the Canadian defence fell asleep at a right-wing free-kick.
The ball was played straight to the unguarded Ounahi lurking on the edge of the box and he fired a sizzling low drive into the bottom left-hand corner.
And he staged an action replay in the 82nd minute to finish off a lightning break by Morocco that sliced through their rivals’ rearguard.
Ounahi was left unmarked again as the ball was played in from the right and this time he blitzed a right-foot effort high into the net from 14 yards.
And the misery was complete when Soufiane Rahimi slid in the killer third deep in stoppage time.
That goal signalled a sad end for Johnston and Co.
