Jota delivers delights

142

In a game full of delights, it was the fourth goal which stole the show.  Jota had tracked back and had to control a loose ball facing his own corner flag.  His first touch brought control and options, transforming a defensive position into a promising counterattack.

That kind of control makes the game look easy, Greg Taylor and Reo Hatate were able to pass out of the corner and progress the ball to Arne Engels.  Arne’s pass around two Dundee players looked anything but easy; it was similar to the pass he made to Daizen Maeda at Fir Park on Sunday, for the third goal.  If anything we see between now and May eclipses this as Goal of the Season, I will be surprised (although an own goal winner against Munich would meet the grade).

The same player collected the ball but this time he chipped the Dundee keeper from the edge of the box.  If this is what we are in for, for the remainder of the season, it could be another memorable May.  13 points clear with 13 games to go, the run-in is underway.

6 is the magic number for Dundee.  A 6-0 defeat last night, 0-6 defeat on Saturday, 6 points from bottom of the table St Johnstone, who have picked up 6 points in their last two games.  Safety from relegation is no longer looking assured.

  1. Maeda is like a new signing. Can’t stop scoring. Headers, chips, tap ins, all types of goals.

Japan’s centre forward at the next World Cup is much more likely to be him rather than Kyogo. Just saying.

(Jota’s crosses are much better than Maeda offers from the wing, also worth consideration over who plays where.)

So, just to be clear, Paul – the way for Celtic to improve is to sell players like Jota and replace them with players like Yang? Hmmmmmm – not sure you’ll have too many takers on that one!

Looking just like the Jota of old with that inswinging cross from the half-space to the back post and the far-side winger coming inside to finish. Always baffled when people shout for two up front when you get far more from three.

As for the fourth – and especially the Engels pass – what can you say other than wow!

Reckon Schlupp can provide some physicality, energy and versatility.

    Things looking pretty good!

  3. Great pass from Arne last night .

I thought that his pass on Sunday was meant for Yang ,but was overhit .

    Maeda chasing ,made the pass.

  4. I don’t often bother criticizing the media because I can look the other way and come to my own conclusions but this headline in the BBC ‘gossip’ is a beaut:

“Rangers reject multiple approaches for striker as Irish teenager chooses Premier League ahead of Celtic…“

Talk about putting lipstick on their -13 point pig. I suppose this means they are coming……right?

  5. Now imagine it was Yang in the corner facing his own goal. That goal doesn’t happen. Simple as that.

  6. Nicolas Kuhn didnt look overjoyed when he scored Celtics 6th Goal last night,,,,how ever, he was more than happy to congratulate Arne Engels when he scored Celtics 5th Goal.

Some of us are guilty of coming to the wrong conclusion by judging a players ” body language ” on occasions, and maybe its NOT an indication of how a Player may be feeling at that moment in time ?

How many ” BODY LANGUAGE EXPERTS” on here managed to detect that Kyogo was wanting a transfer away from Celtic for months ?

All the same, I hope that Celtic do NOT piss off Nicolas Kuhn IF he is NOT in the starting line up every week ?

Yes, noticed that on the unique angle footage.

The way Diazen the sweeps the ball up over the keeper is sublime…

  9. I said last night that under normal circumstances we could not afford to sign or to keep a player as good as Jota. He is not the project we previously bought from Benfica. He is every inch the 25-30 million pounds player that we sold and in a couple of seasons likely to be valued at a lot more than that.

I hope, like Larsson, he decides to give us his best years now and is in no rush to try his luck in a top 5 league. His Saudi and French adventures are going to stay in his memory for a long time.

  11. We’re reportedly paying 50% of Schlupp’s wage – roughly 30K.

I won’t and can’t speak for Taylor. But if I see my back up getting 30K off Celtic a week and I’m the main man asking for 25K and not getting it, it makes me more likely to leave.

    ———————

That scenario happens every day of the week just guys on the building sites , your on a contract and agency workers get a better hourly rate to meet the needs because it’s short term , a stop gap so to speak ……i

  12. So many talking points from last night. I’ll limit myself to a few

    4th goal was exceptional

Engels is a very special player.

Schlupp will come good, though last night showed how quickly the others zip the ball with one or two touches

    Yip. Agreed, BJ.

And it’s broadly the same “some of us” repeatedly.

“We do not see things as they are. We see things as we are” (Variously attributed)

Every silver lining has a cloud I suppose.

  14. I love Taylor …..any player coming in would do well to watch Greg’s movement a positions and energy throughout the field of play …..and BTW, wins /competes for headers better than some give him credit for .

  15. My tuppence worth ( I’m not a body language expert) I don’t think Khün celebrated as it was our 6th goal, game was won didn’t want to rub it in?

  16. TINYTIM

Daizen didn’t particularly celebrate his first goal last night. Seems to be a thing these days especially against so called weaker opposition.

Not everyone is like Kenny D or Henrik when they score.

Even some fans don’t bother getting off their seats.

  17. Tom McLaughlin on

On Sportscene last night the commentator described Engels’ second goal as his first from open play. Celtic Fans TV said the same thing.

Wrong! Arne scored the opener from open play in Celtic’s 3-0 defeat of Hibernian at Celtic Park on 7th December.

Celtic should have been awarded a penalty from the corner a couple of minutes prior to the VAR penalty award. On both occasions the referee was a few yards away and failed to blow his whistle for either infarction.

What is the point of the referee constantly delaying corners to warn players about jostling in the goalmouth if he lacks the courage to punish fouls resulting from the incoming cross?

  18. Should have added TT , think you’re maybe reading too much into it.

Is your angstmeter on high just now 😁

  19. The return of Tom , and he gives us infarction . Infraction sir .

    Welcome back 😜😉

During the after-match celebrations, Nicholas Kühn was laughing and joking with teammates. He certainly didn’t look like an unhappy player.

Watch out for that dreaded confirmation bias. It can drive you mad.

  22. That 4th goal last night…

Sometimes the game retains & exhibits its’ beauty.

    ……………

You may well be correct mate.

I just hope that Nicolas Kuhn does NOT get pissed off IF hes not starting every game now, due to Jota coming in ?

Maybe Celtic could play a FRONT FOUR of ” Jota, Nicolas, Diazen and Adam” against Raith Rovers this Saturday in the Cup Tie….Just as a wee ” EXPERIMENT” ?

    LOL.

  24. Telling words from Brenda

“I think you saw the difference tonight with the counter-pressing and the numbers around the ball and winning the duels, and that gives us the possibilities to play and when we play like that then we can produce great moments.”

  25. Tremendous display of high tempo, attacking, entertaining football, I hope Dundee stay up,they are one of the few teams who come out and give us a game, the players really look like they’re enjoying it as well.

  26. As one or two others have already said, most likely Jota started last night in an effort to get him up to speed for Bayern next week with Daizen suspended.

Hopefully we are still in the tie for the second leg and would expect our bullet train back in the starting eleven.

Nic has shaded a little bit lately so perhaps having less game time will refresh him.

Three proper wide men now , we just looked on it last night.

Maeda goals this season so far,I know that he signed a new contract last year, but he deserves to be up with the highest earners at the club, which I presume will go up with the return of KT,he’s so valuable to the way we play, he will be a big miss v Bayern but hopefully if we are still in the tie,he could be a surprise for the return game to them.

TexasTim – “I don’t often bother criticizing the media because I can look the other way and come to my own conclusions but this headline in the BBC ‘gossip’ is a beaut:”

Indeed, we can all look the other way, and many of us do, but when it comes to BBC Scotland, most of us are legally obliged to pay for it.

  29. Bayern Munich chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen has revealed why they will always keep their ticket prices cheap after selling briefs for just £15 for their fans to watch the Champions League showdown with Celtic.

And while Celtic fans have to pay £46 for their season ticket seat for the first leg, Bayern fans will pay as little as £15 to secure their place for their home game. And the cost for a season ticket holder at the Allianz Arena for Bundesliga games works out at just £8.33 per match. Now Dreesen explained why they will always keep their ticket prices low.

He said: “I am deeply convinced that it must be possible for someone who doesn’t have a job today to be able to go to the cinema and pay roughly the same price for a standing ticket in our stadium.

“The fans in the stands are the backbone and foundation of the team. That’s where our power comes from, that’s where the atmosphere comes from. A Bayern fan with a standing area season ticket pays the equivalent of less than 10 euros per Bundesliga game during the season.

“That’s unbelievably cheap. I am very pleased we are still able to offer such prices. Yes. we could increase the prices without any problems – because we have a list of I don’t know how many people who will pay any price… but we don’t want that. It is right that football and sport remain accessible.”
