Jozo, medicals and a midfielder

414

Reports that Jozo Simunovic may have failed his medial (not always a euphemism for rejecting a derisory contract offer) at Torino come as little surprise, but will be a distraction to Celtic as they had backfill offers ready to move. The player is fit, but will need to put a season together which demonstrates this beyond all doubt.

Some insight into what failing a medical can sometimes mean might be useful:

Medicals provide an overview of a player’s condition.  When an issue appears, as will often happen by default for a previously injured player, an alert is raised.  The buying club can then instruct a more detailed examination of the player.  Celtic occasionally send players to London for a second examination for this purpose.   Even then, with the best medical opinion money can buy, you are presented with no more than an opinion.

Whatever the first or second examination determines, the information is presented to the club, who have a decision to make.  If the player’s VO2 Max isn’t where it should be, but he’s not trained for six months, they might be prepared to take the chance.  Clubs seldom get a scan which reveals something as decisive as a piece of bone hanging off.  An evidence based but subjective view is taken.  Turino may be here right now.

The Jozo situation is symptomatic of the problems and opportunities of deadline day. If Jozo stays, another player, his club and agent, will only now be looking for an alternative move if Celtic is no longer an option. That will seriously annoy those concerned but this is the nature of the day, and creates opportunities for others.

Our principle target to add to the squad (not to swap like-for-like) is a midfielder. We’ve been working on this for a while but the nature of the target is such that there can be no guarantees, even at this stage.

What I can repeat is that despite what has again been reported (and at the risk of standing on a lonely ledge), Celtic have no idea where the James McCarthy story came from. It didn’t come from them and there is nothing in it.

Stay tuned!

    Very good!

    :-)

He would rather have gone to Brighton I hear, but they’re in the Championship.

    HH!!

  2. No excuses for not getting a couple of decent midfielders in after last Tuesday, forget EPL Monopoly money stuff, there are plenty of good players who would sign for Celtic.

  3. Still might Bada, I think they had their eye on someone and its fell through or they have their eye on a cracker hence Jozo being sold.

So who do you reckon would be in budget that we should sign ?

    Any suggestions.

Agree, we need two, one in this window should have been (maybe still is) a minimum.

We go into the CL with a midfield not good enough for EL, as last season proved. We have improved in defence with Toure and hopefully Gamboa, have competition at keeper and look a lot better up front with Sinclair and Dembele. Midfield is our glaring weakness

  6. Bada Bing,

you are right, loads of good players available,

but maybe not those that BR wants

  7. All the best at Balckburn Charlie. Forget what anyone else says… The GB done a song about you… That speaks volumes. You did a great job for us. Left back, centre half, left mid and at the back. Obviously the goal as mentioned… But 2 great games I mind are v the Huns in the sammy show at ibrox and the cup final against Motherwell. Also brilliant on dead ball.

I hope you and Stokesy do the biz in Blackburn.

    HAIL HAIL

  8. I am fine about not signing lots of players. Brendan will be happy as he seems to have got most of the ones he has wanted. He will have a list and will wait to get the players he wants, As it is we are miles better than anything we will play or have played domestically. With Paddy, Christie and Ajer still to show this season. No point chasing europe after one season, lets see if we can get to Europa League and strengthen again in January.

I’d try Ajer in MD or Erik. Lustig at the back with Toure or Eoghn.

  9. …hearin’ that when Senderos had a look at the “deal” they were offering for year 2 ,

    he hit the roof.

  10. As the months and years go on I sometimes feel like I am caught in a timewarp as Paul’s leaders become increasingly inane excuses – just like the celtic view of yesteryear.

That he doesn’t blush when posting his nonsense really screams arrogance – but hey he is close to an arrogant board that doesn’t blush at taking non contractual bonuses either.

But lets deconstruct a wee bit.

Lets talk about Jozo. Signed in a blaze of publicity after we sold van dijk, the daily record (no less) told us celtic had pushed the boat out to keep van dijk but could persuade him and now we had spent £5M on jovo. It was, ahem, a load of pish. The figures were guff and it was a rather embarrassing attempt to appease celtic supporters. Celtic were clearly happy to use the DR on that occasion to peddle misinformation to the celtic support so I have to laugh at the tirade against the record. Its only doing your boards bidding guys. Like I keep saying stop complaining – you signed up to this.

Now of course we are selling the miracle player that is Jozo. Wow – some return that celtic – well done.

Its pathetic – but hey fair play to Paul its now an excuse not to spend any money in the transfer window – cos errr we were distracted and it is all a bit hard isn’t it after all?

Now celtic have spent near to zero from a net spend perspective (ah remember all that net spend stuff of the past – brings a wee nostalgic tear to the eye so it does) – despite getting an extra £40M in income this year. Doesn’t that make you glad?

Just think of those bonuses. Those made up provisions in the accounts.

    I’m getting all nostalgic again.

None of this augurs well. Peter and the board want your hun friends to be competitive – after all its the lifeblood of racism (oops sorry competition). .

And when we get hammered in the CL we can all smile in the pleasure that Peter and co will get extra bonuses.

Same old excuses trotted out, we don’t have time, its too hard, we need 3 transfer windows. CQN does do an excellent groundhog day to be fair. Jam tomorrow folks. Jam tomorrow.

No doubt the DR will be used to justify it – alongside Paul of course.

    Happy transfer window closure…….

  12. I will be delighted if we are NOT interested in McCarthy .

    He is vastly overrated.

Everton don’t want rid for nothing.

Al the very best to Big Chaz Mulgrew, a true Celt and a hunskelper who enjoyed getting it right up the hun.

I dont buy this walking off the park pish. As unusual as it was, he said he was injured, the club said he was injured and Im willing to accept that.
