Jozo’s Achilles, McGregor, McGeady, succession for Scott

464

You can be sure Peter Lawwell was not working on contract renewals for Scott Brown, Jozo Simunovic and Callum McGregor last month, as the transfer window reached is climax, but 14 days after it closed, all three have signed new long-term deals.

Scott’s keeps him at the club until he turns 34 in two years. Jozo is contracted to 2021, when he will be 27, while Callum this morning also agreed to stay until 2021, when he will be 28.

Callum is a fascinating case study in player development. After making a substantial impact on the right wing, his form faded, but he has been reborn in central mid. More than anyone else at the club, he has an ability to instantly bring a difficult pass under control. This affords him that valuable commodity: vision.

I’m not going to tell you Callum is as good as the PSG players we saw on Tuesday, but he is the only player we have in the mould of their midfielders. They also fire the ball around with precision and control. Aiden McGeady had this ability in abundance (none of his Celtic contemporaries did). I’d like to have seen the Green Garrincha in a central role.

My sense is that we may have struggled to re-sign Jozo if questions didn’t hang over his knee. His ability is comfortably worth an eight-figure transfer fee and far higher wages than Celtic could afford. The player’s proverbial Achilles heel may bestow long-term stability in Celtic’s defence.

Celtic gambled on signing him two years ago – and let’s not forget the comments pages here were full of angst, as a regional Guardian journalist expressed astonishment that we’d gone for what he viewed as such a limited talent. We are in a place where we need to take a few chances. This one paid off.

I fully expect Scott Brown will sign one more Celtic contract to see him through his mid-30s, when thoughts at the club will turn to succession.

Our current 3 have more mobility and pace…but no Henke.Yin and yang I suppose.

  3. How old do you have to be to be classed as a man ?

I reckon, and this is only how I see it, a male that is 21 years old still has the intelect of a five year old, the majority of young fellas are just starting to get any semblence of understanding how the world and themselvs work at sixteen…ish, females mature a wee bit younger.

This is in no way a defence of the twat that ” invaded ” the pitch the other night, he deserves everything that is coming to him, if he or anyone wants to act daft, well you have to pay the consequences if you break others folks rules and get caught, but in general this is how I see things.

So, all in all he was just a wean :-)

Regarding the guy who ran on the park during the game.

He couldn’t have read the papers last week that armed Police would be policing the game,

that should have been a deterant for anyone to invade the pitch, the police would have been told

to bring down anyone that acted suspiciously, it could have happened, and that would have been

disasterous for the person that acted stupidly by invading the playing surface of Celtic Park.

That prayed on my mind after it happened and I still was thinking about it when travelling back into the City Centre, I wasn’t good company to the guys I met in the BV, I never brought it up to anyone I met but it prayed on my mind all night, even when I went to bed I thought about what could have happened.

  27. Someone running onto the pitch is shocking, what was worse was the pathetic way he puffed out his chest after being led off by stewards. A crowdfunding page to cover fines only encourages another to have their 20 seconds in the spotlight and receive a raft of rants from the MSM. Do these people and I include the crowdfunders, hate Celtic that much, or hate that Rangers were liquidated first? “Aww, how come we wurnae first, etc.” I just wish the swivel-eyed banjo players would follow another team instead. Sullying Celtics name is only something a current-bun inspired numbnut would do if they were honest with themselves.

  28. Bob O Badly…………….in the current world climate with regard terrorism etc this was a serious breach of security and I can see EUFA throwing the book at Celtic. Zero tolerance. I hope not.

    ###

The armed police would have been there to deal with the terrorist threat, not errant supporters.

By the time a terrorist is on the pitch it’s too late to do much about it. Shooting wouldn’t be an option, and it wouldn’t be a deterrent to anyone seeking martyrdom.

Their priority should have been stopping anyone getting on the pitch, not shooting anyone who did it.

Which makes you wonder just how lax Police Scotland have been.

Questions should be asked, but won’t be.

  30. HANKRAY on 14TH SEPTEMBER 2017 3:13 PM

That responsibility should lie with Police Scotland, not Celtic.

  31. Hi Paul67,

Great to see the bhoys sign new contracts, certainly part of the fulcrum secured.

Callum is a very underrated talent, maybe we were keeping him a little under wraps until he signed? Thought after his display in Middlesbrough we would see his value rocket…

One thing though… The criticism of Jozo…

I was critical, yet only insofar as he was injured when he began playing with us, Jozo had to play constricted until we had a chance to replace him in the January with Sviatchenko – he then had a long rehabilitation and his condition must be managed.

    Now he is unsellablish… Thankfully;)
