Jullien and backfill

209

We are not short of choices, but the trophy win from our quadruple treble my mind most falls back on is the League Cup Final win over Newco in 2019, the 10th trophy of the series.  Celtic were without a fit striker to start the game, Lewis Morgan was thrown into the role.

Even though that season produced another treble, this was a game in which demonstrated the decline of the imperious team that had gone 69 matches undefeated earlier in our quadruple run.  Still, Celtic did what Celtic always did then, found what was necessary to win the trophy.

Newco battered us throughout the 90 minutes, plus 8 added at the end, but the game turned on a four-minute spell midway through the second half.  Odsonne Edouard replaced Morgan on 59 minutes and was fouled the first time the ball went near him.  Christopher Jullien met the resulting Ryan Christie free kick to score the only goal of the game.

Three minutes after that, Jeremie Frimpong was red carded and conceded a penalty.  Alfredo Morelos’ effort was saved by Fraser Forster, who put on one of the greatest goalkeeper performances I have ever seen.

Under so much pressure, with our run on the line, Jullien’s goal brought a moment of sheer elation.  For me, no other goal in the entire 12 trophy run matches it.  Just over a year later, Chris was injured.  It was 14 months before we saw him on the field again, by which time a new manager was in place with a new defensive partnership and plan for the future.

He travelled to Germany yesterday for a medical ahead of a planned move to Schalke.  This examination will not go through on the nod, so there are no guarantees the deal will conclude.  At 29, Chris cannot afford to sit on the bench, or stand, and wait for his chance.  If he gets his move, it will be a bittersweet parting.

Those of you who are paying attention will note, the squad headcount is close to being relieved of an occupant in central defence.  Backfill is the more interesting question.

Meant to comment about the origin of your moniker the other day, but never got round to it. I’ve always been a Dead fan, and have seen their shows many time, including this one in Philly. ( No need to bring any drugs with you. Just relax and breathe in! )

Garcia was a simply wonderful talent. They opened ( as they often did ) with the Berry classic Promised Land. Check out Garcia’s solo after the first verse and in conclusion. I saw the Dead play this umpteen times and Garcia’s solos were never the same. He would use different guitars on consecutive nights and always do something innovative. Always superb.

CELTIC MAC ( From yesterday )

Meant to comment about your right hand/left hand post but didn’t get round to it.

Here is an oddity I experienced. In my very early years, I was brought up ( or dragged up ) on the Isle of Lewis. My brother and I were both right handed. Just as well, as the Wee Frees interpreted left handedness as ‘sinister’ ( and technically, they were correct, Lat. ‘of the left’ ) and actively dissuaded left handed kids from using the left hand to write, draw, or anything else.

Years later, I was playing Juvenile in the Paisley and District Leagues. The coach strongly stressed using the weaker foot at every opportunity, and had training sessions devoted solely to that. His stated aim was to “make one foot as bad as the other.🤣”. At that age, we took to it like ducks to water. In short order, I was dribbling, passing, crossing, shooting with the left, as well as taking corners and free kicks. Being two footed never left me.

Now the oddity. I was fairly useful at table tennis, playing singles and doubles in a Youth Club team from Bellahouston in a Glasgow league. ( My doubles partner was Alec Gray, who went on to captain Partick Thistle in their famous 4-1 League Cup Final trouncing of us in 1971.

One day, I was playing Alex, and losing. It was my turn to serve, and without thinking, I used my left hand, completely flummoxing him as it was the last thing he expected. I then kept interchanging hands, and beat him comfortably. He said, “When did you learn to do that?” I said, “I didn’t.”

Being ambidextrous helped me enormously at table tennis, but the odd thing was that I couldn’t write, draw, play lawn tennis, lawn bowls, golf, or use any kind of tools left handed to save myself.

On the hand ( see what I did there? ), I could drink left handed.

I have never figured it out.

  10. Listening to some real roasters on here tonight.Anyone saying Jullien was not a very good CH knows nothing about football.Really,nothing.

The LC final that FF gets all the credit for,Jullien was a behemoth against them.Clearing everything they threw at us.

But wasting my time.Narrow closed minds will not be opened.

Evening, I have read your previous posts in support of Chris, which you are more than entitled to have your opinion which I fully respect.

Personally, I have stated that IMHO, Chris became again in my opinion a better player with hindsight than the player that I seen.

Now if you think that I and others are ‘Roasters’ and know nothing about football then fair enough.

Maybe Ange is better placed to make judgement on Chris’s value to the team. or do you believe that our manager is also a ‘Roaster.

This is not a snide or personal response to your earlier post, just my opinion.

Had to wait until Andy Murray got a set back before responding.

Well worth the effort practising with the (usually) left foot re football, amazing how few professionals even today are able to rely on both feet. With left and right hands, has to be brain related, cellular, molecular whatever, some kind of memory. The table tennis thing is interesting, innate most certainly.

Iniquitousiv, another fan of the great Jerry Garcia. I’ve thought he was superb since 1970, American Beauty and Workingmans Dead. I have more Dead and Garcia cds/downloads than I can count. Garry Duncan was a fan too, especially after a wee smoke. 😂. RIP Delaneys Dunky. 😪
