Jullien and backfill

209

We are not short of choices, but the trophy win from our quadruple treble my mind most falls back on is the League Cup Final win over Newco in 2019, the 10th trophy of the series.  Celtic were without a fit striker to start the game, Lewis Morgan was thrown into the role.

Even though that season produced another treble, this was a game in which demonstrated the decline of the imperious team that had gone 69 matches undefeated earlier in our quadruple run.  Still, Celtic did what Celtic always did then, found what was necessary to win the trophy.

Newco battered us throughout the 90 minutes, plus 8 added at the end, but the game turned on a four-minute spell midway through the second half.  Odsonne Edouard replaced Morgan on 59 minutes and was fouled the first time the ball went near him.  Christopher Jullien met the resulting Ryan Christie free kick to score the only goal of the game.

Three minutes after that, Jeremie Frimpong was red carded and conceded a penalty.  Alfredo Morelos’ effort was saved by Fraser Forster, who put on one of the greatest goalkeeper performances I have ever seen.

Under so much pressure, with our run on the line, Jullien’s goal brought a moment of sheer elation.  For me, no other goal in the entire 12 trophy run matches it.  Just over a year later, Chris was injured.  It was 14 months before we saw him on the field again, by which time a new manager was in place with a new defensive partnership and plan for the future.

He travelled to Germany yesterday for a medical ahead of a planned move to Schalke.  This examination will not go through on the nod, so there are no guarantees the deal will conclude.  At 29, Chris cannot afford to sit on the bench, or stand, and wait for his chance.  If he gets his move, it will be a bittersweet parting.

Those of you who are paying attention will note, the squad headcount is close to being relieved of an occupant in central defence.  Backfill is the more interesting question.

  1. SFTBs,

Absolute nonsense about Jullien. You think we paid too much for at the time, the best CH in France,at 7 million.Look at his stats in France. This at a time, very ordinary CHs were being sold for ridiculous prices culminating in the sale of Mc Guide to United for 90 million.

We got another terrific bargain with Jullien.Stop talking nonsense about the guy, trying to sound smug about him and Hobo.

    Note the tense

He no longer fits in to Angeball, if he ever did plus if personal reports are accurate he was a bit of an arse

Personally I liked him and Bobo as defenders

Good shout out for Absolute Roasters. I’m sure the Hyndland St coffee shop will appreciate it.

As for Christopher Jullien, it seems your judgement was sooooooooo far out.

Not to worry we all get it wrong some times, just as your source got it totally wrong about Eddie Howe.

    However, onward and upward.

    Thanks for your reply.

I agree, I may nothing about football.

Can I ask you about your opinion on our managers ability to identify players that suit his football philosophy, or do believe his opinion is nonsense?

    Genuine, respectful, question.

  8. SFTB @ Lourdes / Ottoman @ 8.50

CJ @ £7mill — we paid too much.

CS @ £4.5mill — we paid too much.

CCV @ £6mill — not a bargain but we know what we are getting / £10mill is having a laugh.

Nobody is going to argue that CJ is a great footballer — he is.

Nobody is going to argue that CJ can be great defender — he can.

The issue is that he can be over emotional and his form can did dramatically.

He is either riding the crest of a wave or he is floundering in a trough.

For a CB that is not a great trait to have.

He head had left P/head long before any move was organised.

He needed to develop a level of consistency to justify his £7mill valuation.

It never happened — and he would not have been an asset for us in the coming season.

I was always a McEnroe fan but I loved Lendl’s cheeky wee serve where he just tapped it over the net, JP was livid at the time

  11. I will miss CJ’s presence in the opposition box, none of our current players comes close to his finishing ability

    Thanks for your engagement tonight.

It’s all about opinions, we might agree or disagree, however we are all Celtic supporters, ( as long as the trolls are not posting) and that what matters, well to me.

I envy your location in Turkey, the warmth, the laid back approach to life, in general.

My family are back in good old ML5. Coatbridge.

The weather today did not know what to do, sunny, windy, torrential rain.

    It’s ‘Flamin’ June’ apparently.

Take care and God bless, hopefully at sometime in the future we can have a chin wag over a cold beer.

You claim that Jullien was the best CH in France, at the time we signed him.

    Really?…Says who?…You?

Our current (highly respected) manager chose not to play CJ last season – when he was fit & available.

You’ve been asked, more than once, for your opinion of our manager in regards to his non- selection of CJ.

    Still awaiting your response…mmm.

Do you regard Ange as a Roaster too?

Do you think you are a better judge of a player than Ange? You talk as though you do.

Your posting has been exceptional over the last few days. Your cost analysis has been detailed and precise however I wonder how it will compare to Celtic’s

Exceptionally wrong ,selectively detailed and imprecise. There is no cost analysis.no cost was mentioned,a glittering array on interest rate fluctuating nooses for Celtic to place its head in.

I agree the stand may need redone, but it is not a priority at the moment.£1m to £1.2m gets spent monthly, upgrading all aspects of our home..

  17. Easy guys

Turkeybhoy is allowed his opinion, some of the posters might not agree with the opinion, however that’s what Celtic’s chat is about.

Regarding my numbers on a Main Stand expansion — if you have better then lets be having them?

I will even give you a deferment on your Monetarism homework to get you moving.

Interest rate fluctuating nooses — overly emotive wouldn’t you say?

You mention that we spend £1.0 / £1.2mill monthly on our home — care to elaborate?

I fear you are getting mixed up between running costs and investment.

For a City / Big Bang bean counter that is a bit of a schoolboy howler.

“Absolute nonsense about Jullien. You think we paid too much for at the time, the best CH in France,at 7 million”

    ———————————

Chris’s career was that he got a free transfer to Freiburg from his first pro club< Auxerre, He played 4th tier for Freiburg 2nd team and then loaned to Dijon in Ligue2 before getting his chance for Toulouse. In 3 seasons with them his team finished 13th,18th and 16th in the top division. He has never been selected for a French international cap but was in an under 20 squad in 2013 when he was an unused squad member in 7 games at the u-20 WC finals- not one minute on the pitch.

Hardly a lot of evidence to suggest he was the best French CB in his country.

I judge Bobo and Chris by the levels they achieved before and after us. MON managed to get the best out of Bobo- a cult figure- intimidating but an occasional liability. He too was not sought after by any top French team and was, like Chris, at best a bottom 6 of Ligue 1 or a Ligue 2 player. That makes them good enough for consideration for Celtic but Bobo was a free transfer and Chris cost £7m.

I have no fear of your estimation of my footballing nous- there are many here who know more and better than me, but even if CJ is a better player than the rating I have of him- the evidence is not there that he has delivered £7m worth of value to Celtic.

Good night all from the centre of the universe, sunny Govanhill. I hope to see you tomorrow at the Horseshoe. 1pm all welcome, no exceptions. As my friend AT will always say- Glasgow Celtic, a football club and family open to all.

  23. Bobo was very good and what was needed at that time. I saw him V Utd 2006 and his tackle on Scholes (I think it was just before half-time) changed the course of the game IMHO

  24. What is the Starz on

Christopher Julien wasn’t a bad centre half and he scored a few vital goals for us….but he was a bit of a big girls blouse/ drama queen when it came to the rough and tumble of the Scottish game with its quirky rules of engagement concerning “big bruisers ” of centre forwards and their physical engagement with hooped centre halves.

Now to be fair to the gallic gentleman he might have had a point in his bewildered “quest ca cest ca sa “look towards the impartial officials during these episodes…but cest la vie
