Jullien and backfill

209

We are not short of choices, but the trophy win from our quadruple treble my mind most falls back on is the League Cup Final win over Newco in 2019, the 10th trophy of the series.  Celtic were without a fit striker to start the game, Lewis Morgan was thrown into the role.

Even though that season produced another treble, this was a game in which demonstrated the decline of the imperious team that had gone 69 matches undefeated earlier in our quadruple run.  Still, Celtic did what Celtic always did then, found what was necessary to win the trophy.

Newco battered us throughout the 90 minutes, plus 8 added at the end, but the game turned on a four-minute spell midway through the second half.  Odsonne Edouard replaced Morgan on 59 minutes and was fouled the first time the ball went near him.  Christopher Jullien met the resulting Ryan Christie free kick to score the only goal of the game.

Three minutes after that, Jeremie Frimpong was red carded and conceded a penalty.  Alfredo Morelos’ effort was saved by Fraser Forster, who put on one of the greatest goalkeeper performances I have ever seen.

Under so much pressure, with our run on the line, Jullien’s goal brought a moment of sheer elation.  For me, no other goal in the entire 12 trophy run matches it.  Just over a year later, Chris was injured.  It was 14 months before we saw him on the field again, by which time a new manager was in place with a new defensive partnership and plan for the future.

He travelled to Germany yesterday for a medical ahead of a planned move to Schalke.  This examination will not go through on the nod, so there are no guarantees the deal will conclude.  At 29, Chris cannot afford to sit on the bench, or stand, and wait for his chance.  If he gets his move, it will be a bittersweet parting.

Those of you who are paying attention will note, the squad headcount is close to being relieved of an occupant in central defence.  Backfill is the more interesting question.

No agreement between Chris Jullien and Schalke 04 on personal terms after the medical tests yesterday. He already came back to Glasgow. 🚨🟢 #transfers

Celtic will now negotiate with other clubs to find a solution, deal still open.

    So far this summers expected spend is 17 million;

    2 million for meade

    ————-

2 million for meade – I remember when you get a flagon of honey porter for a fourpenny groat ;))

Richarlison to Spurs looks like a goer.

I hope we avoid them in CL group.

They’re not “to table” from marketing, allure, history perspectives ….

    But

… Signore Conte is putting together a fairly robust squad for his high energy brand of football

Forster, Bissouma, Richarlison – quality, power, energy and depth up the spine of the team.

I think they could be a handful this season.

AB says that the stadium looks incredible / impressive …

That should read that his CFC PR handler has told him to say that.

That a 21yr old form the land of the El Monumental / La Bombenera / La Fortaleza / El Cilindro would offer comment about the stadium on signing for the club on such an auspicious day — different continent / big wages / CL level — is a challenge to general comprehension on many levels.

Or — Aye right as they in WCS / Glesga

Well that tells me is that the comments / jibes / ideas regarding the need to rebuild the Main Stand are starting to annoy / upset / unsettle the board and so they should as their inaction over 20 plus years is a dereliction of duty that unfortunately would appear to be their standard way of working.

If only didn’t need to run the club / squad / football team then I am sure he could knock up some ideas for the Main Stand rebuild — all it takes is energy / ambition / desire.

You know the things that PL didn’t have for the club.

BTW – for those cheerleading for Ko Itakura, his ragdollability makes Chris Jullien look like big Bobo.

    Yikes.

So you have made a comment that you can’t back up — no surprise there then as this is what moon howlers do.

The £1mill / £1.2mill monthly spend on our home was just a fart in the wind / mind burp.

  9. I sit in the main stand and it is in dire need, not of an upgrade, but, a complete demolish and rebuild if that is possible. If not, then there should still be a feasibility study to see how it can be done. It brings down the stature of the stadium and is stuck in the 1930s. por cierto.

  10. On the Main Stand, the TVs above us, those sitting back from being able to see the large screens are beyond small. It is virtually impossible to see the time gone or sometimes to see the replays of goals scored. I contacted the SLO, a couple of seasons ago, to ask if they could be replaced by larger screens to be told it was a case of wind and waterproof problems, of course, I asked him were the ones there were not wind and waterproofed but never received an answer :)) They still haven’t been upgraded, por cierto…

The meade joke and ‘ragdollability’ have fair cheered me up this morning after sitting through board meetings on multiple Bemudan/Cayman entities i am now apparently a Director of. I asked loads of questions to annoy the box tickers!!!

  12. EH — worth a watching to see who he is chasing in the transfer market.

His new CB — SB / U21 for Holland — looks like he was a big miss to our radar.

Maybe if DD was his agent PL would have noticed him.

Compare and contrast our very big money move for CJ.

  13. CB signings — SB / U21 for Holland — all about timing.

    Available on loan — 2019.

    £8mill sale — 2020.

  14. Good to see Celtic listening and acting on CQN comments.

    Power washing 👍👍👍👍

    Celtic’s first Argentinian player?

    ####

    Alexandro Bernabei.

    Next question.
