Jullien, Forrest and recuperation periods

563

We are already at the stage of the season when a return of Christopher Jullien or James Forrest would have little impact on the outcome.  It will take a scheduling miracle for the Scottish Cup to reach its latter stages before club football ends to allow players to join international squads ahead of the Euros, so the news that Chris is likely to be in recuperation until the start of next season is no real hardship.

The return of James will be a welcome sight but it is hard to see any big picture relevance, no matter how brilliant he plays.  Celtic players get little time to allow limbs to rest and recuperate, this is one such period.

Sunday night in Dingwall is the very last place in Scotland’s tourist trail, apart from the Celtic squad, who will arrive looking for their sixth successive win this month.

Ross County have not played in two weeks since defeat to Dundee United, a period that has seen Hamilton collect 5 points to put the Highlanders bottom of the table.  History records that they were the team who stopped Celtic’s run of 12 consecutive domestic trophies, when they eliminated us from the League Cup during the disastrous month of November.  We owe them one.

  1. 6 months of meaningless football and our Board refuse to act and or manager hasn’t the self respect to step down.

  2. Englishwoman,Welshwoman and a Irish woman were walking along the beach when they noticed a man without arms and legs.”Oh I feel sorry for that poor man,I am going to ask him if he would like a hug” said the English woman. So she approaches the man and asks him if he had ever been hugged,”No”,came the reply so she gave him a hug and wished him well. The Welshwoman went over to the man and asked him if he was ever kissed,”No”,he replied so she kissed him and wished him well. The Irishwoman noted the generous moves from the women and went to the man and enquired if he had ever been ( censored),”No” was the reply.”Well you will when that tide comes inside the Irishwoman.

6-9 months out for Julian – NL presser.

    Well that’s sh*t news for a Friday afternoon…

    Poor Julien.

With hindsight there was no need for him to literally break a leg clearing the ball off the line.

    What a terrible season.

Can envisage a scenario where Ajer is kept throughout summer despite not signing a new contract and wanting away, due to lack of defensive cover for CL/EL qualifiers.

    Rince….repeat.

  7. julien is a poor centre back , no positional sense or body strength more likely to trip over his own boot lace and want the trainer on.

  8. If Ajer, as rumoured, was one of the players we “persuaded” to stay for 10iar then he won’t be hanging about to help just because Julien is injured.

He’ll have demanded the option to go if there is a decent offer for him.

I disagree, he may not be a great CH but he is the best we’ve got and until we can find better we can’t afford to let him go.

In reality we’ll go into next season even worse off for CH’s than we did last.

Sadly I see us starting next season with Chris Ajer as our only fit CH.

It would appear that the management and board just can’t see that.

I wouldn’t describe someone who does a last ditch clearance and crashes into the post as a woose.

  13. I thought Jullien hesitated for a couple of seconds, before going for the ball, which resulted in the injury.

Whether he wanted to go or not, Ajer is POTY and can leave with his head held high.

I’d apportion no blame to him whatsoever for this seasons’ shambles.

The same can not be said for the manager, Christie, Edouard, Griffiths, Nitcham, Elyounoussi.

    I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few.

i know its terrible but i had the same thought. His last Injury was dubious and none of the Doctors here could detect what was wrong with him. He needed his own personal physio. He was one of the want aways I feel. His comments re N’tcham were suggestive of his own mindset

  17. PARKHEADCUMSALFORD on 18TH FEBRUARY 2021 1:24 PM

Ist player leaving which affected me was Paddy Crerand. No one since has come close to that. Mind you, I was a wee boy at the time

*2nd for me. 1st was Boaby Evans which was about 3 years before Paddy, I was greetin when my da came in fae working late tae tell me, in an effort tae console me he told me we had a better player coming through who would make me forget Boaby, that was big Billy.

A couple of years prior to that my da had taken me to the 2nd leg of the Reserve League Cup Final against falkirk, we were 0-1 down from the 1st leg.

I only remember John White who the latter had drafted in for this game, they had just signed him earlier from Alloa and he would gain a Scottish cap while with them, Jim Kennedy as captain and big Billy.

We were in the stand and at the end of a game, littered with honest mistakes, as falkirk were being presented with the cup the crowd was giving the slow hand clap, which was common at the time, when a youngish mhan in front of us, well dressed with coat, dress scarf and gloves on, turned and said “that one out there will never be a player”, that was big Billy who we had high hopes for.

So when my da told me we had a better player coming through I reminded him of that, his response was in the vein of “he was in the stand with us and not in the dugout”, little did we know that the coach in the dugout would shortly leave us for the Pars but not before we won the same trophy the following season.

Good players come and go and we’ve seen plenty of them in our lifetime, some for money the club requires to maintain our lifestyle as a top class club, no laughing at the back there, others because the managers have taken the humph, Wullie Maley and Jock come tae mind, some more because they failed to live up to their promise and others because their shelf life has expired, that’s the way it is.

After the sensational gubbin fae the newly promoted Harry Wraggs with a side missing big Billy and the wee mhan being crocked after 20 minutes we should have had enough in our locker tae take care of the Maryhill Magyars especially with forwards like Kenny, Harry Harry and wee Skip Tae Ma Lou, and yet only superb goal keeping by future Celt Alan Rough kept them at bay, apart fae a Kenny goal with 20 minutes left on the clock, alas it was not too be.

Ironically 3 days prior to this we had sold the Bear and Wispy tae Crystal Palace on the same day we had beat Sliema Wanders 5-0 going on double figures in the Big Cup so things were looking up, or so we thought.

Jock who had zero confidence in any of his keepers immediately signed former free transfer Denis Connaghan, who had left the club 7 years before, after a standout performance in the LC Semi at hunden against 2nd Division St Mirren, who we had relegated the season before after a 2-2 tie at Love Street, he shut up shop for about an hour even though they had been down tae 10 men since early in the first half.

Nevertheless our paucity in front of goal caused Jock to search for another option.

He had looked at prolific goal scorer Drew Jarvie who we would have welcomed in a heartbeat. However there was nae chance the Broomfield bluenoses would sell tae us.

So imagine our consternation when watching Scotsport it was announced we had signed Dixie who was in the middle of a 6 week suspension.

Now Dixie wisnae a durty player, just hard as nails and no shrinking violet.

A couple of seasons before, not long back fae the colonies and 3 days after walloping Benfica where big Tam almost brought the stand down with a typical pile driver, I went tae Fir Park, I had been tae the EC game on the Wednesday night, but this was unusual as at the time as I was in the process of buying a house and we also had a wee baby on the way so every penny was a prisoner.

That crisp November afternoon with the night’s fair drawing a huge crowd, made up mainly of the travelling support, witnessed a fiercely competitive game and no more so than from the wee Motherwell centre who was giving Billy a torrid time.

Tae us supporters he was a wee tangerine whose parents wurnae married when he was born, what was not known though was John Kelly Deans was actually a Buddie and the first time he had went tae hades was when playing for the steelmen.

After an early Harry Harry goal the wee “dob” equalised and celebrated with gusto, however, in a free flowing second half the Bear nodded home the winner for us which left our fans on exiting the ground tae chant “Celtic, you’re gonnae carry that League, carry that League a long time” tae the tune of a popular song fae the recently released Abbey Road album.

Anyway, the night before Dixie’s first team debut for us he turned out in a reserve game against the Harry Wraggs, as we left the Jungle that night the song “the night they drove ole Dixie down” by Joan Baez, daughter of Edinburgh born Joan Bridge, was blasted out over the tannoy, never known that tae happen before in a minor game.

As we all know Dixie was a revelation for us, possibly along with Harry Harry the most sung about Celtic player in my lifetime, scoring on his debut at Firhill.

Although it’s often mentioned how his missed penalty cost us a place in the Big Cup final it should be noted that it was his goals that clinched 7IAR the previous Saturday at Methil.

Oh how the huns loved chanting “Dixie Deans superstar how many feet is it over the bar”. In the Friday’s daily’s was a picture of Dixie waiting at a bus stop after training the day before with the caption wondering if he would miss it.

Yet just over 2 weeks later though he was the “Hammer of the Hibs”, not for the last time I hasten tae add; in the 6-1 demolition of a very good Hibbee side in the SC Final in which Evan Williams was ironically back in goal.

His 2nd that afternoon was sublime, a slack headed pass back by John Brownlie was intercepted by Dixie just as Jim Herriot was getting down to it, he dribbled past both Leith players along the bye line before ramming it home and then somersaulted on the pitch.

That night I was up in Duck Bay Marina with Mrs TT celebrating another double, as I walked intae the toilet a bunch of Dumbarton lhads, including a Scottish Junior international at the time, were singing “Dixie Deans superstar, how many goals have you scored so far”.

A truly great Celt and yet 4 year later he was let go with 3 Title badges, 2 SC and 1 LC winners medals scoring 124 goals in 184 appearances, that’s a 67% scoring rate, for a measly 20 grand, in fact we actually made money as we had bought him for 17 ½ grand.

I was back out here again and phoned my da disappointed when I heard the news, he said what he always did when players moved on, his time was up son.

Now let’s look at another prolific goalscorer for the Hoops, the Teacake Lhad aka Hammer of the Huns.

Leigh in his 7 years with us has amassed 6 Title badges, 5 LC and 3 SC winners’ medals scoring 115 goals in 216 games to date, 53% which is no bad but his season high was 5 year ago; he has also played 22 times for his country as opposed to Dixie’s twice.

When Dixie left he had just turned 30, Leigh is approaching 31. Both players well loved by the fans, Dixie, a success at Fir Park where he amazingly scored more goals in a career which lasted only a year longer than when with us, failed tae reach those heights again.

Leigh was also a success with his previous clubs but is his shelf life now over, his appearances and scoring rate lead credence to that.

If and probably when he does leave we should wish him well and thank him for his services with no weeping and gnashing of teeth or paying for Director’s heated driveways.

  19. Jullien out for 6-9 months? They must have known this timescale just after the accident happened. We’re talking private medicine here and an immediate MRI scan. So why was he allowed to travel to Dubai and why wasn’t a replacement secured? Remember NFL dropped Welsh after his first (successful) game!

The more I hear the more I wonder what is going on at Celtic Park?!!!
