Juranovic, Giakoumakis, then Abada

833

I see a bit of chat on Liel Abada in the Latest News section of CQN this morning.  I have been impressed with the player from his early outings last year.  Although a winger with a prodigious assists record, it is his ability inside the box that impresses most.

He understands when to arrive in the danger area and has the speed and touch to be effective once there.  With the right tutelage, I think he may end up as a striker – you will recall, the Great Swede played on the wing until arriving in Glasgow as a 26-year-old, when an opportunity opened to play through the middle.

I sense little resistance to the potential sale of Josip Juranovic.  He had a stellar World Cup, at 27 he is in his prime and we have already recruited a replacement.  There is less unanimity when it comes to Giorgos Giakoumakis.  Gio is enormously popular and brings a different threat to any other striker at the club.  However, at 28, we know the script.  His age profile and backup status mean that he is available for the right price.

Liel does not always make the starting 11 but he would if I was picking the team.  His age and contract profile are such that we are under no pressure to sell.  But I need to ask myself what I really want from Celtic and how to get there.

I want us to be a competitive Champions League team, not the cannon fodder we were this season.  To get there, we need an excellent recruitment regime and an aggressive trading policy.  I’ll back any plan that aims for this target, anything else is conservative and unambitious – I don’t know about you, but I’m neither.

Couldn’t “work” when I first came here so bar duties and stable mucking out paid a few bills. Spent so much time at Keeneland and Churchill downs with an occasional good tip from the Coolmore lads.

Went to the Kentucky Derby for first time, 3 years ago I think. Must have posted this on here before, probably to Big Jimmy. Bunch of work colleagues and my Loovul lover who’s late father was a bookie. Country House (went off at 65-1?) was the big underdog against a well backed and strong favorite.

I was being a muppet for the most part but was telling people this would be the Derby to upset all and that Country House was also a song by Blur that won the battle of the bands as the underdog against Oasis. I know, I know. Get it on a ticket I was telling the yanks in attendance, ’tis in the stars.

It won after a stewards enquiry and I had it on two tickets. Screamed when I cashed them.

My Looval lover got a new dress and I got a wee story for work events.

I don’t gamble much on the gee-gees now but always a good time when at the track. Also pretty sure I saw Kieran Fallon in a bar in Lexington at 2:30am forcing his fingers down his throat as he was racing the next day.

Can I say that on here?

One of the last Kentucky derbys I was sitting up on CQN … and got a wee “prompt” about the American racing … shoved a daft fiver on a horse that wore the hoops … it won at 66/1 ….

Gambling is a total mugs game … but it’s magic as well :-) as long as it’s only a wee fiver of tenner now and again.

Kieran Fallon was one of my favourite jocks ..

But a hard life for them trying not to eat, if eating was part of my earning a wage … I’d be unemployed as I love ma grub

Yellow type Hoops? That was Country House and another reason to back. It was like the bumble bee kit.

Aye, a mugs game. Per earlier, hated casinos as well, never got them. A puggy with mates in a bar on a Friday back in the day? Heck yes.

  19. AIPPLE…

It was Boxing Day in December 1998.

I was living with a wee Hun Burd in Govanhill.

I picked out SEVEN Horses that day, and they included FOUR or FIVE of my favourite Jump Trainers Horses ?

I cant remember exactly ” How many” of Nicky Hendersons that he ran that day, except to say that they ALL WON at decent ODDS…..I THINK it was FIVE ?

However, for the KING GEORGE Race at KEMPTON that Boxing Day, and Nicky Henderson did NOT have a runner in it.

The Horse I fancied was called ” TEETON MILL” …Trained by Venetia Williams. It was a big, imposing White Horse, much like ” DESSIE”.

TEETON MILL won well at odds of 7/2 Favourite. I couldnt believe the ODDS of that Horse that day and I had it on maybe FOUR DIFFERENT Bookie Lines along with the other Winners, in Doubles, Trebles and Accumulators etc.

There was no ONLINE Bookie for me back then so I had been to the Bookies shop in Govanhill early that morning, with my Burds ” DUG”.

This DUG ….was AFF its Heid at the best of time….it must have been a HUN DUG ?

Anyway, after ALL my Horses had Won, i took the HUN DUG back doon to the Bookies to collect all my winnings….

When I handed over my NINE or TEN WINNING Slips…the young Guy behind the PAY OOT Windae took one look at my winning lines and said…. ” WOW, Well done Mate”.

I was in a rather low paid Job at the time, so I think I ONLY Gambled maybe around £12/ £15 that day, but i got just over £400 in winnings back.

The next day I got a Taxi to BAIRDS BAR, which was my usual pub at that time. After many Beers, I got a Taxi back to my Hun Burds hoose.

I was talking to the Taxi driver about my good fortune the day before, when he said….” Henderson had ANOTHER FOUR Winners Today. ” The Taxi driver had backed them all.

I became slightly deflated as I hadnt even bought a Newspaper that day, to have a look at the Horses, as I was in such a hurry to get to Bairds Bar and the Bevvy.. and meet some Celtic mates.

To this day, 24 years after that eventful Boxing Day, I STILL can NOT believe the Odds of ” TEETON MILL” …..and how I FAILED to buy a Newspaper and back any Horses the Day after Boxing Day.

    One day I was a CHAMP…..the next day I was a CHUMP !

    LOL

    HH Mate and Merry Christmas.

This is the 2nd Christmas without ” WEE ROCKY BHOY” running about this hoose and running me ragged. I STILL miss him every day. His ashes are in a lovely wee Casket in my Hoose.

its great to read that Wee INDIE still asks about Rocky….that warms my Heart.

    God Bless Her.

Maybe one day, you can tell her that Rocky Bhoy is in Heaven and resting peacefully and no longer in any Pain ?

  21. DAVID66….

BELMONTBRIAN Phoned me yesterday during SPARTACUS, an just before he was about to tuck into his Turkey.

I had just finished my Christmas Dinner when he Phoned, although my dinner wasnt as POSH as BRIANS.

We are hoping to meet up real soon for a right good Bevvy….I hope that you can also make it ?

Merry Christmas to you and all of your family.

It was great that Brian Phoned, as he was the only person that I spoke to yesterday. Because of my circumstances, Christmas is usually a VERY quiet time for me although…I DID have the choice of booking a taxi and going for a nice meal somewhere….but Dining Out and doing it alone isnt too great, especially at this time of year…..I should KNOW….cos I have been to Indian and Chinese Restaurants on Christmas Day on my own before….its NOT a great experience, believe me.

So its for the BEST that I stay at home on Christmas Day….and DREAM about a few Beers on Boxing Day…IF my local is OPEN Today….I hope so.

  28. Good morning all Tim’s across the Globe.

I hope you all had a lovely, peaceful time yesterday.

Right – are we appealing Turnbull’s red card?? I think we should.

Big Jimmy – Regarding a meet up, due to work the best day for me is a Friday afternoon.

    D :)

  29. Last Boxing Day win with a really weak team at St Johnstone was pivotal.

How far Celtic have come in such a short time.

Sadly no games today but Wednesday is huge.

Media narrative will be of Celtic now being held to account by VAr after years of advantage from refs. ( No mention different rules have been applied in 4 ocassions involving Celtic consorted to others )

Media narrative will be Easter Rd Jinx. Only won their once in about 7 years in the league. ( No mention we have only played there about 5 times in the league in that time ).

Meadow narrative will be resurgent Hibs after hammering Livi. ( No mention Livi were shattered after pushing us to 97th minute 3 days earlier in their first game after 6 weeks off v Hibs who had had a week and 2 days to prepare for that )

As I say it’s huge game for us. I will be in the Main Stand as no tickets to be had for Celtic end. Frankly with the pathetic song book that some of our pond life ‘faithful’ seem to enjoy I am not unhappy about that really. A guy was on here about the Huns signing re Tommy Burns demise. It is a vile song. I agree. The scum in our support singing about Ibrox disaster victims are no better though.

Hopefully the team can continue to elevate the Celtic family though on Wednesday. More of the football like yesterdays will help. Hibs lack of bus parking capability should help us.

    .

Hope and trust you are enjoying the festive period.

At the game I thought Turnbull’s red card was outrageous. However after seeing close up footage his challenge was outrageous.

A red all day long and it would be crazy to appeal it.
