Juranovic, why should we sell?

440

As we walked from our seats after the 1-1 home draw with Shakhar Donetsk, I engaged in a detest-fest against that day’s whipping boy.  “Juranovic is in ahead of Ralston because he is a better player.”  There was a lot of push-back against this opinion.

In my view, Josip did well to get goal-side of the supremely talented Mykhaylo Mudryk, who then cut inside before scoring from the edge of the area.  So before revisionism kicks in, we should acknowledge one of the stars of this World Cup was being compared unfavourably with Anthony Ralston as recently as last month.

Despite my support of him, I didn’t think Jura had a performance like he gave last night in him.  Vini Jr made so little impact against him he was hooked as Brazil failed to overcome a professional Croatia performance.

He is the best full back in Scotland, Celtic are currently cash-positive and on current trajectory, we should win the league and qualify for the Champions League group stage.  So why should we entertain the thought of selling him?

It is about what you want to happen next at Celtic.  I don’t just want to see Celtic win the league, I want to move beyond this season’s CL cannon fodder status and start winning games, qualifying for the knockout stages, as we did so recently.  To do this, we have to buy increasingly better players and pay higher wages.

Few of those we buy will excel at a World Cup the year after they arrive, some will fail to make the cut.  Not every success is destined to move on, many will become a mainstay of the team for several years.  But I would like to see Celtic increasingly get them in, inflate their value and quickly move them on before their contracts being to run down, or their age profile counts against them, or form slips.

At 27, Josip is in prime Asset Management territory.  We have already recruited his replacement, the only question is, how much?  Or do we just settle for being cannon fodder?

  1. If Ajax paid 23 million for Bassey, Shirley we should be looking at that as our starting figure.

    (See what I did there)

    Juranovic had a great game.

No deal till after the World Cup where the players stock just keeps going up, and up.

AP could even afford to save the player from mundane games like ‘ Ross County’ where Tony Ralston more than good enough . Juranovic in Europe with retrospect, was a clue he’d be sold.

Showcasing him against Brazil and the like with the world watching was very shrewd, now for the price?

  3. I agree 100 percent with your argument here Paul. We should also take into consideration a players career. I think this is JJ’s prime moment to achieve a career defining move, certainly in terms of big wages and we shouldn’t deny him that. Who is willing to buy and at what price? Regarding comparative player pricing I note that Calvin Bassey is only 23 and JJ’s age may make using Bassey’s transfer fee as a starting point null. I’d say certainly no less than 15M for JJ, but definitely a good negotiator should be aiming to top Bassey’s price.

  4. Engurlish Media, manager, players (Kane and Maguire etc) and fans talking up

that they can win the cup. Usual delusion. Hope France stuff them and shut them up again.

  6. Stuck a few quid on 3-2 for the brits and 3-2 for the French, I kept seeing 3-2 in a dream, both 40/1, so I thot it was worth a tenner each, prob a different game right enough, but here’s hoping >:)

  10. Paul67,

For a very smart guy you have “interesting” conclusions…

Or do we just settle for being cannon fodder?

If you look at the three outings Jura has had with Vinicius Jr this season, I’d suggest he is getting better and better by experience

The fact is for most of the first half at Celtic Park and the beginning of the second half, Celtic contained Real Madrid, then their attack, upped a gear, Vini et al looked awesome

Yesterday Jura threw Vini in the bini!

This experience is invaluable and we shouldn’t be putting a price on it – we need Josip for next seasons UCL campaign and no money should take this “asset” away from us

BTB: Anyone who thinks Juranovic is similar to Ralston knows as much about football as I know about quantum physics

    Hail Hail

  11. The returnof weeron on

    All well and good, Paul67.

However, the rinse and repeat stuff only works if we replace outgoing players with better ones. I haven’t heard anyone suggest that AJ will be a step up from JJ. And, if that unlikely scenario comes to pass, it will be next season or later before it happens. So, best scenario, we take a step back for a season or so.

I know that we have to do this. We need the money, and there will always be players who want the big money move to Brighton or Huddersfield. However, they giddy way that folk are describing this ‘strategy’ ignores the need to have a mostly settled team, most of the time.

A related weakness that needs to be sorted is our inability to attract, improve and retain quality young players. That is as – or more – important to our future. Is there any encouraging news on that front?

Pep warned us years ago about that clown of a referee who did his best to spoil last night’s game:

“Following his dismissal against Liverpool, when Guardiola confronted the referee for disallowing Leroy Sané’s goal for offside despite the ball being knocked into his path by James Milner, the City manager said: “Mateu Lahoz is a special guy, he likes to be different, he likes to be special”.

He made sure the camera was on him plenty last night, in his last World Cup match, hopefully.

  13. The only way to improve our record in Europe. Is to keep our better players and replace the inferior ones with better.

Not selling our best players and replacing them with a project that might come good.

  14. Juranovic had a great game yesterday and I don’t think he’ll play for us again. The commentary team loved him and I think he’ll end up going to England. I still think he’s a better attacking player than defensive and while I like him, I don’t think he’s brilliant. In comparison to former right backs, well without mentioning the one and only Danny, Lustig was a better player than JJ.

  15. SAINT STIVS @ 1:35 PM,

    here we go again…

Great stuff, all hairy Mary quite contrary of course

Sadly , as usual in terms of transfers you skip the facts in your haste to blame the board, any board. Fast forward to your fantasy league football or in actuality the Achilles heel Champions League.

You ignore the fact that Celtic have already signed a third international right back?

You ignore the fact JJ refused new terms.

You ignore the fact he’s refused a new contract beyond the one, he has.

You ignore the fact his contract talks broke down before the WC and Celtic as warned by AP put him up for sale.

You ignore the fact that there is no middle ground for Celtic to match, the salaries that his agent has dangled.

You ignore the fact that Josip is by with Celtic, and his 15k a working week is not going to sustain him.

We can’t keep all our stunning signings anywhere on the scale of Di Canio to Dembele. Giakoumakis under contract to 2026 may be next up, and the football world outwith CQN said we were daft signing him?

    Chilly in the Chilterns?

    HH

  19. CHAIRBHOY et al – we are all speaking from the heart about JJ, we’d rather not sell him.

The reality is, we have already bought his replacement and JJ will leave in January.

We have not spent 4-5 million on AJ to sit on the bench behind Tony. We also must accept that Ange is happy with this new signing, that he was scouted beforehand and that it is not a panic buy from PL’s pet agent as the Jabuary window is about to slam shut.

JJ knows he must leave now to achieve the best contract he can for himself and his family. His stock will never be higher than it is this month. He knows he is worth more than we are willing or able to pay him.

The club and JJ have clearly agreed on this.

We will get a good fee for him and move on.

  20. Josip – what a great problem to have.

Simples for me. We either sell him for stupid money (20 ++) or we keep him and challenge Johnston / Ralston.

A good place to be – well done JJ.

  21. BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 2:01 PM,

Frosty for sure, chilled for sure…

You must be in good health, not doing that fortnightly chore from Rutherglen to Parkheid must be a relief – you wear those medals well

We need good, experienced footballers more than we need cash (cheers big Pedro;)

    UCL 2022/23, 2023/24 is where it’s at…

If Josip doesn’t want to be here and Ange is chilled that he’s leaving – cool
