As we walked from our seats after the 1-1 home draw with Shakhar Donetsk, I engaged in a detest-fest against that day’s whipping boy. “Juranovic is in ahead of Ralston because he is a better player.” There was a lot of push-back against this opinion.
In my view, Josip did well to get goal-side of the supremely talented Mykhaylo Mudryk, who then cut inside before scoring from the edge of the area. So before revisionism kicks in, we should acknowledge one of the stars of this World Cup was being compared unfavourably with Anthony Ralston as recently as last month.
Despite my support of him, I didn’t think Jura had a performance like he gave last night in him. Vini Jr made so little impact against him he was hooked as Brazil failed to overcome a professional Croatia performance.
He is the best full back in Scotland, Celtic are currently cash-positive and on current trajectory, we should win the league and qualify for the Champions League group stage. So why should we entertain the thought of selling him?
It is about what you want to happen next at Celtic. I don’t just want to see Celtic win the league, I want to move beyond this season’s CL cannon fodder status and start winning games, qualifying for the knockout stages, as we did so recently. To do this, we have to buy increasingly better players and pay higher wages.
Few of those we buy will excel at a World Cup the year after they arrive, some will fail to make the cut. Not every success is destined to move on, many will become a mainstay of the team for several years. But I would like to see Celtic increasingly get them in, inflate their value and quickly move them on before their contracts being to run down, or their age profile counts against them, or form slips.
At 27, Josip is in prime Asset Management territory. We have already recruited his replacement, the only question is, how much? Or do we just settle for being cannon fodder?

Seems to be a different mood on TV channels this morning.Gone is the Colgate smiles we witnessed the last few days and the camera swinging into action into different locations in merry Ingerlund, with the locals telling how
a certain football trophy would be making it’s way home in time for Xmas
celebrations..we have to give thanks to France from saving us from complete meltdown.●Big Jimmy @ 10.10 was 100% in his post.●
P.S. If France do win the competition…it will be a case of ah..but we were beaten by the winners.
Big J .Good luck today mate..I know you’ve made it clear previously…
That the bets are your PERSONAL choice…But i’ll say this…
compared to some other erm tipsters at least your bets come up lol..

HOT SMOKED
Sorry for the delayed reply, but, being unable to ascertain which of the 18,000 came through for me, I’ve been busy thanking them all.
Re the Greatest Of All Time discussion, I’m sure age is a factor, but maybe extensive TV coverage of European leagues and Champions league is too, especially for Messi and Ronaldo.
I’ve only seen those 2 play ‘live’ once, a 1-1 draw Celtic v Man UTD, and 2-3, v Barça, with Messi scoring twice I think, back around 2008/9.
But I’ve seen so many ‘wow’ moments of Messi, and not just great goals. Against Man City, he emerged from a tight spot with the ball with 3 opponents around him, and played a superb pass. The camera switched to the stands where Pep, on a sabbatical after Bayern Munich and pre-City, was rubbing his eyes and shaking his head at the ridiculous level of skill he had just witnessed. And I’m sure he’d seen plenty in his time.
The reason I mentioned Ronaldo no longer in the discussion is because many cite both his and Messi”s lack of a World Cup winner’s medal as being a reason why they’re behind Pelé and Maradona in the pantheon of greats.
But Messi can still win one. . .
Well, I can finally enjoy this world cup.
England historically struggle against the top teams of Brazil, Argentina, Italy, France, Spain and (latterly less so) Germany. In tournament competitions since 2000 they’ve only beat Argentina once (20 yrs ago at the grp stage) and Germany twice in 2000 and 2020, only the latter in a knockout stage.
Their run to the Euro 2020 final last year is deceptively flattering, Germany was the only “tough” draw in the knockout stages and that result is looking less impressive with each new Germany performance.
If you’re going to win the world cup you’re likely to have to beat two of those teams in knockout games, as well as one of the cyclical “contenders” which crop up every 5-10 yrs (Croatia, Belgium, Portugal, Netherlands). It’s a tough ask for a nation that imports most of its best footballers.
See snow/rain and 2 degrees high forecast for Aberdeen next weekend.
A mostly injury-free England squad against a French side without Benzema, Kimpembe, Kanté, Pogba or Hernandez, a semi-final v an injury- ravaged Morocco and then either Croatia or Argentina in the final if you beat them, and Wrighty thinks they haven’t missed a great opportunity?
Yeah, right, Wrighty.
SLÁINTE ANGE
If it is a Croatia v Morocco final, will either of them come out of their own half?
Maybe just have the anthems, a short warm-up, a coin toss and straight to penalties.
PAULSTHROUGHBALL88 @ 10:53 AM,
While big Jimmy’s earlier comment is correct and most English will see it as an opportunity missed.
My feeling is Ian Wright was trying to make the point England took their opportunity – they were against the World Champions and played well
Could they have played better? Could the starting line-up have been more adventurous? Should someone else have taken the second penalty?
There are always coulda’ shoulda’s
It was a bit cat and mouse but England played well, nullified Mbappe, relatively speaking and worked their game plan
They just weren’t good enough, they went behind twice – when France took the game to them they looked the more dangerous.
Before kick-off I said England would win it, my feeling at the second penalty was even if it had went in the game was France’s to loose.
Ian Wright obviously thought the same. England are not the best team in the World, gave ir their best shot and were found wanting
Hail Hail
BHOYJOEBELFAST
Regarding my ‘nearly, not quite’ answer to your question I must’ve been thinking of a certain Detective Inspector from around that era.
CHAIRBHOY
They were up against depleted World Champions, who might not have been able to reverse the momentum ,which a successful penalty would have given England, for a second time. I don’t share your confidence that France would have won anyway at that stage.
I agree England are not a great team, flat- track bullies, maybe. Their performance against the USA was not that of World Champions, given they still had plenty to play for in what was a second game in the group stage, not a dead rubber as the third game can be.
However, given your take on the match, I’ll have to watch it again, now!
PAULSTHROUGHBALL88 @11.12
Danny Hegan played late 60s early 70s…,if it’s Danny Regan, that certain DI
was he not in the 90s….assuming it is Blue Bloods.
BHOYJOEBELFAST
No, before that, seventies as I remember, DI Jack Regan, ” Right, mah saaan, Sweeney, you’re nicked!”
Two players who deserve to win a World cup,Messi and Modric.Sadly only one can.Does not stop them being legends.Did not stop Cruyf,Eusabio,Best,Jinky,Ronaldo. Many more who by reason of birth could never reach that pinnacle.

PAULSTHROUGHBALL88 @ 11:45 AM,
Ha! Ha! Wouldn’t wish that on anyone – the referee didn’t help England’s cause but they seem to have a very low threshold for gamesmanship and diving
That’s all part of the English game now and I think the officials have been good, hard but fair football.
Hail Hail

To all lurking England fans and Huns in here GIRFUY”
Implying that England and Huns are the same is a bit disappointing.
Of course their pundits and commentators go over the top but I would say that is the same for every nation on the planet.Even their seeming lack of awareness that England is only one of the four nations of the UK is understandable when you consider the numbers living in each of the four countries. Also, of course, we have to consider the simple fact that England was the only `home` country playing in the last eight.
Back to the Huns.
We KNOW what they are like and the `help` they get. I cannot say that England received such favourable treatment from the Ref last night.
Oh, I could go on but I think you get the gist……Huns are horrible . England are just like most nations.
International [Celtic theme]
1)First Celtic player to score at a WC game 1958?
2)This player gained 143 caps playing for his country,3 whilst playing for Celtic?
3)Most International goals while a Celtic player?

Superb :-))))
Before the semi-finals I intend to catch up on ‘The English’, a drama set in the final days of the settlement of the old west.
Probably been recommended already, it’s so good, and beautifully shot, at least from what I’ve already seen.
It’s BBC 2, so should be on i-player. Think it might have originally been shown on Amazon Prime.
Switched on SKy and they are showing the women’s Scottish Cup FInal between them and Hibs. 1-0 for them, and a beauty of a goal it was too. Must be the Beale effect.
Is there anything more ridiculous than male and female perfume adverts? That somehow the world of glamour, sex appeal and seduction will be yours with a wee spritz of scent.

After extensive research, (research extensive) I have discovered the French equivalent (equivalent francais)…
‘Joie Maligne’ (Suscitee par le malheur d’autrui)
Not to be confused with ‘Jo Malone Cologne’ an easy mistake to make it has to be said.
But I doubt it that smells any sweeter…..

Football fans have taken to social media to react to the news that popular streaming website Hesgoal has been banished by United States law enforcement authorities.
Piracy is an issue prevalent in sport with sites such as Hesgoal attracting “millions” of monthly visitors looking to stream live content for free. That is not an option today. Instead, visitors are welcomed by a seizure banner, displaying a stern warning of criminal prosecution to those attempting to access the homepage.
HESGOAL…APPARENTLY…Punters trying to access the Site could face 5 years in the Jail IF caught ?
