Just. Change. Nothing.

756

Can we all just agree to change nothing?  I know it was a dead rubber and I know it’s different playing against a 10 man defence, but honestly, just, change, nothing.

We had a defender at the right side of defence, not a frustrated winger.  That subtly rebalanced the team; Kristoffer Ajer (22) was not 20 yards further upfield to connect to a Mohamed Elyounoussi pass, but he was back to provide cover and balance to the two to his left.

Christopher Jullien and Shane Duffy had their most assured game together – although Shane, you were never winning that ball, you should have shown the player down the line instead of committing to the foul.  It was a mistake that would have been sore on another day.

David Turnbull (21) got one goal, one assist and got the assist for the penalty.  That is an incredible return for a player who has been sitting in the stand or out through illness all season.

After a couple of substitute appearances in 11 months at the club, Ismaila Soro (22) made his starting debut and was even more influential than Turnbull to the flow of Celtic’s play.  The deep lying central midfield player has several jobs: protect the defence, intercept opposition moves, get the ball forward quickly and accurately.  A lot of off the ball work is also required; the best in the business are in position to stop moves before an interception is required.  Ismaila did all of this very well.

Like Soro, the lack of opportunities afforded to Patryk Klimala (22) made me think he was less effective than our other strikers have been recently.  Apparently not.  Patryk is all about movement.  He can take a ball, bring others into play and – effectively last night – win corner kicks.  At no time did he try to beat three players on his own, take note, Odsonne.

After THAT pass at Tynecastle in 2019 you may have wondered what happened to Ewan Henderson (20).  The player had a lost 18 months but, like the rest of the midfield last night, he was on his game.  He was tidy and intelligent in possession.  Use him.

The biggest compliment to the midfield and defence is that Conor Hazard (22) had little to do.  Blameless at either goal, he got a foot to a dangerous ball, handled and distributed well throughout.

I don’t know who deserved the win more, the players, the manager or you and me, no doubt someone has been busy running a poll on the subject…..  Onto Sunday!

Celtic: Fifty Flags Plus One, an anthology of how Celtic won each of their league titles, is available now.  Starting with our first title in 1893, it details how Willie Maley brought consistent glory, then the sparse successes over four decades before Jock Stein arrived in 1965 and the more contemporary wins since.

It will rekindle memories you had forgotten and give insight into how the leagues were won.

  1. Timbhoy2 – “as for you wavy no wonder some players don’t make it at Celtic, with people like you..”

10 out of 10 players who don’t make it at Celtic report that they are utterly unaffected by the writings of Big Wavy, Timbhoy2 or any other opinionated poster on CQN. Fact.

We don’t matter fella. It’s just a laugh at the end of the day, away from real life.

I don’t think Klimala deserves to be dropped.

Would like to see him and Eddy up front together.

Thought Griffiths looked overweight again when he came on Sunday. I think we’ve seen the best of him.

  3. Hazard (I know it’ll finish Barkas, but CFC comes first)

    Ajer Julien Duffy Laxalt

With young Henderson to come on at some stage. Potentially Griffiths and wee Frimpong too

And still those votes keep rolling in with email number 67 not that far away. But could we beat all records and get close to 88? Thank you and, even if you’ve never (or rarely) voted before, please do make your views known. The names of your top 3 performers from last nights ‘glimmers of hope’ game to me before 10pm tonight. CQNPOTY@GMAIL.COM ;-)

  5. Hopefully last night will have had the same effect on the squad as it’s having on the blog (I don’t mean boring each other with talk about Brendan Rodgers leaving Celtic)

Most important for me was it showed how we might beat the Huns, which had previously killed any thought of us catching them stone dead. If there’s a steady improvement from last night in the next few weeks we shouldn’t be far short of at least having a decent chance there

We’ll go into the game clear underdogs playing a team in blue for the first time in a long time. Hopefully it’ll change the dynamic of the fixture, I predict a 5-1 victory again

  6. Glendalystonsils…………. Watching Sorro last night had me thinking why has it taken so long for me to see this Tasmanian Devil in action.

  7. glendalystonsils on

    Hankray .

Soro edged Turnbull inti second place in my 3 picks for Jobo last night . He’s exactly what we’ve needed all season .

  8. How many games does Soro need to play before posters spell his name correctly?

It’s just like the bloke Ronny Delia all over again :)

  9. St Tams – I’ll give you that

BSR – effort is often the greatest of all. Cards on the table, I really like the kid. Of all the strikers on our books, he’s shown the most application. That counts a lot for me – a ‘very lot’!

  10. So injuries to key players is not such a bad thing after all, especially if the key player/s is completely knackered and you have a bench full of genuine potential who have been sitting on the bench so long they all have splinters in their bums🙂

  11. Glendalystonsils…………it was a toss up between the two lads. It was young Turnbull for me, shading it with that classy winning strike. Perhaps now Scott Brown can take an occasional well earned rest.

  12. The hand of God on

Think NFL’s team selection for Kilmarnock will be one of the most discussed and important of the Season. If Turnbull and Soro dont start the calls for him to go will increase.Im pretty sure he will start both…the goalkeeper and the striker/s positions will be a big call I would like to see the Eddy/Griff partnership restored although Klimala did give everything last night something that Eddy rightly or wrongly has been accused of not giving recently.

  13. prestonpans bhoys on

We will find out on Sunday if the penny has dropped when Lenny picks his team. I have a suspicion he’ll go back to his old ways however if he has any sense then its his old guard that has failed him, well his tactics didn’t help either😠😕

  14. onenightinlisbon on

There should be no question about starting Soro and Turnbull and places in the squad for Henderson & Klimala. If he goes back to the old guard then we deserve all we get to be honest.

  15. Keep the same team for sunday, let the superstars learn that to play for Celtic FC you need to be committed and work hard for the team. Let the superstars wait till someone loses form, injury or suspension then you’ll get your chance, everything on merit from last night @ Celtic FC.

    CLUNKS on 11TH DECEMBER 2020 6:25 PM

I said that to my wife two hours ago, she replied ‘what’s for tea’😵😱

This is a good watch about the Jimmy Johnstone Academy at Cathkin Park.

The guy who made it is an English chap who is fascinated by football history and he has made a few good videos about Scottish football history with lots involving Celtic.

  21. See the Scottish Sun chose today to mention Jack Ross is “admired” by our Board and that Hibs won’t be “surprised” if an approach is made (with the usual quotes of him being happy where he is etc etc).

I am resigned to the fact that this will be the level of the Board’s ambition IF we lose a game in December. For that is all Lenny has, one loss and it’s over.

  22. My friends in Celtic,

If there’s to be a crowd at Parkhead on Sunday, I sincerely hope that every encouragement is given to our young guns.

Kilmarnock will be difficult to beat, but with honest endeavour and total commitment we will prevail.

There is still everything to play for and history awaits.

Are the supporters with them or do they prefer chasing buses.

Currently I can only speak for the supporters I work with and myself, but i know where we all stand.

HH to all. The journey continues.

  23. TOMMOCELT- I looked at it last week, and conversed with Auldheid, on the outside it looks like a vehicle with little punch, and controlled by Lawwell,no disrespect to anyone in the CT.Auldheid has some good ideas,to modernise it,and give it more teeth IMO

  24. Personally I’m convinced the league has gone and now its all about the rebuild, dreading seeing the hullaballoo when sevco clinch it, omg, but it will be less painful if we are doing a good job of the rebuild.

  25. !!BADA BING!! on 11TH DECEMBER 2020 6:52 PM

Thanks’ for that, I’m hoping for some vehicle to support that will get rid of Lawwell , the thought of him having some control of the Trust would tip me over the edge !!!

  26. prestonpans bhoys on

    Rock

Think if Lenny doesn’t go back to his old choices there’s a good chance of the 10.

Remember what Tavhun said last year, they were rolling over every one until teams started to attack them. Then they fell to bits with the pressure. A lot of the SPL teams they have played have been reduced to covid, even first sheep game they had no strikers, here’s hoping👍

  27. ST TAMS on 11TH DECEMBER 2020 5:27 PM

I like Klimala & think if he got the kind of pass into him that he likes, he’d score every week.

I didn’t notice Griff’s weight etc when he came on against St J but I’m now going back to look at the video again.

Two strikers yes, but Eddie even when he’s on his game looks lethargic. Recently, as they say round these parts, he often looks like his feet are in a barrel of molasses.

  28. TOMMOCELT- I think in their constitution, is you can’t criticize the Club publicly, I’m sure someone can correct me…

  30. Bada Bing/TommoCelt

I don’t believe it is the case that the Celtic Trust is controlled by Celtic/Lawwell. It is an independent body. The CSA (Celtic Supporters” Association)’s constitution, however, does have a restriction on criticising Celtic.
