Just. Change. Nothing.

756

Can we all just agree to change nothing?  I know it was a dead rubber and I know it’s different playing against a 10 man defence, but honestly, just, change, nothing.

We had a defender at the right side of defence, not a frustrated winger.  That subtly rebalanced the team; Kristoffer Ajer (22) was not 20 yards further upfield to connect to a Mohamed Elyounoussi pass, but he was back to provide cover and balance to the two to his left.

Christopher Jullien and Shane Duffy had their most assured game together – although Shane, you were never winning that ball, you should have shown the player down the line instead of committing to the foul.  It was a mistake that would have been sore on another day.

David Turnbull (21) got one goal, one assist and got the assist for the penalty.  That is an incredible return for a player who has been sitting in the stand or out through illness all season.

After a couple of substitute appearances in 11 months at the club, Ismaila Soro (22) made his starting debut and was even more influential than Turnbull to the flow of Celtic’s play.  The deep lying central midfield player has several jobs: protect the defence, intercept opposition moves, get the ball forward quickly and accurately.  A lot of off the ball work is also required; the best in the business are in position to stop moves before an interception is required.  Ismaila did all of this very well.

Like Soro, the lack of opportunities afforded to Patryk Klimala (22) made me think he was less effective than our other strikers have been recently.  Apparently not.  Patryk is all about movement.  He can take a ball, bring others into play and – effectively last night – win corner kicks.  At no time did he try to beat three players on his own, take note, Odsonne.

After THAT pass at Tynecastle in 2019 you may have wondered what happened to Ewan Henderson (20).  The player had a lost 18 months but, like the rest of the midfield last night, he was on his game.  He was tidy and intelligent in possession.  Use him.

The biggest compliment to the midfield and defence is that Conor Hazard (22) had little to do.  Blameless at either goal, he got a foot to a dangerous ball, handled and distributed well throughout.

I don’t know who deserved the win more, the players, the manager or you and me, no doubt someone has been busy running a poll on the subject…..  Onto Sunday!

Celtic: Fifty Flags Plus One, an anthology of how Celtic won each of their league titles, is available now.  Starting with our first title in 1893, it details how Willie Maley brought consistent glory, then the sparse successes over four decades before Jock Stein arrived in 1965 and the more contemporary wins since.

It will rekindle memories you had forgotten and give insight into how the leagues were won.

Fair point, but the amount of things we have to get right to get back in the race – they are just too many things going wrong at the same time – and apart from last night show little signs of correcting themselves, to add to that the no fan thing removed all the pressure from then – when the fans were there the ball was like a hot potato – now they have no fear. Still, would love to be wrong but can’t see it.

  2. One game at a time territory now.

    Play well, keep your place.

    Not so good, get dropped.

    Simples.

And Neil my man, have the humility to keep that midfield tight, even against the ‘lesser lights’.

I am still a believer in the 10. We are where we are. We know what needs changed. We have no power to do it right now. Build something. Put money where mouths are. The CST is at least a ready made vehicle to build on. I think that is the pony to back, the wheel we don’t need to reinvent but perhaps need to put some new design into. I’ve put my few shillings in and would encourage others to do likewise. You watch what happens if there is decent momentum there. The powers that be will start to feel the pressure.

Just as the sevvies will be under serious pressure if we manage to recover any league form at all. Momentum boys, momentum. Let us build some.

  3. FD- thanks,I think the last few weeks has proved, the fans need a body to challenge the Board on any number of issues, R 12 ,5WA etc HH

  4. Brown is a legend as far as I’m concerned

    But unfortunately age catches up

Milner at Liverpool is handled the way an ageing captain should be

    With the utmost respect 🍀

  5. A commanding goalkeeper is required, without which nothing will be achieved with any level of consistency.

Der hun are a one year wonder.

  6. Just over 2 hours until the results come out so I really should start reading the 75+ emails that are already in the Inbox. But keep them coming bhoys and ghirls, posters and lurkers alike ;-) CQNPOTY@GMAIL.COM

  7. Surely Hazard on Sunday!

Why risk Bain or Barkas who are playing poorly in the hope either one turns it around?

    Hazard has no skeletons!

    Play him!

Along with Soro and Turnbull and Henderson.

    Of course!

Hopefully last night will have had the same effect on the squad as it’s having on the blog (I don’t mean boring each other with talk about Brendan Rodgers leaving Celtic)

    WEEELLLL!!! That’s kinda intersting!?

What gives you the impression that Lawwell controls the Celtic Trust?

  10. The goalie position is up for grabs. Hazard is a hazard.

Surely it would take the CST years to build up the kind of shareholding that would carry any clout? Don’t wish to sound negative but one of the things which would stop me committing to them would be that we don’t have years . Change is needed now.

  12. Ernie- I could have phrased it better, but if I’m right, and you can’t publicly criticize the Board, it’s controlled to an extent by the Club IMO

  13. The CST have no fecking money. As much as our world shouldnt measure worth in material terms, guess what?

It seems to have provoked a Pavlovian response that’s lasted a couple of days and what could prove to be a very important football match.

Presumably because that might drive down the share price, which would be a bit naughty as one of the Trust’s stated aims is to buy those shares.

Not that anyone bothered about such niceties when King was doing it.

  16. prestonpans bhoys on

On the goalie front, our bhoy Hazard only had one save to make, would Barkas save it who knows. In all fairness Hazard should be played as he was preferred to the others against a superior opposition.

But I’m with Turkeybhoy we might have a different opinion ofif Barkas if he has a solid defence in front of him.

  18. Dialled into the Celtic Trust Zoom meeting on Saturday

Rest assured there was plenty criticism of the board

Including its total reluctance to communicate with such groups of fans

They have absolutely no allegiance to PL

The Trust is trying to build membership to buy shares, through such, with shares belonging to every member

Individual shareholders in the future can hopefully also give the trust their voting rights, if agreed to

The trust is currently trying to assist iin tracing many thousands of shareholders who have been lost and having no contact, many since the original share issue, who may have changed address or passed onto family etc

Probably around 30% of current shareholding never utilise their right to participate and vote on issues

    They hope to change this

And as previous build own shareholding, to try and influence direction of the club

That’s some of what I took from the Sat Zoom call

Knowing a few involved in the committee

Don’t think they will shirk from challenging the board, or Peter

And yes I am a member – attending first meeting on Saturday ( through Zoom) where at one point there was 302 fans on the call

  19. PRESTONPANS BHOYS on 11TH DECEMBER 2020 8:34 PM

Barkas has more or less the same defence in front of him as Fraser Forster did.

Does an iffy defence bring panic to the keeper or does an iffy keeper bring panic to the defence?

  20. I already mentioned that the Celtic Trust is an independent body, and is categorically not controlled by Celtic/Lawwell. Accepted that it will surely take time to accumulate shares/proxies, but it is not a requirement to be a shareholder to join. The current push is to promote membership where it can be demonstrated that xyz number of members can present a collective voice in communication with Celtic. Isn’t that what the majority of us want?

    HH

  21. With the Celtic trust the fans could have a voice .,especially at the AGM,The real shysters is The Celtic Supporters Association and The Celtic Affilation ,and The Irish Mob,Lawell has them in his pocket, they are well looked after with Home and Away tickets being never a problem, look after all the fans you creeps, talk about corruption going on with other clubs add Celtic Football Club to the list.

  26. With the AGM on Monday ,for those still wondering what the situation with Resolution 11/12 is, it is all explained and more on this Celtic Star interview.

    https://thecelticstar.com/celtic-agm-special-auldheid-on-moral-hazard-and-the-res12-hod-carriers-bowing-out/

In essence Res12 has morphed into how rules were avoided to produce what is now taken as reality, a reality that if “Rangers” stop 10iar will see “going for 55” rammed down your throats because Celtic allowed it to happen. They had the opportunity to challenge twice but didn’t.

The undoing of what legitimised the ebt titles won by “Rangers” will totally depend on how much the Celtic support want it to happen and CST willingness to become the means of ensuring it does.

  27. If I was Peter Lawwell I’d want the “wantaways” in the shop window EVERY game. Turnbull, Soro, Henderson and Klimalla can play out their skins but they won’t be displacing the usual suspects if it’s going to affect their sell on price. Dems da facts

Only concerned about Celtic , not the huns . You may be right , that they have poured everything into this one season , but with proper leadership we should have been fireproofed against that . We need to completely refresh our own sense of direction .

  29. Hello again all you young rebels.

Hot weekend ahead, my new Celtic tops are out ready for a trip down

Amazing how a Celtic team playing with the same passion as the

Our CSC have organised the Christmas lunch this year for next week

Have a look at the interview on Celtic Star.

You can make up your mind after the AGM depending on Celtic’s response to shareholder requests for clarification & concerns of trust and hear/see what the CST think.

My view (in the article) is that the restoration of trust should be a top priority for both CST and the Board (and the vehicle for doing so is CST following up on aftermath of Res12.)

Samples of two e mail requests are at

  32. A rarity from me a post about “players”

Sometimes I see a guy perform for the first time and think “player”. Of course that is just a reflection of what I think makes a player ie the attributes on show.

When I saw Christie play for ICT v us I thought “player” because he combined energy with a decent level of skill but his physique was against him. He bulked up at Aberdeen, must have been the Aberdeen Angus steaks, and when he got his chance v Hearts took it. His corner kick delivery is not the best, he seldom gets the trajectory right but until last night only Lee Griffiths was better and often not available but his o ther attributes far outweigh his main failing.

When I first noticed Henderson it was in a game v Hearts when the ball came to him from our box being cleared from Hearts corner. It was the calm way he took the ball under pressure and played a brilliant pass that set free Sinclair ( I think ) and Forrest haring forward to score. Other things like playing a pas early had me thinking “player”. Like Christie a bigger helping of steak should make him a first teamer.

I cannot recall a specific moment when I thought Ajer would be a player but over time he did stuff that took him out of the “ok” category into player. His brave run last might was reminiscent of another one v Motherwell ata crucial point and I just dont understand the flack he gets from some quarters, especially as he is filling a gap he shouldn’t have to and would be the “player” I think is there if played midfield or even an attacking RB since the midfield now has new contenders for places.

I liked what I saw of Turnbull at Motherwell another “player” in my judgement. When he come on v St J the way he took a pass and turned the defender at his back then nearly put Griffiths through had me commenting here. A “player”.

To a slightly lesser degree I think there is a “player” in Laxalt . If he improves his crossing from the left he might not be another Tierny but will become a “player”.

On Tierney I couldn’t believe the first time I saw him play just how good he was, but a couple of games in he was alreday a “player”.

Funnily enough I never got that feeling with McGregor who was slow to catch the eye and he has done lots to merit being a “player” but he should be relieved of any defensive duties and played far enough forward with crowding the CF’s to be more of a threat to their goal than to ours when he mis passes or loses a tussle for the ball and surrenders possesion.

Last night was my first real look at Sorro and based on that alone he is in the same category as I put Tierney in first time I saw him. If he turns out the same over next few games we have won an Ivory watch.

Frimpong looked a “player” but Scottish players seem to think so too and use him as a football, but if he were to get better protection from referees who should red card the first bad foul on him, he might become the “player” that is in him.

Cannot think of any more although I thought Griffiths a “player” at Hibs and delighted we bought him.

I also like James Forrest and consider him a “player” and I think on typing this that what I mean by player is someone who when they get the ball it is always possible something good /exciting will result.
