Justice and our debt to Hillsborough

352

Justice 30 years later is scarcely justice at all, but those employed in the criminal justice system in May 1985, leading to the death of 96 Liverpool fans died at the Hillsborough Disaster, now face proper scrutiny for their actions. Charges have been brought against former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield of South Yorkshire Police, who was match commander on the day, as well as five others.

Included in that number is former Chief Inspector Norman Bettison, charged with allegedly lying about what happened on the day. A subsequent inquiry into the disaster found that a conspiracy to blame dead and innocent fans, while deflecting from the actions of the police, took place.

Duckenfield is charged with the manslaughter of 95 victims. Then-Sheffield Wednesday secretary, Graham Mackrell, is accused of breaching Health and Safety regulations. South Yorkshire Police’s solicitor, Peter Metcalf, is charged with perverting the course of justice, as are two other senior former-police officers, Donald Denton and Alan Foster.

There is a long way to go before convictions are secured, but the dogged determination of campaigners and bereaved over three decades is remarkable.

I could add that irresponsible attitudes towards Health and Safety at football grounds, and policing cover-ups, was endemic prior to Hillsborough. Our game changed because of this tragedy as those closely involved were determined to ensure it would. We have a safer game and better-ordered society as a result.

No worries – just interested as when there was no team using the name ‘Rangers’ for a few years we were ~1/25 or so before a ball was kicked.

Last season before a ball was kicked we were 1/3.

Be interested to see, even though they are only 3rd best in league, if the same pricing policy is in effect.

Just proves the bookies don’t always ‘get it right’. Last season was the biggest winning margin for a good few years.

I’ve sat in the Rangers end at Ibrox twice. Once in 82 when they were playing Aberdeen and my mate and I were on instruction from the girls not to get pished.

    *************

Only done that the once. Swore I’d never go back to a game involving thems after the 2-3 SC Final, Forsyth’s pile-driver from 3 inches.

Then some years later whilst a mature ( no laughing) student at Paisley College of Technology & Marxism I was persuaded by 2 mhates, O’DONNELL and Donnelly, to go along to Ipox as it was bound to be a scoosh – after all their greatest thug/player was manager and was hopeless, as was his team. The only thing was O’Donnell & Donnelly had tickets for the Celtic end and gave me a ticket for the Hun end of the stand opposite the main stand. All was relatively quiet until we scored – think it was half way through the first half. Instinct takes over and you jump out of your seat….. ooops… but wait so did dozens of other undercover tims. And then dozens more joined in. The stewards quickly moved in and ejected us into the Celtic end of said stand, for ” our own safety “! Squashed to bits we were but fair enjoyed the rest of the game. We murdered them 2-0, going on 10. Tommy Burns was immense that day. “Greig Must Stay” was the most popular chant. Must have been ’81/82?

Met up with O’Donnell and Donnelly after the game who had a good laugh at my expense. Reason there were so many of their tickets available was that their greatest ever was producing an even bigger load of shoite on the park than hitherto thought possible. Against my better judgement we took a bus back into town. Cue telegraph pole getting thrown through the windae.

There’s quite a lot in that short phrase you wrote MMcG. I had a long conversation with a current AJ employee over the weekend actually. He spent more time looking over his own shoulders than he did looking at me while we were talking. I’m no oil painting, but I did have the distinct impression that it wasn’t my looks that were the issue…

Incidentally, I’m not on to get involved in discussing the politics of the region or situation here because I don’t know enough about it to speak knowledgably, I do listen a lot but I’ve only been in this and similar regions for just under 10 years and that’s not enough time to understand it all. Actually I just thought I’d share some thoughts as the essence of it all is interesting, to me anyway.

Sometimes for example your enemy’s enemy is your friend, and sometimes he is a worse enemy than your original enemy because at some point he could become your enemy’s friend again, and he knows what you know. Your enemy’s friend needn’t necessarily be your enemy too however…

The last American outlet closed in April although you can still get it if you know how. IPTV usually. Stumbled into this while getting free Celtic games live. They dont like the BBC either. 13. Not too concerned about the lack of signings just yet but I’m hoping if there is only one more addition to our squad he is of similar pedigree to Sinclair or Dembele and would be disappointed if he wasn’t.

Areas in the team that could be improved IMO are DM – an enforcer to help the backline,Kouassi could be that man ,time will tell. Looked a bit short of the physical stuff at times in the mid last season.

AM- Armstrong has improved out of sight and is a very good player but I think there is room for improvement there. Likes of Bojan is a step up IMO.

I also think that Hayes at his age/stage in his career ( he knows he’s a lucky bhoy ) will be a good addition.

All that said ,In Brendan I trust

If its one player, it will be a good one.

Also, ive said about Stuart Armstrong, one season doesnt make you a superstar. If he rests on his laurels, that would be unwise imo.

And now….doing my Sherlock Holmes. If we are only signing one player, who is it most likely to be?

I conclude, that the most likely, is Patrick Roberts:)

    Lets see.

  16. Glad to see celtic not taking tickets for linfield , life is more precious , and linfield , Sevco , no matter they are the same rotten lot . With regards the team , I think I’m the only one who wishes we had more quality brought into the team and settled for Europe , as later on we could get a tough draw , as it stands at the moment , we are weaker than we were at the end of the season .

Finally for the betting guys , get your money on a good result for Sevco in court 2 next Wednesday , a cert

Was interested to read that although the CPS intends to prosecute six of those involved at Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday is not among them. Sue Hemming, head of Special Crime etc at the CPS is reported to have said that Sheffield Wednesday could not face charges as a ‘legal entity’ as it “only now exists on paper”. Now, according to Companies House Sheffield Wednesday was incorporated in June 1990 (2509978) as, and you will like this one, ‘Middlewood Development Co. Ltd’ addressed with a Law Co. based in the City of London’. This was just over one year after the Sheffield Disaster. And to what purpose we may well ask, and the Co. Ltd. part may well give us the answer. In 1997 the company’s name was changed to, you guessed it,

Sheffield Wednesday FC Ltd. Some among us, myself included, might conclude that the Incorporation of Sheffield Wednesday in 1990 was an attempt to avoid, or perhaps evade even, subsequent criminal or civil actions related to the 96 deaths in 1989. Or then again maybe not.

  18. God bless the 96 and their families, hopefully the families can find peace within themselves and move forward after these trials.

Still no accountability for the MSM who created a narrative to defame the Liverpool supporters actions that day built on false allegations . Which is a shameful indictment on the legal system .
