Justice and our debt to Hillsborough

352

Justice 30 years later is scarcely justice at all, but those employed in the criminal justice system in May 1985, leading to the death of 96 Liverpool fans died at the Hillsborough Disaster, now face proper scrutiny for their actions. Charges have been brought against former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield of South Yorkshire Police, who was match commander on the day, as well as five others.

Included in that number is former Chief Inspector Norman Bettison, charged with allegedly lying about what happened on the day. A subsequent inquiry into the disaster found that a conspiracy to blame dead and innocent fans, while deflecting from the actions of the police, took place.

Duckenfield is charged with the manslaughter of 95 victims. Then-Sheffield Wednesday secretary, Graham Mackrell, is accused of breaching Health and Safety regulations. South Yorkshire Police’s solicitor, Peter Metcalf, is charged with perverting the course of justice, as are two other senior former-police officers, Donald Denton and Alan Foster.

There is a long way to go before convictions are secured, but the dogged determination of campaigners and bereaved over three decades is remarkable.

I could add that irresponsible attitudes towards Health and Safety at football grounds, and policing cover-ups, was endemic prior to Hillsborough. Our game changed because of this tragedy as those closely involved were determined to ensure it would. We have a safer game and better-ordered society as a result.

  1. Why are those folk sitting at a long table at the edge of the pitch ?

I keep waiting on them to raise there score cards aka 8.7 8.9 6..0 7.8. etc every time someone makes a decent pass

  2. Great touch from wee Jamsey for the goal, decent run out, but and always the but….WTF is the excuse for pre season shite, these are top of the range athletes, they have had at most a couple of weeks off, yet the excuses are being trotted out to beat the band for below par performances, can’t get the head around it, never have, never will.

  5. TET at 7:21. It’s a friendly, a pre-season friendly at that. I hate them. Last one I attended was Bobby Charlton’s at Old Trafford when Kenny & wee Lou were passing to each other in the 6 yard line rather than spoil the occasion….. then Big Billy passed the ball to Bobby C 20 yards out with 5 mins to go only for BC to fluff his lines and hit row Z instead.

Shouldn’t give a toss about these games, but we do.

  6. Oh, forgot about Packy’s testimonial which was also Paul Elliot’s send-off. Took a young Muslim lad who is now a life-long Celt.

I don’t give a feck about these games either, I just think the excuses for playing crap is just that, excuses, at most our top players will have had a couple of weeks off, there is no excuse for them not playing at the top of their game none at all.

I am not just talking about Celtic here, all teams are the same, pre season excuses for playing crap, they are blessed football is a team game and not an individual sport.

  10. That 4-1 game was almost as good as the season before where we went to Sunderland and Big Yogi ran amok. I think we won 5-1. I was about 15 and thrilled that I was on the same train as the whole Celtic contingent, including Charles Patrick Tully, coming home.

Typical first pre-season friendly. Different XIs at beginning and end of match. More about getting match minutes plus team formation, passing and movement right than exciting, incisive football.

Good to get the win and a clean sheet, and lucky to have no injuries despite the industrial 1st half handling of Griffiths and Hayes. With Gordon, Dembele, Ajer, Kouassi and Rogic still to feature, it will likely be much the same for the next two friendlies before something approaching a settled line up v Shamrock Rovers before the CL away tie.
