Justice and our debt to Hillsborough

352

Justice 30 years later is scarcely justice at all, but those employed in the criminal justice system in May 1985, leading to the death of 96 Liverpool fans died at the Hillsborough Disaster, now face proper scrutiny for their actions. Charges have been brought against former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield of South Yorkshire Police, who was match commander on the day, as well as five others.

Included in that number is former Chief Inspector Norman Bettison, charged with allegedly lying about what happened on the day. A subsequent inquiry into the disaster found that a conspiracy to blame dead and innocent fans, while deflecting from the actions of the police, took place.

Duckenfield is charged with the manslaughter of 95 victims. Then-Sheffield Wednesday secretary, Graham Mackrell, is accused of breaching Health and Safety regulations. South Yorkshire Police’s solicitor, Peter Metcalf, is charged with perverting the course of justice, as are two other senior former-police officers, Donald Denton and Alan Foster.

There is a long way to go before convictions are secured, but the dogged determination of campaigners and bereaved over three decades is remarkable.

I could add that irresponsible attitudes towards Health and Safety at football grounds, and policing cover-ups, was endemic prior to Hillsborough. Our game changed because of this tragedy as those closely involved were determined to ensure it would. We have a safer game and better-ordered society as a result.

I haven’t been on the blog for a wee while due to work and other things.

However, I thought I would let everyone know that there is a large write-up in this month’s Irish Voice Newspaper highlighting our Lisbon adventures.

Good photos of Old Tim, BlantyreTim, Ritchie, DD, and yours truly plus quotes from Kickinthenakas, Morrissey23rd and more than the odd reference to Connaire12.

The article isn’t available in digital form yet but once it is I will post a link.

Meanwhile, if you want to subscribe to the voice just google it and give your details. It is a free paper and contains a lot of news about the Irish in Scotland and news from Ireland or with an Irish perspective.

Needless to say, it is run by a couple of season ticket holders.

And with that, I will say goodnight. Another graduation tomorrow.

  14. Mixed bag of emotions tonight.

The Hillsborough Manslaughter Co finally seeing justice creep up on them. Linfield almost blowing their home advantage.

The Invincibles kicking off the new season.

And Celtic miraculously refunding my ST deposits without me even picking up the phone! It certainly helped me get over the shock and disappointment at finding out that we’re really only going for 3 in a row!

Why don’t all those who are determined to go to Belfast go to this away leg and roar on the Mariners to victory. Then you can go back and support the hoops in the same venue – in safety!

  15. Aiden McGeady is a very good player, with 80 odd caps, two footed, can score too.Could play on either wing or behind a main striker which makes him very versatile.

We wouldn’t be paying him EPL wages as I would suggest he has made a fair wad already and would probably be happy on wages similar to SS.

He’s just had a really good season with PNE, granted he didn’t show well for Everton but there could be a myriad of reasons as to why that happened.

First choice would be Roberts but McGeady would be a great alternative .

Anyway that’s just my view, what if we don’t get Paddy? Who are the players we should go for?

  16. I think that there is great potential for trouble when we go to Sunderland.

Previous visits the the NE of England have bordered on riots.

There was a full scale pitch invasion in Middlesbrough .

There was several attacks on Celtic fans in and around Newcastle the last time we were there.

Nothing to be gained ,by this fixture IMHO.

Why are Celtic accepting tickets for this and not Linfield?

If Celtic supporters genuinely step back and listen to the experience of their fellow Tims and also consider how frequently the PSNI deal with such situations then I’d hope they’d realise and appreciate how dangerous Celtic’s decision to refuse tickets really is.

  18. I was at the Peter Beardsley at St James and while we didn’t get welcomed by the locals I didn’t see any bother.

It was a great day out , pubs rammed with Celtic fans. Remember being in the pub and a geordie dj mention the 5- 1 game ( Lubos debut I think ) v the huns and the place erupted . Big singsong, dancing on the tables and this was before the game

  19. I was listening to the Brendan’s interview on Celtic TV. He said he wants one more player just now, i think that given we have been back one week and nothing has materialised that transfer may not happen now. You would think with the Qualifiers on the horizon the deal would be as good as done if it is on.

He also said he had an eye on the English market for later in the window. What he said was basically a description of Roberts situation. Players will come back for pre season and go on a training camp, and that by the beginning of August the Clubs will know what players they want and don’t want. The smart money would suggest he has an eye on Roberts and Bojan and maybe one or two others.

As it stands it looks like we may need to negotiate rounds 1 and 2 of the Qualifiers with the squad we have at present.
