Juve let heart rule the head

430

Were you impressed by how smartly Juventus opened last night, pressing Barcelona into conceding a corner?  It was an ambitious opening.  In the days after we beat Barcelona in 2012 one journalist took all sorts of abuse online for recoiling against the suggestion Celtic put on a ‘brave’ performance.

He conceded Celtic’s was a brilliant performance, but defending your 18 yard line was more sensible than brave.  What Juventus did last night, pressing Barcelona, leaving space at the back, was brave.  It was foolish too.

Juventus are a remarkable team and have just completed one of the best seasons in their history.  They had a right to think they could have a go at Barcelona.  They came close too, for a while after they equalised Barca were penned back, but the game turned when Lionel Messi found 50 yards of space ahead of him.  You can’t leave Messi with that sort of freedom.

Three minutes into the game Juventus fans would have been encouraged, they had already forced Barca back and made an attempt at goal but the cost of all this expansionism was space in their own box.  Even this great Juventus team should have gone into yesterday’s game knowing their limitations.

If they played within them, were they good enough to sneak a win against Barcelona?  Quite possibly.

South of Tunis, thanks for the reply.

Mihajlovic was a dreadful defender, just booted people who got by him. He was as bad a defender as that LeBeouf who was at Chelsea and the big Potugese guy, Fernando Couto?, who was at Parma and Lazio. I think if he was at Lazio he would have played with Mihajlovic.

Apart from having a good left foot, I could never see anything that allowed him a career as a professional footballer. Slow, arrogant, one footed, bad positional sense , bad attitude, the list could go on.

No bother it’s Wikipedia stuff, my word is what my mother told me, and being a very devout Catholic she couldn’t lie, unlike my good self who isn’t the best Catholic and could probably beat Jeremy Kyles lie detector

South of Tunis, the way of football, not the best of players have won trophies but some far better players win nothing or very little.

Its hard to believe Lubo had won hee haw prior to him playing for us. Lubo was one of Zidane’s footballing heroes when he was growing up.

I had forgotten Couto was at Barcelona for a spell.

Thanks for the update on what he won.

Couto and Mihajlovic in the one team and they won the league, wow.

Are you seriously comparing what Juventus did to us at Celtic Park with that shower of rogues like Racing Club etc?

I am at work just now and was having a quick look back but couldn’t let that comment pass.

A sad state of affairs at Ibrox that their players couldn’t even go out with a girl who was a Catholic.

They had a player, Jim Denny, who married a Catholic and he said years later, he put that down as the reason why they let him go.

  10. I heard from my mate who worked with Colin Jackson for years about a month ago that he was very poorly and didn’t have long to go. I met Colin many times over the years. He was an absolute gentleman and we joked back and forth about the OF.

He told me that when Murdo made it 4-2 in 1979 he went up to him at the end and said “Thanks for scoring. You’ll be on my Christmas card list for ever”.

His son is a big Celtic fan BTW.

RIP Colin. One of life’s gentleman.

I think they binned Gordon Daziel when he was their top goalscorer, don’t think big Jock Wallace was too, happy about the ceremony being in a chapel

  15. Funny how times move on, I said to my son, sad about Colin Jackson passing on, first thing he says is “jeez the Welsh hurdler.” Different times,

Agree Colin was from the old school, when they were all mates, whatever the background.

Many thanks for the kind words especially regarding Aidan who would have been 39 on 3July.Dreadful thing for any family , but what can you do ? Peshes me off when I see people getting uptight about trivial things in life. Aidan and Brendan are the cousins of Big Kev, pal of our Antipodean Red poster. A great nephew indeed.

Gerry, you certainly knew where the net was, which was good for me as I was a poor loser at football. Still am, and hate when the Hoops lose.

  24. Not long in from the Ireland game. Poor match and given the opposition, poor atmosphere. My seat is in the singing section but there was little to sing about and second half was very quiet from both sets of fans. Booing of Sterling was for his contract stance, not the club team he plays for, from what I could gather.

Let’s hope next Saturday’s match will be a more memorable occasion. COYBIG

    Champions League Qualifiers Latest …

So the final slot in the CL qualifying stages is taken by Poznan from Poland. They pipped Legia Warsaw who will play in the Europa League :-)

Could play Poznan in theory in the Play Off matches – the only fixture played with both sets of fans with backs to the pitch !!

We will find out 2 weeks tomorrow who our 2nd round opponents will be. As last year I would expect UEFA to regionalise that round so our possible opponents could be from Ireland, Wales, Iceland, Luxembourg, Andorra or Malta (Hi Zico !) depending on the results of the 3 first round matches.

Also interesting that in the group stages, Pot 1 is now allocated to the winners of the 7 top rated leagues plus the CL winners. As Barca are already there, this means that the eighth rated (Holland) team makes up the pot.

This means that Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd will all feature in Pot 2.

I suppose we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it !!
