Juve think they got a lucky draw but are scared of Celtic Park

1106

Juventus’ closest journalist gave their fans a preview of what The Old Lady can expect next week.  Apparently, Juve were lucky drawing Celtic, who are not the same as the team who beat them 4-3 11 seasons ago (but didn’t qualify for the knock out stage).

The outcome of the second leg is a formality, but Celtic Park has them spooked:

“Juventus got a benign [Champions League] draw, even lucky.

“The Bhoys are not the same team who beat Juventus 4-3 a few years ago.  They have a few gems, like [Tony] Watt, but bet everything on physical and dead-ball football.  Celtic Park is absolutely extraordinary, it goes beyond what you can write, read or tell.  What you see on television is not even the smallest part of what you endure in the flesh, 60,000 people do not offend you but make you know you are in the enemy camp.

“The Park is one of the most influential and dangerous stages in the world.  It has everything to challenge you, to induce the classic ‘bad day’, to give you stomach cramps and the need to get out as soon as possible.  The fact Celtic beat Barcelona there was not random.

“Common sense suggests Celtic cannot beat Barcelona but football said different.  They did with merit, playing beyond their means and with a little luck.  This is what Juventus will need to be wary of.

“Antonio Conte will hammer into his players not to underestimate their opponents, but for once it is not the team, it’s the stadium the need to worry about.

“Forget folklore images of children wearing green and white scarves, or of fans coming out of Scottish pubs and going to the game by finishing a beer and ordering another.  Don’t let the chorus of ‘You’ll never walk alone’ charm you if you have not heard it with your own ears.  To watch from your HD TV is one thing, be there for 90 minutes, start to finish, ever if you’re winning, is different.

“Celtic are different than usual teams.  Juventus fans, if they behave the way they should and live this adventure the right way, will have a great experience.  The Juventus Stadium can be a bit like Celtic Park.  We Italians miss their culture, their history, their being able to accept any defeat and celebrate every possible outcome, accepting any opponent.  Their team will be sacred of Juventus but their stadium and fans will not say the same thing.”

We’ll play our part on Tuesday but I am sure Neil Lennon and his players will be pleased to hear they are considered something of a sideshow.  The victory over Barcelona was a magnificent but it was achieved as a result of a tactical master-plan, nothing less. It’s the men in green and white hoops Juve need to watch.

Actually quite popular out here in Italy!

…but we dont tend to put it in our pasta sauces!

Best fried or grilled – or so I am led to believe.

    Never actually tried it.

Rabbit is a particular favourite of mine!

Washed down with a fine red wine of course!

    Thank you ! .

My elderly Inter supporting neighbor regularly tells me that retired Italian Referees are curiously prone to retiring to a country which has no extradition treaty with Italy . A ” fact ” I’ve never been able to confirm . I tell him things like – I Googled that and couldn’t find anything- to which he replies – Computers don’t know everything

  6. “it is not the team, it’s the stadium the need to worry about.” says the journalist.

No mention of the skill and tenacity of the players, their togetherness with each other, the management and the fans.

It echoes the comment of the Crespo in 1967 “Football was the winner today.”

Like football was some ephemeral spirit disembodied and unconnected to the men of the day.

Crespo was not gracious enough to say what he knew – CELTIC won. Playing the most breathtaking, attacking football he had ever witnessed. In the process destroying the myth of invincibility that he had built around catennacio. as he was told they would.

For me it’s encouraging that the Italian attitude is still to shy away from giving due credit to our players and management, and instead focus on external irrelevances.

I do agree with one thing the journalist says – we’re far better singers than them. The ’67 game started with a song in the tunnel and we’ve been givin it laldy ever since.

    Bring them on.

  7. Up here the weather is supposed to ease up come this evening..but the place is a shambles..hundreds of flights delayed out of toronto..I don’t think new york is quite as bad…this storm is good one….

It’s not horse meat I’m worried about.

It’s the cow’s lips, udders and other minging parts that legally go into sausages, burgers and other alledgedly edible meat products sold by your butcher or Tesco’s et al.

The snow should be over by Saturday night, could anywhere from 6″ to 3′ depending where you live, a chance of rain/snow Monday but the rest of the week should be normal for this time of year, and that’s why I now live in Florida.

There is a great street corner grill in an ” interesting ” part of Catania.

Owner / cook is a Tony Soprano look a like who wears a manky sleeveless vest and cooks with a fag in his mouth and a big bottle of Heineken to hand.

Place is mega popular Queued out 6 nights a week . Remember being there one night when a frail old man [ accompanied by a gorilla in a pinstriped Armani suit ] pulled up in a Hummer —– the crowd /the queue parted . The old man was served immediately . The old man didn’t pay.

Celtic are again playing an early game after a week of international matches. This situation has proved difficult in the past but hopefully the players will be up for it.

A wee thought on the Rangers winding-up order.

It appears that the money was paid to C Green in order to fund his takeover, whatever,of the remnants from D&P.

So why has this been charged to RFC,or whatever they are known as now?

Maybe Jabba is right-the bill as presented is wrong. But only inasmuch as it should be addressed to Green personally.

    Thoughts,anyone?

  20. Philbhoy wishes us buon appetito with his informative “It’s the cow’s lips, udders and other minging parts that legally go into sausages”.

As the build up to the Juve game approaches and we gradually get written off by everyone, it makes me recall the last time we played the might Juve at Celtic park- Goals galore and victory for the Jungle jims, Im sure most Celtic fans who were there will never forget it.

I wasn’t there though. I was in mid air during the match en route to Beijing and struggling to get news of the score. On arrival in my hotel I repeatedly scanned the channels to trY to find out if I has Sky sport or similar, most if not all the channels were in Chinese, as you might imagine, Then lo and behold as if by magic, during a channel hopping session the Celts appear and to my great delight I see Sutton and co banging goals in for fun while a Chinese commentator is going crazy,

However when the news report ended, I still didn’t know if we won or lost in my excitement at seeing each goal go in (and a few for the Italians as well!) I still didn’t know the score, I had bloody lost count in the excitement…

Anyone take more of the same this week?

  22. Just heard report on the horse eat being found in the findus lasagne.

Apparently the horsemeat was first put into the ingredient from October, so it wasn’t in it furlong. :))

I’ve just had a look at the governments e-petition site to see how der huns petition was coming along (not very well btw).

Anyway I found this in amounst some other wee gems:

“Sectarianism’ and the Anti-English culture of Irish football clubs in Glasgow and ‘Sectarianism’.

Responsible department: Department for Culture, Media and Sport

In support of the ideal that the mere Anti-English culture of Irish football clubs in Glasgow (i.e. Rangers/Celtic) is not misrepresented as ‘sectarianism’ by political opportunists hoping to distract Scots from their own legitimate Anti-Scots culture all English football clubs should be banned from competing against them until they agree to wear St. George’s Crosses and Shamrocks on both their strips”

Your post kept an amazing alcoholic quiet for 10 minutes on Wednesday, I am privileged to be working with the man and Lang may it continue.
