Karagandy manager on Celtic and his own players

1898

Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier.  He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.

Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.

He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.

“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.

“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.

“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.

“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

Rangers’ directors have been forced to reconsider Charles Green’s return to the club as a consultant after a stormy meeting with angry fans on Thursday night. (Daily Record)

Chief executive Craig Mather told fans another meeting will be held next week, when the outspoken Yorkshireman Green could be sacked. (Daily Express)

Directors also admitted they have spent most of the £23m raised in December’s stock market flotation, and that Rangers only have £10m in the bank.

Reminds of that James Bond film, Freefall.

  3. I don’t know where from you took all these prices for the trip to Karagandy?

It’s simply trip. You can fly to Warsaw from Glasgow for not more than 100 GBP, from Warsaw to Moscow for 200 GBP and from Moscow to Karagandy for 50 GBP. All return tickets.

With all due respect to Balde, when you’re 1-1 at home to Ross County and you don’t trust your new 2m striker to come off the bench even for 15mins to give us some fresh impetus and/or nick a goal, I can see why some aren’t classing him as a ‘suitable’ or direct replacement for Hooper;)

  5. Directions for anybody thinking of driving to Karagandy:

If you come up Duke Street to Parkhead Cross you must turn left; if you turn right along the Gallowgate you’ll get lost.

That is not bad! Well done on pointing it out,and going to that trouble in the first place.

    Good draw for us

Celtic have to indeed plan for this by chartering a jumbo with 1st class for players with beds and then selling rest of seats to fans no brainier

Can’t have players flying in upright seats for 8 hours

On the other point. Our spine of team gone for 20m with no replacement bought

ST,do you think there would be many of the travelling fans upright after 8 hours.

  8. Never in my time as a Celtic supporter has it looked like our board are sucking the life out of the football team.

They have known for months that Hooper and Wanyama would go.

They have known for months that Wilson was homesick and that there was the possibility that he would go.

The question must be asked .

Has Neil Lennon and his scouts wasted the money on Virgil,Moyolouko, and Balde?

He Lenny spent the bulk of what budget he has already?

I have mixed feelings on this.

One thing I believe is that we are taking a huge gamble trying to purchase, and acclimatise new players ,whilst simultaneously trying to qualify for the CL .

This has been very poorly planned by all concerned.

    Logistically very poor.

Having had time to read a bit more about our opponents I can say I am alot happier with the draw now.

Give them the repect they deserve but think we can do it over both legs.

Listened to some of Radio Clyde last night (I know) however one thought did strike me…each village has a village idiot and Derek Johnstone is that idiot. Why does he get such a platform?

  10. Green Lantern (((((0))))) on

Ladbrokes have Celtic favourites to win in Kazakhstan at 6/5 with Karagandy 7/4 and 9/4 the draw.

  11. Will Peter gamble on beating them?

Will he be thinking,we can easily beat this mob because on paper they appear to be not that great.

So,would it be unrealistic to think,we’re almost there so let’s get a few in as,

    1.They’ll help us get there

2.It’ll give them more time to settle

3.We can afford it as qualification is 70% guaranteed.

All in all, less of a gamble.

Whereas,if we drew Vienna or Legia i don’t think he would’ve pulled the trigger on new faces.

In the longer term I am not writing off the new signings.

My question is have we wasted the money on players who will have no positive impact on our chances of CL qualification?

    Priority.That`s the question.

Sadly imho money is the priority.

Qualification is the be all and end all.

In an ideal world, we would show the Dons the respect they deserve, but we don`t make the rules. We have to abide by them.

I think we will skoosh the S.P.L. championship.

Let`s chat again at the end of the season when I`m sure we both hope I am right.

Lets not forget we get 2.1m for participation in the play-off round alone. I am confident at least one signing will be made before we play Shakhter but I’m not sure how many chanegs to the squad can be made…

    Agreed.

Saw him at Brentford and couldn’t trap his fingers in the door. His goal was a mis-hit. That’s how it deceived their keeper.

Tried hard but, dear me. You have to ask what scout saw £ 2M in the guy and what DVD did they show to Lawwell.

I know we’ve bought some good ‘unknowns’ but some of the others leave you baffled.

I really can’t believe Balde actually played for a professional team anywhere on the planet.

Nice words from their manager. Clearly he’s not expecting them to qualify, mind games?

Have to say that Moyolouko also played at Brentford and did look pretty capable.

He has got Championship form so you’d expect reasonable quality.

    He’ll do fine.

With those odds the bookies expect it to be very tight over there, possibly a draw. Surprising! I’m hoping Celtic can finish the tie over there.

I’m sure you will be right and I also hope that we skoosh the SPL but are you seriously saying that the players and manager fly to Kazakhstan before the Aberdeen game kicks off? If that is not the case and they leave after the game I would play them. They will be rested on the journey and get the match practice at a competitive level.

I don’t see that resting players helps. Each to their own opinion though.

    Glasgow – Warsaw 100 GBP

    Warsaw – Moscow 200 GBP

    Moscow – Karagandy 50 GBP

Scredrivers new set, spanners new set, other tools for for fixing TU-154 during the flight from Moscow to Karagandy – 1650 GBP. Total sum 2000 GBP.
