Karagandy manager on Celtic and his own players

1898

Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier.  He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.

Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.

He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.

“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.

“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.

“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.

“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

He might be as good as the one who played for Sheffield Wednesday.

A shadow of the player he was under Brian Clough.

How many times did he get a player to play like a superstar for him,yet they bombed elsewhere?

    A genius-flawed for sure,but a genius nonetheless.

I was on here on CQN stating exactly that. No big club came in for him. A gamble that PL lost as we would have got more for Hooper. Against Juve Gary would have made no difference. And what difference does it make losing Vic and Gary before this years competition.

When I saw both players hinting that they would be staying in April in The Daily Record ST renewal time…it was obvious that we would not miss that opportunity.

We need to accept that we are a feeder club for championship type clubs.

  10. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

I worked in and out of Kazakhstan 2002 – 2004 on the Karachaganak field development. The place was full of expats working in major oil projects and probably still is, so there will be a good number of Celtic supporters already in country. The worst part back then was getting into the country but once there it was pretty good and everything was as cheap as chips.

Its the only place I’ve ever been where it was a regular occurrence to see donkeys being transported around in the back seats of cars with their heads sticking out the windows, ha ha that was always funny to see.

Hopefully better transport arrangements will be made for our bhoys.

P.S. I never made it to Almaty while working over there but it’s supposed to a beautiful city. Don’t believe everything Borat told you.

I agree, I’m hopeful that we may have somebody lined up with the promise of Euro football. Obviously not heard anything just a hope.

Re the ASA – this relates to their sales pitch where they claimed that 48% of ALL Scottish football fans were zombies and their nearest rivals only had 33% – leaving very few supporters for any of the other teams.

They were called out and could substantiate so had to withdraw. (Surrender!)

This is the second time they have been caught telling lies, they had to remove the boost that the Panel at the London Stock Exchange endorsed their same club claim. They had this on their website but the Stock Exchange made them remove it when asked to explain.

The ASA are aware that this was part of the evidence submitted by the advertiser and that it turned out to be incorrect. Apparently the ASA ONLY considered the evidence submitted by them and did not consider the evidence supplied by the 70 people who complained or the handful who forced a review and have been successful in getting this case re-opened.

Paul referred to this latest development on Twitter as “The Wee Advert Case” and it certainly is a victory for the two people who complained!

  13. BALDE stats for last year were 1 goal every 2 starts. Of the 8 subs appearances he made 5 were for less than 10 minutes.

I reckon both lasted a year after Fashanu’s arrival.

    Possibly not a coincidence….

Clough did have a rep for signing people, and shipping them out fairly quickly if they didnae shape up almost from day one.

Pretty sure the expression “He can trap it further than I can kick it” originated from him watching Gary Megson in his first training session!

  15. So the game on wednesday has earned us 2.5 mill for reaching the play offs, add a couple of mill for Kelvin, good luck big man, and we are guaranteed 3-4 mill for the group stages of the europa if we fail to get the CL.

Shirly we can get in what’s needed to help Lenny have at least a decent fighting chance to make the CL group stages, or do we gamble with what we have.

Re. Balde – time will indeed tell.

May I respectfully request that we all refrain from comparisons between Amido and “George Weah’s cousin” ?

An arrogant bully boy with no tactical or strategic nous who successfully faked it as a manager for years was taken in by an agent’s hype. They had the internet back then – a quick check would have confirmed the sting, even to an idiot.

By contrast Celtic is a professional organisation that does its research thoroughly.

Amido Balde is only 22 but already has a pedigree which includes Sporting and Vitória de Guimarães.
