Kasper should plan a return to the game

151

Kasper Schmeichel is two years older than Joe Hart, so was a surprising addition to the squad when Joe retired in 2024.  Doubts about his ability didn’t last, as he immediately proved to be an upgrade in the keeper position.  Age, however, catches up with all of us and Kasper has looked his 39 years this season.

Much of that will be due to the shoulder injury he played through for some time.  It restricted his movement and training, and led to a perceptible decline in performance.  Had Brendan Rodgers stayed, I expect Kasper would have been dropped for Viljami Sinisalo earlier in the season, but the temporary basis of Martin O’Neill’s first term back, and the chaos of Wilfried Nancy, did not align with making an unforced change at the back.

If recuperation from his operation goes to plan, he will be 40 when he is fit to return to the game.  There are examples for him to follow, if he still has the appetite for the game, but it will likely be at a lower level than he has played at since he was a teenager.  For his sake, I hope he gets back and is allowed to retire on his own terms.

  1. Schmeichel been lying about his fitness, managers would trust a guy with his experience to tell the truth.

  2. Kasper’s conditioning leads me to believe he should retire.

His shoulder clearly affected his ability to dive. However, his bulk is the reason why he can’t move along or off his line.

    Stuttgart was a blessing.

I recall some ex-player (Chaz Mulgrew) saying that at any time almost every pro player is soldiering on with some kinda knock or ailment – some worse than others; some (clearly) with worse consequences for the player and the position he occupies. Goalie mistakes are pointedly costly.

I’d like to think most fans wish KS nothing but the best even if it’s likely that he won’t be our number 1 in coming years. HH

I’m not really going along with that bada.

If thousands of fans in the stands can see that Kasper is done, I’d expect our coaching staff to know that as well.

  6. If he does retire, he’ll be in good Celtic company in that Ronnie Simpson’s career also ended at aged 39 with a shoulder injury.

To Vale Bhoy’s observation at tail end of the last thread ….

Kasper’s likely last game ever at Celtic Park was Stuttgart.

    If you booed him?

    That’s yours to own.

No realistic opportunity for you to redress.

IMHO – something to be reflected upon

  8. After his performance against the Hun at new year KS should have been dropped immediately, the Moore goal in particular was one of the worst errors I’ve seen in a long time. The fact that he was still being picked eight weeks later is not a good look for the coaching staff.

You posted this earlier. Do you mean you don’t know if you want Celtic to win the league or not? Genuine question.

  11. onenightinlisbon on

Schmeichel made error after error yet for some unknown reason he kept his place.

The errors alone should have been enough but with an injury as well, we really don’t have a clue do we?

  12. It’s interesting Paul that you say Kasper was an upgrade on Joe.

Thought JH was playing his best stuff in the run up to his retirement

  13. Viljami Sinisalo was dropped by Brendan after VS sat with BR to do a presser after a game at Ibrox were VS was asked a question about how he coped with the old firm atmosphere.

VS said: “I was hit by over 40 missiles thrown from Rangers fans.”

And BR dropped VS out of the team without any explanation??????

I mean, isn’t the manager or Celtic’s media team supposed to brief VS about what you can and cannot say in old firm land????

Living a lie for the old firm CSC

    Sad are the homes….

  14. Kasper has played most of this season injured, out of shape and overweight.

I said early this morning that most fans knew and recognised that. We often asked on here how bad Sinisalo must be if he is not been given a chance to step in. We were wrong. Sinisalo has shown he is a decent keeper and certainly a better option than an injured Kasper.

This situation reflects badly on the medical team for not insisting Kasper was properly treated months ago. How is it possible he only went to see a specialist this week?

The coaching staff fair little better for picking a player they knew was injured , a player who was costing us goals and games.

Kasper should also have put Celtic ahead of his own desire to keep his place though the looming World Cup may have been on his mind.

  16. We have a goalkeeping coach. How could this have happened? He clearly couldn’t stretch properly, and was incapable of making any meaningful attempt to save penalties: CL qualifier and the cup final surely exposed him? I don’t want to think about the other goals conceded that a mobile and agile keeper would have had a chance of saving. Goalkeeping coach, other coaches, medical staff and the player himself all to blame for this. And v sorry for VS who should have been in the team months ago.

I fell bad, but this is a total mess and a costly one.

Keepers are less likely to save a pen or any shot that is down low to their heart/left hand side compared to their right hand side by a factor of 36.4%, a stat that astound of forehead I was.

23.8% more goals are scored, when goals are scored from in swinging corners than out swinging corners, a stat that didn’t astound the forehead so much

  23. Schmeichel shouldn’t have been brought back for the Scottish Cup final and he proved that by selling it. He should never have started another game for us after that because he was never fit enough after that.

  24. Glad that last article has been replaced. We’ve seen your best and worst in the space of a few days.

Kasper did us a disservice by playing through his injury. Our medical team made a huge mistake not telling the coaching team not to pick him. He cost us the cup final by trying to save a weak shot with one arm and has cost us other similar goals. The guy also had some amazing performances but a real team player would not have done what he did. I sincerely wish him all the best.

you didnt need to be a medical expert or a qualified coach to see that KS shouldnt have been in the team.

he stopped looking like a goalkeeper when the ball came near him, with his bizarre attempts to deal with it, with costly outcomes.

anyone who simply watches football could see that.

ridiculous that he was continually picked, i dont care what he said himself about his fitness, or what the medical staff said, or what the goalkeeping coach said.

he stopped being a goalkeeper, and so shouldnt have been picked.

  27. The Battered Bunnet on

I think the cup final criticism refers to his mistake at Aberdeen’s equaliser, a horrid moment.

Aberdeen’s penalties were about the best set I’ve ever seen.

*this reminded me of the season our first 10 was stopped, 1872 had discovered a remarkable goalie who ended up getting capped for the national side and was looked at being the goalie of the future, we went into the January game at the bigot dome top of the league, and literally played them off the park, Paul Wilson was the chief tormentor laying on chance after chance with Kenny and Harry Harry being the main culprits, NOT really in missing the opportunities, but the ball kept hitting their goalie on the heid, legs arse etc.

It was unbelievable, we had literally played them off the park but it seemed that they had scored with their only 3 shots on goal, they went top of the league that night on GA and stayed there for the rest of the season, but IMHO the league wisnae lost that afternoon but the following Saturday when we lost 2-3 the motherwell at parkheid, in fact we ended up in 3rd place after losing another 6 and tying 3 games with a tired and jaded side, Ally Hunter NEVER played for us again after the ‘well game, Big Billy retired and the wee mhan and Brogie left the club at the end of the season.

We actually won 4 cups that season though, with Paul Wilson scoring in all 4 Cup Finals, and in an end of the season Glasgow Cup Final against the newly crowned champions we once again without our captain Big Billy who was replaced with the armband by Brogie who was concussed and had to go off in his last game for us, once again pummelled them with Paul Wilson not only being our architect but scorer of our 2 goals in a 2-2 tie, in a game which also unleashed the despicable chant of “Wilson is a darkie” as well as “Wilson’s maw’s deid” in reference to his mother passing away in the SC Final week in which he also starred.

Jimmy Sanderson went tae town on them in a front page article in Monday’s Daily Express, stating their bigotry is bad enough but now they are stopping to racism, I was working on the M8 extension to Glasgow Airport in close proximity to their ground when a debate broke out about the savage attack on Paul, one hun, no NOT a bluenose I hasten to add, justified it by saying after he scored his first, a tap in from a poor jardine pass back, he seemingly ran behind the goal at the Mount Florida end and crossed himself, wtf I was tempted to say he must be a contortionist to do that as the proper description is “blessed” or “made the sign of the cross”.

Anyway one week later the Home Championships began with Scotland tying 2-2 with Wales and England 0-0 with NIRE, 3 days later Scotland walloped NIRE, 3-0 at Hampden while the next night England and Wales tied 2-2, so the finale was set up for the following Saturday at Wembley with Scotland on 3 points and England 2 and the pundits raving about the new young Scotland goalie who was seen as the future of the national side.

That afternoon of the game I had family over as I would be leaving the country again in 25 days, one of then was from down south so it was pretty much an amicable group, one of the panels on tele consisted of the Big Mhan who when asked about kennedy replied that he was a left sided goalie which was highly unusual and it took them a while to realise it but we did in the GC Final and he had no doubt that Don (Revie) would be aware of that now.

England walloped Scotland 5-1 that day with all 5 goals including, a looping header, all coming at the goalies right hand side, he NEVER played for Scotland again.
