Kasper Schmeichel is two years older than Joe Hart, so was a surprising addition to the squad when Joe retired in 2024. Doubts about his ability didn’t last, as he immediately proved to be an upgrade in the keeper position. Age, however, catches up with all of us and Kasper has looked his 39 years this season.
Much of that will be due to the shoulder injury he played through for some time. It restricted his movement and training, and led to a perceptible decline in performance. Had Brendan Rodgers stayed, I expect Kasper would have been dropped for Viljami Sinisalo earlier in the season, but the temporary basis of Martin O’Neill’s first term back, and the chaos of Wilfried Nancy, did not align with making an unforced change at the back.
If recuperation from his operation goes to plan, he will be 40 when he is fit to return to the game. There are examples for him to follow, if he still has the appetite for the game, but it will likely be at a lower level than he has played at since he was a teenager. For his sake, I hope he gets back and is allowed to retire on his own terms.

Maybe I’m simple, but Jota, CCV and Aj are injured and cannot play. Kasper is injured , why oh why is he always asked to play, such a shame on the guy. Get him the treatment, get him fit, then decide

If he is out for a year he is back around march 2027
By the time he is match fit, we are probs into the latter stages of that season, or more likely when he is properly matchfit, the next season (27/28)
Given that he is 39 now, by the time he has had a few months of games and a solid pre season, he will be 41
He will struggle to make the top echelons of the game (outliers are Craig Gordon who is 43) but there is a chance
Kasper didn’t mention Celtic in his interview yesterday. It was solely about Denmark’s World Cup. Not a peep about Celtic going for the double.
His priorities this year were clear. I suspect our CBs are quite happy to see KS move on. Scales’ comments about how great it was to have a keeper commanding his area danmned KS imo.
I’d imagine they were pretty fed up with the finger pointing every time Kasper sold the farm.
