Kasper spooks

277

Like you (if you are typical of the CQN demographic) and me, Kasper Schmeichel is older than Joe Hart.  In itself, this doesn’t mean he is wrong for Celtic, he could be a perfect fit for what we require.

I suspect, however, we will both be alarmed that our recruitment strategy has pivoted so sharply from that of any forward looking football club.

Joe worked out well for us. At the time, I viewed his signing as a consequence of a new manager arriving during lockdown, with very limited scope.

Maybe Brendan will beat the system, this way won titles here back in the 90s, after all.

  1. The article is a pathetic snark at a man who just won us a double in spite of the hamstringing from above his head.

There are people with no shame. Whatever personal issues people have with Rodgers … I despair, I really do.

The idea that a policy of signing only projects is in line with the vast, vast majority of football when, in fact, the really successful clubs are built on experience, is so far removed from reality it makes you want to scream to be reading it on a Celtic site.

The editorials on here have become a running joke elsewhere. They get more deranged by the day. If this guy isn’t having a go at fellow bloggers it’s the boss.

But there are some at the club who will never be subjected to scrutiny. They can do no wrong.

  2. During one of his games at the Euros, the commentary team were saying they thought Kasper was still a great keeper, and should still be playing at the top.He also had Jensen, who we were allegedly after,an £8 million keeper, as his understudy. He will do.

Hopefully, not having to lash out on a keeper, will mean more money for BR to spend.

    It will,wont it?.

With the sale of Oh pending, that will push my money list taken this year,to,

    Abada. £10,000,000

    Oh, £4,200,000

    Vata. £275,000. I will update.

A few weeks ago I posted that Celtic would delay signing Bernardo until closer to season starting.

Why sign a player at start of window and pay weekly wages for him to sit in the sun? Sign him as and when required and let Benfica cover his wages, saving tens of thousands of pounds in the process.

Bernardo will be up to speed as he has been training with the Lisbon club.

Now I read that Celtic have only just made an official bid for the player, in time to travel to the USA with the squad.

    Makes sense to me.

  4. Tom McLaughlin on

It is also being reported that Oh is undergoing a medical in Belgium. That tells me Celtic have sealed a deal for a striker.

    Announcement imminent?

  5. James Forrest,

If you are still looking in,please post your editorial at the time of the John Mc Ginn transfer, when you wrote ” We should tell the Petrie to do one, when he was demanding £4 million for the player. We were doing the right thing, not be held to ransom, blah blah blah.Total opposite of what you have recently been writing,in your anti PL tirades.

You go with the flow like all the rest.Spare us all the reek of sanctity.

  6. I suspect many of us (most of us?) would have been happy to see Joe Hart stay another year, despite his age, and we have been happy with him these past few seasons, so to cavil about the age of Kasper Schmeichel seems disingenuous to me.

The figures being bandied about for some apparent targets – Kelleher for £25m for example – make Schmeichel look sensible on a season-long deal, maybe longer if he’s good and he likes us.

  7. TML,

    ” Makes sense to me”

It does indeed. Why I was puzzled by your total failure to grasp the point of my post yesterday about naming targets, like Spurs did,and confusing it with the actual buying of players.I only used Spurs as an example, for the multitude of clubs who don’t give a fig about secrecy.Anyway, onwards we go.

  8. good afternoon to all CQN bloggers.

I do not post very often nowadays as I have no wish to be associated with

one or so people who occasionally use this blog.

however today I will post to let the blog know that a long time poster and friend to

all bloggers, David Marshall, better known by his blog name “OLD TIM” celebrates his

    85 birthday today.

So to you DAVID, HAVE A HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND KEEP WELL.

Good to see you back on the blog, however temporary.

I hope you are keeping well.

  10. A very Happy 85th Birthday Old Tim but you need to get some in to catch the rest of us!

Ist December 1968 was a great day for mankind – I’ve got to say that as nobody else will!

    Hail! Hail!

  11. Brendan has recently stated that Vata was offered a very good contract with Celtic .

It was also explained to him that he would have been one of three strikers fighting for a place in the first team .

I think that it was Brendan’s plan for those three strikers to be Kyogo,Idah ,and Vata .

    Oh will be sold .

I am surprised by this ,as at this stage ,I don’t see Vata ,as an adequate replacement as a striker ,for Kyogo or Vata .

Brendan seems committed to giving our academy players route to the first team .

I just hope that we are not going to give young players first team appearances ,just to say that we are giving youth a chance .

They must be good enough .

Nothing better than when a Connolly,Hay,Macari Dalglish ,Burns,Aitken ,McCluskey ,Nicholas ,McStay ,Grant ,McGeady,or Tierney breaks throw from our own ranks .

Far too few in the last 20 years .

But they must be good enough and just played to say that we give youth a chance .

    Cheers guys.

    Appreciated.

Let’s hope there are more announcements over the next week.

Striker and ideally a keeper keeper that can get up to speed supporting big Kasper and take over from him next season.

Would like to see Idah and Bernardo confirmed also. No need to delay much longer.

Another title win this season will see them across the city implode even further. That’s if they even see out the season. 😂🍀🏆🇮🇪⚽️

A ‘Brendan signing’ was called for, regardless of age, as the exit door is rammed with ‘projects’. Goalkeeper is a specialism that can give you any number of overpriced willing Barkas types, the professional buddy system might have prevailed this time.

Halfa summer left to get the chequebook out for Brendan’s other identified ‘key positions’.

“Have we not signed anyone yet ??

    Sack the board”

Recent articles would suggest the manager is responsible and that huge bank balances are important because of something to do with ibrox concrete. Fairly convoluted, though avoids us having to discuss transfer strategy and execute responsibilities.

    Agree 100%.

I despair at the number of times I hear/read Celtic supporters on CQN and elsewhere, as recently as yesterday, say Brendan should give academy players a run in the team to get them up to speed.

Would these same supporters be happy for Celtic to suffer a draw or defeat while giving youngsters a game just to keep them sweet? Of course they wouldn’t.

Young players like Dalglish, McGrain, McStay, Nicholas, McGeady, Tierney etc got a run in the first team because they hit the ground running, improved the team and deserved to be selected every week.

Kelly and Vata were last season gradually introduced to first-team action. It makes no sense to blame Brendan for them being unsettled by not giving them extended runs to keep them happy.

    Hope you are well.

Nothing wrong with giving academy players a run once a game is well and truly won, three up or whatever. Furthermore putting a academy player on in the last few minutes of a game is pointless !

  19. If I had a recruitment strategy that had delivered 1 first team starter in 2 years (AJ out of necessity) and the squad bloated with dross then I would pivot from it too.

Haven’t seen much of KS in the last few years but I know he was a great keeper and I know the manager thinks highly of him. We all remember de Vries so there are no guarantees but KS was at a much higher level than him. Neuer is still the Bayern captain at 38. Buffon went into his 40s. Craig Gordon was still performing well before his last injury. Certainly doesn’t scream forward planning but I don’t think there would have many complaints if Hart had decided to do 1 more year.

The rest of the signings will define this window. If Oh is away you’d have to think Idah is close. And a lot of smoke for Bernardo so sounds close too. Credit should be given for getting them done but that’s the bare minimum we needed. Time to start spending serious money on our glaring weaknesses

  20. bournesouprecipe on

Knocking back any Celtic contract at 18? – first class facilities, health and fitness, the best of coaches, dietitians, medical care terms and conditions. Financial security, and a platform for adulation in one of Europe’s most revered theatres.

Not included in first team squads? Why not try a loan to Kilmarnock, St Mirren Aberdeen et al, then come back with experience worked fine for Callum MacGregor.

    As ever CSC

  21. TINYTIM on 13TH JULY 2024 1:33 PM

We couldn’t keep GG happy when he was 2nd choice so I don’t think we can keep 3 strikers happy. A smaller squad with higher quality supplemented by either the academy or a few projects is what I think the manager would prefer.

  22. justshatered on

Odd article hinting that every single player we recruit must have age on his side, therefore limited experience, and potential profit.

In that scenario there is no room for a Joe Hart, who was 34 when we signed him, or Mooy who brought a calming, tempo adjusting experience to the team.

Ultimately this signing, if it goes through, is yet another damning indictment of our recruitment department and strategy. There seems little joined up thinking at the club.

This signing can only be a stop gap but does that mean we’ve aimed too high yet again or the targets are not fancied by the manager.

It is my belief that every player we attempt to recruit should be at least the equivalent of what we have in the team. Ideally the new player would be slightly better so that general standards are constantly being raised.

The left back position is a prime example of this. So many fans want a backup for that position but at the same time those same fans don’t like Greg Taylor. Essentially they want an inferior player to the one we already have.

Can anyone really say they are content with our recruitment process over the last two windows prior to this one ?

    I obviously don’t know

But I would venture a guess the only reason Kasper is coming to Celtic is because we can’t get who we want possibly until next summer (as a guess Liverpool’s Kellegher)

Also we could be losing 2 goalkeepers meaning at the mo Bain is all we have)

Kasper not ideal – but could just be insurance.

Our editor has had a few wee digs at our Manager.

I have no problem with Paul67 having an alternative view

Personally I do believe we would have won the double last year without him

I am glad he is back and I am 100% with him

  26. I don’t know much about Kellegher but it looks like he has played very little first team football. At least Schmeichel is a known quantity and a top keeper. Of course, age will catch up with him but hopefully no time soon.
