Kasper spooks

277

Like you (if you are typical of the CQN demographic) and me, Kasper Schmeichel is older than Joe Hart.  In itself, this doesn’t mean he is wrong for Celtic, he could be a perfect fit for what we require.

I suspect, however, we will both be alarmed that our recruitment strategy has pivoted so sharply from that of any forward looking football club.

Joe worked out well for us. At the time, I viewed his signing as a consequence of a new manager arriving during lockdown, with very limited scope.

Maybe Brendan will beat the system, this way won titles here back in the 90s, after all.

  1. I think Paul’s article IS clearly sceptical of the Schmeichel transfer decision, therefore it can be seen as critical of the manager, who everyone, including those who said all signings were foisted n him, is down to Brendan because of the Leicester connection.

    So what?

Paul67 is critical of the manager and he has been before. I believe he has also praised him on occasions too but Paul does not toe the line on the Suits- all bad, Football men- all good argument so he, unlike us, has an agenda or is a mouthpiece for Suit-ish voices or one Big Bad Sharp Suit in particular.

But, do we not criticise Brendan from time to time. Are there any 100% Brendan Loyalists wh believe he can do no wrong? I wouldn’t put Chairbhoy in that camp as he has admitted Brendan has had recruitment problems in the past.

So, if we afford urselves the liberty to be critical of managers, coaches and players when they are deemed to deserve it, why should Paul67 not get digs in occasionally? Why are his opinions deemed to be shaded by ulterior motivations while ours are all pristine and innocent, devoid of any side, partiality, cognitive dissonance or misinformation.

For the record, I, too would have preferred a younger keeper but, above all I want a good keeper. I welcome Kaspar Schmeichel with open arms and think he can be very successful with us. Yes, he is older than Joe Hart and much older than Joe when he came to us. He may be a short term measure of 1,2 or 3 years duration but so have many good young players we bring as they move on.

So when, I am faced with a choice between a young keeper with a transfer fee of £8m+ who cannot get into the Denmark squad for the Euros and a “free” transfer (with plenty of associated costs but less than £8m by a long shot) who was the number one choice for that country at the recent Euros, then I know we are getting a better keeper, at least at this point in time.

So, I disagree with Paul’s conclusion- so what?

Does that make Paul’s view disingenuous, pathetic, shameless, or a running joke in Celtic cyber world? No-it’s just an emotional over-reaction on the part of those making that charge.

Paul has an opinion on Kaspar’s worth to us and our “strategy”. I think he’s dead wrong on this. But I don’t think either of us is a total numpty, though we can be guilty of occasional bouts of numptiness.

Address the argument and not the perceived agenda because the perception is not reality, not even in Trumpworld.

  2. We demand a keeper . Celtic PLC have known that Joe hart would leave from the moment he signed.

No forward planning. Lawwell low balls for a free transfer.

    We demand a keeper.

    But not that wan

After the DDV signing, I had concerns about Brendan’s choice of goalkeepers.

I’m glad he has gone for a safe pair of hands this time rather than signing a keeper because he is good with the ball at his feet.

Further to my earlier assertion that Oh being allowed to leave suggests that an incoming striker is imminent, Adam Idah has been left out of Norwich City’s squad for this afternoon’s friendly v Northampton.

The new Norwich manager wanted to take a look at him , but maybe Norwich’s version of Peter Lawwell has other ideas . £6m of them .

It’s Paul’s blog, he csn say what hr wants.

I’d have preferred a younger keeper but for the here and now Schmeicel (Danish No 1) seems a better bet at no transfer fee than £8m for Jensen (can’t get in Danish squad)

My instinct though is Brendan really wants Kelleher and is prepared to wait.

With Rodgers not appearing to unconcerned after the Ayr game, one suspects that things are at an advanced stage, and as the club are notorious for playing their cards close to their chest, I’d tend to suggest that the new keeper either still is, or has been involved at the European Championships in Germany.

    One of life’s good guys.

Hope your enjoying a large gin sir.

  11. Idah and Bernado might be OK for the SPL but not for the Champions league and a 38 year old keeper doesn’t help either .Oh for a clear out from the top to the bottom within the Celtic boardroom, they they got away with winning the league last season with average players ,but if there isn’t any quality signings this time ,then there luck will run out ,

  12. Bernardo was absolutely fine for a young man playing in the champions league and I’m sure he’ll only improve.

As for Idah , who knows, maybe he’ll be a sensation.

    As for our new goalie?

    Short term solution? Absolutely.

    Unsurprising reaction in some quarters.

“F*** Mark Lawwell. Brendan should be in overall charge of transfers”

“Mark Lawwell leaves Celtic. Good. GTF. Take tie dad with you”

…. The Brendan Rodgers led recruitment team signs a guy BR has already worked with ….

    “Shameful”

    “Clearly no plan”

    “Cheap option”

    “Embarrassing”

Just speculation … what happens to the underspend against projected cost of a new goalie?

    🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

  18. TML,

    😉

Who is to say which keeper would do the best job for us?.Barkas ticked every box.How did that end.

IMHO,we can now go to America, more happily. If we get in one of the two, fine, but we have a strong pool of players going.Nearly the starting 11.Gives Lawel a chance to impress in the middle, playing with class players.

I have no doubt the signings will come, just ones we dont expect.

Our Board may be MANY things, but not stupid. They know we have qualifier to play for CL next year.I expect divine intervention.

Good evening all from the Victoria Bar. I hope you are all well and enjoying your Saturday night. I know I am.

  20. My friends in Celtic,

Normally i would be raging that we sign a keeper older than one who has just retired.

However Kasper -S is an exception to tje rule. Still a very good keeper playing at tje Euros for his country.

So i think Celtic get away with this one and Kasper will raise our spirits.

As for Joe Hart; i am glad Joe has retired. He retired at the top and a longer stay could have possibly diminished his legacy at Parkhead.

He got us and will go forward getting us. We have not seen or heard the last of JH.

On another topic, we no longer have a reserve league that successfully gave game times to our youngsters and prepared them for the first team.

Our 9 off Academy players who have just signed contracts need competitive football to progress and feel they are valued and belong.

We can give them that in the domestic cup competitions. It is a balancing act and perhaps a risk, but it is a risk we must take for progression.

We need to prioritise and the league and Europe must be our main focus.

    HH to all.

    Unbelievable game of rugby.

    Hats off to Ireland.

A mix of experience and new blood triumphs over the back to back world champions.

Those new players will gain a massive amount of confidence and kick on to become top, top players.

On another note, your not telling me there’s not a 20 year old hidden diamond in the Korean 2nd division that we could develop as our goalkeeper?

I’m becoming more convinced Jack Butland has zero vision in his left eye.

    ——————-

i thought all last season he was suspect down low to the left, not letting all the shots in but being over cautious in putting them round the post often.

  23. was it e-tims who said

we are in for two goalkeepers.

one older he wants to sign but has to be first choice for next season

one younger, who wants to be in first team so that is a stumbling point.

    now that makes sense.

i will be in a minotorty of one again probably but, if we signed nothig but freebies and loans i would still be happy.

as to ground and matchday amd infrastrucutre i wonder what wil be announced, it must be due soon or paul would not be hinting.

  24. all the youths, forget domestic cups that is not enough games to develop and our support does not accept getting beat.

loan them all out, all of them, if they are good enough they will play and come back to us.
