Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

Given that the story has now been discounted you’d assume it has served its purpose and we are therefore just about at the stage of actually appointing someone.

    Celtic to play Dynamo Dresden

By: Newsroom Staff on 02 Jun, 2014 14:12

CELTIC will face Dynamo Dresden in a pre-season friendly at the Glücksgas Stadium on Saturday, July 19.

The game in Germany is part of Celtic’s preparations for the new season, and comes just four days after their first UEFA Champions League qualifier.

The following weekend, the Hoops are back in Germany to play St Pauli.

I don’t agree with many of your posts but I’m with you all the way re Steve Clarke.

Also, I watched that guitarist you posted the link to. He is superb. Well spotted.

  7. Let’s face facts here, RK turned it down because Celtic failed to qualify for the greatest, most competitive league in the world.

  8. Ernie Lynch, aye, I was wondering if MON and RK were playing a prt in a side show.

I didn’t know it was a side show, so I was as taken is as the next guy,IF that is what it was.

I have no more insight nor inside knowledge than every other punter.

But I didn’t believe it was a stick on and that Celtic had closed off other options.

I would go back to my previous preferred option, a young up comer from abroad who can bring a new philosophy to our game. I wouldn’t be surprised if, when announced we all go, “WHO?”

  9. bournesouprecipe on

If we had payed attention to the details we’d have known it was never going to be Roy Keane, unfortunately some of us ignored the evidence, and the reasons why there was no real chance he’d abdicate and relocate with all that it encumbers.

The alleged short list remains bereft in the first instance for a club of this magnitude poor league or not, and if we move from ABC in a downward spiral there are bound to be more disappointed supporters, and some happy clapping “He’ll do for me Tommy’s”

    He quite obviously was.

Are you being wise after the non-event?

  15. Mojo – read the above link. Celtic would have struck gold if they got a hold of Steve Clarke IMO.

  16. Billy Bhoy 05 on

    Steve Clarke now odds on.

Prepare for the cheapest available option.

Obviously Keane was told what the budget would be, what was expected, and also that he would have to sell one or two players.

The club really is turning into a Mickey Mouse outfit.

Every single one of those candidates, are tubes, Keane included.

In your own mind though , you are thinking – if bring Keane in,at least they are going to give him a few bob to spend of all people.

    No mission.

And we will never hit the 10 I-A-R with those two comedians running the club, don’t forget this season is the year we should have been going for the tenth league title, but sure they funked that up in 2008/09, gambling again with scared money never won.

Zombies or no zombies, those two will still find a way to mess it up.

    Fair enough.

    But a smokescreen for what?

  20. Poor succession planning by the Celtic board.

Contrast that with our erstwhile dead club rivals.

They groomed and Molly coddled the cardigan’s successor, weaning him with letting him take charge of cup games and then taking over complete control when the once Scotland boss returned to Carmyle.

And note he’s sill in his position.

You can see how well that’s worked out.

My guess is that RK is a smokescreen. More probable for me will be a Jackie Macnamara type appointment.

I believe Roy Keane may well have realised that walking out on his country shortly before a World Cup for the second time would have sparked vilification that would follow him to his grave.

A smokescreen to allow CFC Board to focus on real possibilities without media interference… I’m guessing?

Also as I said earlier … Any appointment now be welcomed as it will be viewed by many as less risky than RK….

    Now I’m really stuck.

Why would you want to hide an appointment like Jackie behind a smokescreen?

Especially when it would label him with a “second choice ” tag and allow the club to be rejected in a high profile manner.

I don’t see any logic in this.

  29. We play a CL qualifier in mid July and at the moment, we’re all over the place.

Just logged on to read the news about Roy Keane. Even the wife, who rarely comments on Celtic but usually gets it right when she does, thought it was a hugely bad idea to appoint him. I’m very glad. I’d like to see the manager selected from Clarke, Moyes, Collins, Garcia or Petrescu but most certainly not Owen Coyle.

Here’s hoping an announcement can be made soon.

There is more chance of Roy Keane taking over from Alan Hansen on MOTD next season than taking over from Neil Lennon. Still, Roy’s departure, and this time he is on the plane with the Irish team, to the good ol’ USA, changes the scenario from 5-10 candidates to 4-10, or is it 5-9?
