Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

  1. One more suggestion for Ronny. Get the players out to supporters functions. Let them see what the fans do to support the club and what it means to them.

South of Tunis……………was in London last week and to hear an English accent was a rarity. Do any English born people actually live there? Saw a great show there The Jersey Boys try and see it, brilliant.

  3. BMCUW-A few years back a few of us were going to the Celtic POTY in the Thistle Hotel. We met up early to hit the toon for a wee pub crawl before it.We went to the College Bar,and in walks Chris Sutton and Jackie McNamara. For the next hour i saw working class bhoys who had saved up to go to the event, arguing with each other about who was buying the 2 wealthy football players a drink.Strange stuff

When I’m travelling home,I get a bus from Swindon to Victoria. And dive in to the pub between arrivals and departures.

I agree 100% that British accents are few and far between. I hear everyone walking by as I’m quaffing my ale and having a tab.

Kano’s Ghirl is running at Navan in the 2:25. Paddy Power giving her at 20/1. The trainer thinks she will do well if the going stays good.

Zebelini in the 2:50 at Nottingham listed at 16/1 (she won her first race @ 60’s)

    Good luck to them both!

  11. Well now you’re just exaggerating. If Maradona and various others thought Du Wei was a class act then why should Celtic not try to sign him? We would be the only club in the world that signed players on the basis of where they came from rather than how good they were. We do also sign local players and run an academy but the view seems to be that those produced locally are not all of sufficient standard. I hope Calvin Miller becomes a superstar. But we need to cast our net far and wide too surely?

    ——————————————————————————————————————–

It’s a question of balance. I still think there’s a sufficient pool of talent within these shores to provide the base of our squad that could be supplemented by foreign imports. Every year we hear about the next up and coming generation of young superstars who win almost all the domestic youth tournaments they enter yet very few go onto fulfil their early potential in our first team. Granted some go on to have a professional career with other teams but the purpose of our youth system is first and foremost to provide a regular flow of players into the first team squad which it has patently failed to do particularly over the past ten years. As a direct consquence we end up with five loanees in our squad, four of who played in the match against Partizan Belgrade.

London is a fantastic place, although I often have to remind myself that there is a big world out there outside of this supposed centre of the universe!

Went to Bruges last week – what a beautiful and peaceful place.

  13. Richie.

I bet Zebelini at 20/1 this morning, didn’t see Kano’s girl.I’ll put on a double hoping they both get a place. l bet Zebelini, along with Maybole Lass, and added Curved in a three cross.

  19. The important thing about chips is to put the vinegar on before the salt.

That way the salt sticks to the chips.

If you do it the other way around the vinegar just washes the salt off the chips.

I can only hope this particular piece of insightful advice leads to an improvement in the team’s performance.

More seriously, I assume you use the bath to blanche the chips before a couple of freeze/fry cycles? Do you use salted water or stock in the bag?

  22. TBB in essence yes and the stock or any flavouring would be dependant on the style of eatery- fish the same and batter

I’ve been looking for Sutty remarks that are offensive and I can’t find any – in fact he comes across as reasonable compared to the majority on here. I just don’t see the problem.

I don’t like or buy the Record,(since thugs and thieves) but to castigate Sutty for doing a column for them is wrong. Celtic advertise and deal with them on a regular basis, cfc fans buy it on a regular basis.

Keano was an average Celtic player.

Keano was a poor Celtic managerial target.

    We still love Keano.
