Keane wanted/unwanted

759

Roy Keane’s “Celtic wanted me but they weren’t showing how much they wanted me” comment in his second autobiography about being courted to replace Neil Lennon as our manager in the summer is no doubt accurate on one level, but inaccurate on another.  Some within Celtic certainly wanted him, but I’m sure the reticence he picked up (and was shared by many of us on the blog at the time) was also very real.  Celtic wanted him, but their approach showed him how unconvinced they were.

Keane’s managerial CV is at best considered patchy and his reputation has sold more autobiographies of former team-mates and managers than the two volumes he has now published.  Few were convinced he was the right manager for the job, although I’ve no doubt Keane’s claim that Dermot Desmond wanted him, and told him “The job is yours” is accurate, whether anyone else at Celtic was in on the plan or not.

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me for Sunday’s Great Scottish Run 10k in aid of Celtic Foundation.  So far, £677 has been raised to help OUR foundation’s work with poverty, education, learning and equality.  The help and messages of support kept the legs moving.

    Guernica,

Is there any proof that Andrew Robertson is on 40k per week?

If so why are Hull paying above the average Epl salary for a left back who was playing for QoS two seasons ago. Tonev was reportedly on 8k with villa. Steven Flecher is on around 40k per week.

If Hull are paying 40k to Robertson their other players will be banging the managers door down asking for an improved contract. Their wages will be far below that on average.

Stevie May… May have been a better bet than Scepovic who seems to have left his body in Iberia.

Gauld could have been bought and loaned out for a season to a foreign club if he wasn’t ready for our first team though, having said that, is he worse than Tonev or Berget? Could he have been a long term replacement for Commons? An alternative this season on days when Kris tires?

We ignore Scottish talent at the expense of employing multiple foreign duds. Even at youth level. See Robertson, Snodgrass and McCarthy as examples.

We watch Dinamo Zagreb come to Celtic Park and zip the ball around and see that we are not technically as good as them. There were 3 Scottish players in our starting line up. The rest from far and wide. We blame the Scottish genes and mentality on our lack of technical ability but seem to be good at getting foreigners that are just as bad.

No one seems to know the answer to that but we keep doing the same things.

So is mine mate. I have nothing against Ronny, he didn’t appoint himself, others did, ignoring the pedigree, or lack there-off. I don’t blame the players’ either, they are trying so hard to focus on their waist girths and their headless chicken impersonations to knock in simple five yard sitters.

My wrath is directed mate but my will to get passionate about it anymore has all but evaporated.

  6. The reason there is even a debate around Keane getting offered the job or not is because the man who did get it isint doing too good at all at the moment.

Delia is out of his depth, Celtic is far too big a club for him, he was put there because we couldnt get anyone else, the man who’s job it was walked away because he was sick of the interfering from above.

The problem is purely Celtic’s in the making, particularly Lawell’s.

If Ronny goes Lawell has to follow him out of the door simple as that, he has to take responsibility for the failure, will he do it though, i doubt it very much.

I wonder why we never ever see a leader on this blog examining the implications that Lawell et al have failed big time, crowds dropping like a stone, top tier shut, etc, etc, it beggars belief actually, how they always seem to escape critique in the leading articles, Lord Haw Haw would be proud.

Now we have all Sunday home games being moved to a 1pm kick off without any consultation, my season card is actually worthless another game missed because of changed kick off times, i have missed 3 home games already this season due to work commitments, next season no point in me renewing if the club just decides to move kick off times because it can.

Wonder who the next patsy will be for the throne in the dugout?

Roy Keane lost the last of his credibility wearing shorts in the Aston Villa dug out at his age, and growing a big stupid grey beard, to look ‘trendy.’

It’s not any surprise we didn’t really want him enough, his ‘patchy ‘CV ended before he stopped performing as a player, about a year before he quit Man Utd.

He’s got a book to sell, so stick in a bit about how the Celtic job was his, and SMSM are all over it like a rash.

when 3 guys rang over to cover one DZ player going down the wing the other night….leaving their only other attacker completely free in the middle……did you not hold the players responsible?

Or when barely a single cross from either side managed to go over the 1st man on Sunday – not then either?

as in the old Air Crash Investigations this one is made up of many things – some little, some major – that conspire to cause the problem(s).

  11. the glorious balance sheet on

So this article suggests that Dermot Desmond took it on himself without any kind of consultation with the rest of the board to offer the job to Roy Keane.

I’d say that’s a clear indication of how things are at Celtic. We are just Dermot Desmond’s plaything.

We pay our money, we go to the games, even when kick off times are changed at short notice, but ultimately it’s Dermot Desmond’s toy. If he decides he wants Roy Keane simply because he’s Irish he’ll go out and try to get that and the rest of the board and the fans who pay their dues can get knotted.

Thankfully this time Roy Keane’s demands put paid to Dermot’s plan. Will we be so lucky next time?

Given the tone of this blog article I wonder if there is any tension between Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell at this moment in time. Seems like it to me.

It would be boycott [Snake Mountain]. Boycott [Sevco] merchandise. Flashmobs in entrance to Sports directs on Sauchiehall and Argyle st simultaneously, filmed for later press release. Blockade McGills depot when buses are due to start services in morning.

Roll on Tue and a productive meeting, steering a new dynamic to begin the end of this absolute living nightmare.”

    ——

“We need to have boots on the ground, causing disruption to the boards other businesses and interests. There’s [Huns] everywhere in Britain, what about organising a day of protest for [Huns] to meet at their local Sports Direct to spread the word of boycott? It would also give huge publicity to the aims of the protest. Setting up a second/sub [DoD] facebook page for specifically this undertaking would allow the organising of the actual protests, but would also allow for the [Huns] to then post their photos from their personal protest to allow people to actually see how many [Huns] were present and how wide ranging the protests actually were?….. It would also disrupt the Sports Direct trading as a side because if there’s a group of 30 [Huns] minimum outside the shop being noisy, some people would be a bit intimidated by this (sadly the time for being nice is long gone) and would then not got into the shop that day while we were still outside. Resulting in small losses countrywide for that day at least”

    ——

“If Mike Ashley is not acceptable for the support then I propose approaching Newcastle supporters groups to get their feedback and ask for their possible participation on boycotting Ashley owned businesses.

Indeed any fans who has a grievance with their owners could be approached and we agree to boycott the business interests of each others owners.”

    ——

“Although the numbers of 18 and 72 are symbolic, I think we should get away from the idea that these are the only minutes where anything should happen.” [How about 20 and 12 Sammy?]

    ——

“also think they should boycott all away matches but that’s for another reason entirely – the clubs that killed the sfl are sports criminals”

And for anyone who suggests Livingston v Sevco at the weekend was the first meeting of the clubs, that nonsense is swiftly blown out of the water:

“Is it not customery when a team plays another team for the first time to hand over pendants etc..”

I am personally a fan of Peter Lawwell and his senior management team. I think they run a good, succesful business and have managed the challenges and kept the business in good shape.

Roy Keane would have been a reasonable person to have involved with us. He would have played a good positive role in attracting players, particularly young players to the club. He would have made a good figurehead for the new “project” if he could have worked within the structure and contributed positively and been a somewhat humble, company figure. He would though, I expect, have been a reasonably short term involvement, either falling out with everyone or being offered another job in England. Celtic were obviously looking for a stop gap until RD could take the reins. I completely agree with succession planning, in fact we were sleeping on the job by not having an heir apparent to our previous managers.

However RK came with baggage and problem with people who dont need the job is they dont need the job. Also RK would not have put up with any interference from the boardroom and would have required funds to finance his tenure. Both of these pre requisites probably meant that the board did not want him involved without a cast iron contract covering all eventualities. Hence the stand off, hence it was never going to happen. Neither party really needed or wanted each other.

That left us with bringing in the number 2 as a number 1 and where we are now.

I dont think we are the club that can afford to waste a year, win nothing, and wait for new strategy and policies and personnel to come good. Wish we were but football aint that game anymore, you have to secure the short term, acheive the medium term and ensure you have the long term sorted.

This is a key month for us. If we do not achieve wins this month I am afraid we will be back to square one trying to sort the short term.

The moment one man said to another in private, ‘the job is yours’, Fergus McCanns intended version of Celtic, the one which people pumped millions of pounds of their own money in to in order for Celtic to be owned by those same people began to look rather foolish and naive.

  19. Hail Hail CQNers

Before I get myself depressed about the current goings-on at Paradise I would just like to remind everyone that it’s supporting Celtic which has infuriated, depressed, bemused, annoyed, excited, enthused, characterised and enriched all of us who genuinely don’t want nor expect walkovers week after week.

I began watching Celtic in the 50s which were unpredictably brilliant and dismal in equal measure with not enough trophies or medals in the cupboards of some terrific Celtic players.

The glories of the 60s were usurped by our cheating Sou’ side neighbours in the 90s

We can take a draw or defeat and applaud our opponents.

We can take downsizing of our club as reality and economics dictate.

We can even accept that Celtic do not share the same attraction to players or managers because of our proximity to the Monopoly Football game offered by “Best League in the World”

What I can’t take is the way the Board are currently standing by and allowing a bad situation to become worse by the week.

A Manager who more than three months into his tenure claims to have made progress yet for the life of me I cannot recognise any structure to his formations week after week.

He regularly makes personnel changes which confuse almost everyone watching.

I sympathise with the Manager’s inability to call upon a number of regular players through injury but remain unconvinced he would use them profitably at any rate.

There appears to be a serious disconnect between players and management and action must be taken to address this.

I was full of hope when I listened to RD on his appointment….I liked his philosophy. That hope began to evaporate in Warsaw and I’m sad to say the result on Sunday saw all hope vanish for me.

We could win some games and lose some games but unfortunately that will have very little to do with the manager. We are becoming dependent on the break of the ball, who is really on form, and who is having a nightmare. I know that can be the case with most teams, however my point really is, the obvious lack of a cohesive structure for the players to follow, results in mayhem. And we have witnessed that too often already this season.

    It’s time to act Celtic.

RD is not up to the job. Accept that and find a manager with the credentials worthy of representing a club like ours.

    I apologise for the rant.

I am not interested in your thoughts on what did/did not happen regards your non appointment but I hope your latest instalment sells well.

I am sure you are a changed character, as a footballer you achieved some goals as a manager you may well have found your limit.

One could only conclude that my club would have been used to kiss and tell just as your previous did.

  21. Another international break means a far few players away and the risk of further injuries. But also a chance for a few of those carrying knocks to get some recovery time.

In terms of our current injury list, we really need to get the right sided players fit again. Wakaso on the right doesn’t work and Tonev has shown little so far. We need Lustig or Matthews along with Forrest to balance up our attack.

Ref your comment about tension between PL and DD.

This is a distinct possibility, as after DD said “the jobs your” the next comment would be see PL for the fine tuning.

It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that he was met with a more restrictive welcome than anticipated, plus questions about No 2 and funding would then have made up his mind.

Make no mistake PL only became prominent when MON left,do you think he wants to return to the less glamorous role of doing his job properly, like investing prior to CL in order to gain entry thus generating funds………speculate to accumulate seems to be beyond his economic span.

Add to that his unfathomable support for the biggest drain on the finances which is the repetitively failing John Park, and you have a scenario which he would not want questioned by an outspoken maverick like Keane.

  31. Roy Keane would not have been blind to the treatment that Neil Lennon and his family were subjected to over the latter’s tenure as manager of Celtic FC. The assaults in the streets, the bombs and the bullets, the graffiti in the street, the double standards and treatment pedalled by the press, the double standards and treatment ladled by the SFA, the impartiality of our justice system and the Edinburgh juries, even our intrepid and honourable first minister stuck his oar in too.

The spit, the bile, the abuse, the chants, the headlines, the telephone calls, the Chinese whispers, the hate, the violence, the threats, the fears, the sleepless nights, the worry, the accusations, the smearing, the defamations, the sickness, the confusion and still more hate and hate and hate, hate in every shadow and behind and under it too. Hate from all quarters and more and don’t trust your back either.

A victim of Hate made manifest for no other reason other than the sheer pleasure of hate.

What sort of wage would one accept to justify subjecting his family to that choreographed and concentrated vile hatred? What conditions and guarantees would have to be in place before a thinking man would expose his family, and self, to such hostilities? And who’s to say the hate that would have showered down on Roy Keane and his family would not have been more concentrated and more disgusting than that which Neil Lennon and his family endured… all in the name of Celtic FC.

None of us will probably ever know.

Try and put yourself in their shoes for a while, on second thoughts… Naw, it’s not about them and their families, it is about me and my opinions. Who cares, let’s just slate the two bastards anyway, and let’s label them cowards and useless money grabbers and Irish carpetbaggers to boot. Well why not; it seems to be the accepted protocol of CQN’s finest these days.
