Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Well as things stand we have lost Johan, Gary I think, and Neil himself. With Danny sidelined we need a whole new coaching/management team. The most suitable would be Gordon Strachan and Mark McGhee, with maybe John Collins as a hands-on coach. We could offer to pay half of wee Gordy’s wages, and keep the Scotland show on the road. Won’t happen though, even if Stuart McColl seems to be able to be both an Assistant Coach and be the Motherwell manager. Not sure what Roy Keane would have brought to the party. Motivator? Well Neil could do that.

  5. I just wish Henke would sign ASAP. He has the CL experience with Utd, Barca and the Hoops as a player. Who left in the list has that kind of experience? From a managerical point of view, NL started off as a rookie and ended up bringing us to the last 16 and a famous win over the best team on the planet. Plus Henke would fill Paradise far more than the rest could, with all due respect…

Lennon hadn’t demonstrated his ability but I’m sad to say Henke has and as a manager/coach there’s no evidence to suggest he’s in the same league as a manager that he was as a player – that’s a polite way of saying he hasn’t done very well as a manager.

It’s a worry that DD is so offpage with Celtics strategy. Every man and his dug who believes in the strategy knew that RK was a poor fit even if he said yes.

DD is an astute man and it is inconceivable that he is unaware of his own strategy. He therefore must have thought there was a good chance of convincing him. Poor judgement.

Mind you box office bums on seats fits in with DDs overall strategy of bums on seats.

It’s a crying shame that the extent of our ambition as a club is the minimum target for the manager on the field.

Where exactly was Neil Lennons tactical nous proven beforehand even if he did already know of our ‘strategy’?

Did Tony Mowbray fit the bill as a technically gifted tactician(ahem) and was there any evidence he could ‘dovetail’ with this strategy?!

Why was Keane even on the shortlist if he represents such a huge risk?

So the board are clueless, and if he’d not been getting on a plane?

  17. You all realise we’ve just robbed the huns of their 2nd favourite pantomine villan after NL. The wee souls were working themselves into a frenzy an RK goes an rules himself out of the post. There is much angst and gnashing of teeth, who are they going to hate now? Shame.

    “Paul,

What concerns me is that the powers that be at CP deemed Keane a suitable candidate to open up talks with him.

His previous should have been enough for him to have failed the paper sift. ”

    I totally agree with this.

I also remain very concerned about what the board may have done to make NL decide to leave. I wonder if they regret it now.

I get the impression that they’re going to struggle to get a competent manager whose commitment to Celtic matches Neil Lennon’s and they’ll be very lucky if they can get anyone, even for a couple of seasons, who’ll want to take us into European competition without spending the sort of money that’s necessary to avoid regular thrashings.

“You can’t make bricks without straw,” and there aren’t any managers who can compete against the likes of Barcelona when players like Wanyama and Hooper are replaced by Boerrigter and Pukki.

all this waiting (unless there really is a candidate in left field somewhere) makes it look like the job is hard to fill and likely candidates may be put off .imo

The only thing I would say about speaking to RK, is that if he’d come in and said “I did a, b and c wrong and in the future I’ll do d, e and f having learned from my mistakes.” then perhaps a guy with a poor previous record is worth considering.

The difference with HL is that’s he’s currently managing and appears to be getting worse. 50% loss rate.

  25. I would definitely go with a Scottish coach. Someone who is media friendly, a cheeky chappy, someone who has worked their way up through the leagues, with a track record of winning trophies and developing talent along the way. Someone who is a clear advocate of fair play and is a tactical genius as proclaimed by the SMSM. By doing this we could also deprive a future rival of their prized asset. We need to get in there before the draw for the Ramsden’s Cup is made though; time is of the essence….
