Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

  1. I think Coyle, Mackay, Clarke and McNamara have their own merits and I would happy to back any of them.

I was one of the few relieved to see Keane say no.

Clarke is probably the best fit.

Unfair groundless comparison, for every pound in the EPL he’d get a Celtic penny.

This is where it’s all wrong and Celtic should be recruiting from further afield, and not seeing how somebody did, or didn’t do in the SKY league.

Forget the EPL tryers, and look to Europe where someone has been successful with a budget more aligned with Celtic’s.

Either that or recruit from within, and go again.

Auldheid, Steve Clarke works with the players he’s given according to others on the blog. That being he car it is how good Clarke would be with the players he is given at Celtic.

Going on the premise that Neil Lennon worked under similar circumstances? You can only hope Steve can make a purse from yer blades and boerigters.

In advance of the world beaters from Govan and Edinburgh taking their place in next seasons Scottish Championship I took a quick look at the squads of each club – unfortunately I don’t know where the confidence that Hearts will waltz it or Paul67’s assertion that Sevco will spend a couple of years bouncing around the lower tiers is coming from…

Despite haemorraghing cash they have the strongest squad at the moment and unless Hearts/Hibs can get some quality on board over the summer one or both will be spending at least 2 years in the 2nd tier.

    Hope I’m wrong…

  5. Afternoon all.

Just in-it’s lovely outside down here at the moment.

I’m rather concerned that Paul67 suggests there won’t an appointment made in the short term. Not too long before the squad return for training. Worrying, imo.

The biggest difference between Clarke’s first and second seasons at West Brom was Romelu Lukaku.

Any team with a guy who scores a goal every other game is going to be competitive.

Any team losing and failing to replace such a player is going to struggle.

I am sure it is more hope (that Sevco will get gubbed) than confidence. The Rangers are only rubbish compared to their predecessors. Compared to other Lower League Clubs, they are excellent. What else would one expect considering the millions they have spent.

I think Hearts have the advantage of being almost debt free and have a real feel good factor at the club. I expect them to practically sell out every game too.

I reckon Hearts are the favourites for that league at the minute. They get a few old heads in there who know the league and they get off to a flyer we will see the honest mistakes go through the roof next season.

Hibernian will really struggle. I can see them being a mid table club. They have no players.

Sevco will get players in I assume but they are a big scalp in that league and there are some clubs there who will have a go at them. I expect them to start slowly but probably scrape up into the top league through a play off against St Mirren or Ross County.

Hearts look favourites for that league to me.

Superdupercoisty is the main problem; but they ar enot going to get rid of him any time soon.

He should be fine at Celtic then. I am sure Leigh Griffiths will score more often than a goal every other game.

    Re commonwealth games programme

The whole premise of the programme was about replacing outdated buildings and ideas with, hopefully something better.

Included in this context were buildings unfit for habitation as well as attitudes unfit for the 21st century, to wit, bigoted parades marches whom the narrator mentioned, as I have on here, that Glasgow has more bigot marches than Belfast & Derry combined.

They made a deft connection between both in my book.

Placing Celtic in this context, who, hopefully, have more than a few years left, and in the immediate, provides host to Glasgow2014 would not have been helpful.

Celtic are part of the present & future. Bigots and the dwellings, neighbourhoods that fostered their behaviour are gone and not before time.

Sorry to be pedantic but HL has a 50% LOSS rate with his current team. His win rate is 25% with them and under 30% overall.

He started ok with Landskrona, but that happens with lots of new manager appointments. It didn’t go well after that.

I know what you’re saying about where he’s starting from but MON was successful from the outset with Wycombe 5th, 2nd, then back to back promotions and just missing Div 2 playoffs.

If you start at a wee team you still need to be successful to get a bigger job because of your playing reputation.

HL has yet to do anything to suggest he deserves a bigger job than those he’s had, let alone the Celtic job.

An article worthy of Pravda at its finest!

No doubt the leaking of the “talks” with SC was well timed as it came a couple of hours before RK let it be known that he wasn’t coming

I don’t think many will agree that RK would not be our manager today if he had wanted it!

I believed that Keane was our best shout for the following reasons

    1. He would only take the job if promised a realistic amount of money to spend

    2. He would have been a good leader of our club

    3. He would have instilled in our players the correct attitude towards playing for CFC on and off the park

Others will disagree -that is their right

However being realistic – DD will not back anyone else with more money

Most reputable coaches will take a look and politely decline after more “talks”

I expect SC to last a few days before he declines citing a reason such as his family

We will then work our way steadily ever downwards until we get OC or if even he knocks us back again -then Peter Houston -after all we’re already paying him a wage!

Hope to be proved wrong but I have no great expectation

To get the package on offer which is live games subscribers must reside outside the UK and Ireland.

I think that is something that really must be looked at.

I know there are some broadcasting rules involved and of course offering games live too close to CP would affect the crowd, especially if the price to view was cheaper. Hence the argument for equalising the price although even then you would be watching all league games rather than just home matches.

A post code listing would tell Celtic how many folk live within quarter of a mile from CP to Lands End and where to draw an exclusion zone.

Since TV is killing us in lots of ways we really must call for a level playing field there.

  25. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Roy Keane may or may not be a ‘great Irishman’; I doubt very much his few , very well paid, appearances at the fag end of his career make him a great Celt’; but he is a million miles from being a very good, never mind great, manager, which is after all what we are meant to be looking for.

  28. Any potential new manager must be wary of what the Celtic job will mean to him and his family. Even though they may not suffer the same extremes of abuse and intimidation, thoughts of what Neil Lennon (and others before him) had to go through must present a nagging worry.

I don’t know if Keane got offered the job, and I reckon the majority of people on here are in the same position. Even had he been appointed I would have given Keane my backing in the hope it would have worked out, but I don’t think he’ll ever make a manager to be honest.

Given the money he squandered at Sunderland on very average players, I don’t think his decision to rule himself out is a big loss to Celtic.
