Kenny Clark missing the point on human bias

253

Former referee, Kenny Clark, spoke to the BBC on the subject of bias in referees last night: “For anyone to suggest that a referee would work for 10 or 15 years to get to the top level of refereeing in Scotland and would then cheat the fans simply in order to give ‘his team’ an advantage is just nonsensical.”

Putting aside for one moment all recent issues in our game, everyone is prone to bias, conscious or otherwise.  It is part of the human condition. If referees insist they are immune, they are contributing to the problem.  Instead, they should be aware of the potential.  Former referees should encourage them to be vigilant.

Clark explains how much work goes into getting to the top in refereeing and that it would ridiculous to jeopardise a career to help your football team, but he is missing the point.  No wonder refereeing is in such a mess if they go around telling each other they are not affected by the human condition.  They are human, they make mistakes and are as subject to bias as any other group of professionals.

Clark was happy to cite the new SFA procedures as being sourced from English football, but omitted the add that English football addresses this very question of unintended bias by asking referees which team they support.

Oh, and I think I also must have missed the bit where Clark and the Strong Rangers Association mouthpiece were asked where in the rule book it says that a player shouldn’t be booked if he is “a bit silly”.

  2. After watching A.E.K Athens (twice)… and then getting final confirmation at Ibrox in our last game.

Our footballing department should have been identifying a decent right back, a long long time ago.

Go and secure a good right back Celtic, and be done with it. Get it done, and lets move on.

All other rumours for now are just a headache.

I remember him from being there from 1977 to 1982

the only difference professional referees will make is that they will be more practised and more professional in their cheating.

  5. Not bad.The Blog a lot drier than this morning.Wellies aff.

Mc Carthy. If we wanted him IF,a full medical will tell us if he is viable. If fit,a perfect replacement for BroonyNo loan deal though.Very good footballer, and playing for us would give him that edge.

With the talk of the Sunderland striker,I messaged an old Takem mate of mine in Nottingham.Still goes up to watch their games.Diehard.He says the boy is the best they have had in years, but they know he will be going somwhere.Too good for League 1.

  6. RUGGYMAN,

Could not agree more. Its up to the scouts, and to be fair to them, for once, they have come up with a couple of names.Dont know anything about them, but ,if stories are to be believed, their clubs playing silly buggers about price. That could just be media crap.SOT,reading the Italian press still thinking Castagna around £ 6 million.Thats affordable.Does he want to come?

  7. Stairheedrammy on

kenny Clark didnt miss the point, his task was to misdirect the public and the MSSM gratefully highlighted what he said as it fits with their campaign to protect the Rangers minded referees.

  8. Dont know why so many are getting riled up about the cheating scum who referee our game.I am sure, any of the older persuasion, like me,who first started going to the games with their Da,would have heard him and his mates, relatives, say exactly the same thing then. Its always been there, and as long as the Masonic SFA are in charge of our game,it always will be.

Ask yourself,Celtic v Huns, you are the Ref.Would you be fair and impartial? Not a hope in hell. The talk of declaring who you support, dont make me laugh. We would have 12 Chick Youngs in there. The difference in England is,its club rivalry, here its religion.Pure inbred bigotry.Hatred for all things Catholic.Never change.Incredible how well we have done considering, and no end to our success on the horizon.Savour every trophy, and think about how they feel like a dagger through their black hearts

    WITS and others,

The general consensus on Mc.Carthy in an Ireland shirt was that he never delivered on his potential.

I think Martin once said that he doesn’t impose himself on the game as he should.

To be honest, the little that I have seen of him, I don’t see why people get excited about him.

    Caveat.

That could be more to do with my lack of football knowledge than any shortcomings the boy has.

I would cut any football player some slack for having to play in Martin and Roy’s version of hoofball in the last few years . Truly brutal stuff where any semblance of playing seemed to be discouraged.

I don’t know if he’s the answer but a better calibre at least to the Dundees and Hibs of the world…

  12. Bayo was sought after and in the ,loanee space so was Weah. Guzman had offers and of course trials across the river…..

Burke to be honest is only here due to Anzani’s injury.

Ya ya we’ve passed on and those we seem to be in for are proving hard to shift due to the club not wanting to lose them / Lawell’s tight arsedness (delete as appropriate).

    Castagne ?

I’ve no idea . There’s been weeks of hype , speculation and fly a kite click baiting .

    Very little substantiation ——

The player did give a TV interview where he stated he wanted to play more and if that meant leaving then so be it

Atalanta ‘s Manager has publicly stated 3 times that he wants to keep Castagne .

An Atalanta suit publicly stated that Castagne could go if he wanted but only if the money matched Atalanta’s valuation of the player( .I’d speculate that they would want a lot more than 5 million euros )

Everything else is hot air . Italian transfers are often like English property sales- chains form – Yes -We’ll sell but only if Club X agree to sell player B to us for —

Either yesterday or the day before, there was a report (not sure how much substance it carries) and it stated that the player himself, had ruled out any prospect of moving to Scotland. He didn’t fancy it

    RUGGYMAN @ 2 28 .

No substance at all. There is no evidence that Castagne has said anything to anybody about Scotland , Wales,Turkey or Germany . He also hasn’t said anything about Lazio or Fiorentina . . All that stuff is made up guff — click bait style …

    Big Wavy’

Agreed. Ireland didn’t play a silky smooth game under Martin, but James would all too often disappear during games and that is not an encouraging trait for a midfield player.

I haven’t seen much of him when at Everton, so my view is highly qualified.

  19. In the mid70s we were down at Somerset Park. Johnnie Doyle ctossed the ball. It hit referee Bob Cuthill on the head. He was dazed and required treatment. On recovering, he red carded Johnnie! Unbelievabke. You can google this and see the clip. Evidence for Angel Gabriel !

when i frequently travelled I get to use the lounges.

Often I have seen a group of SFA Referees in transit somewhere. Usually to European matches or Internationals. I cant help but watch at their shear posturing, pompousness and absurdity. Body language experts would have a field day. They seriously have a common behavioural trait, an invincibility while wearing those SFA Blazers. The big I AMs and look at me’s.

Where’s Stuart Dougal when you need him ?

Couple of years ago I was thoroughly enjoying (!) myself in Sainsbury’s EK when my eye caught this guy posturing and preening around the shop, following his (I assume) wife. My better half caught me glaring at him and she took a gander then asked “Who is that prick?” Kid you not, Bada’s pal Stuart Feckin Dougal was doing exactly at St Stiv’s described, preening and posturing. He caught me looking at him then the scowl on my fizzog told him all he needed to know and off he trotted. A pwick of a man, years after hanging up his pea.
